Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a water-soluble resin containing no organic solvent and free from environmental pollution, by reacting a resin having terminal carboxyl groups with an epoxy resin, subjecting the reaction product to addition reaction with an amine, and neutralizing the product with an acid.
CONSTITUTION: (A) A polyester resin having terminal carboxyl groups and an acid value preferably of ≥10 is reacted with (B) an epoxy resin having two or more epoxy groups in the molecule [e.g. 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane, etc.] preferably at 120W180°C. The resultant resin is reacted with (C) an amine, e.g. diethylenetriamine, etc. and the product is neutralized with (D) an acid, e.g. acetic acid, etc. to give a water-soluble resin. Preferably the amount of the epoxy group of (B) is 1.5W3 equivalent, that of the active hydrogen of the amine (C) is 1W5 equivalent and that of the acid (D) is 1W5 equivalent on the basis of 1 equivalent of the carboxyl group of (A).
