For example, the luminance distribution for a certain horizontal line is as shown in the original image in FIG. In FIG. 4, a peak portion P1 is a light-side point defect or a line defect, and a peak portion P2 is a dark-side point defect or a line defect. It can be seen that the steady portion other than the peak portion is not the same luminance value but changes slowly.

As shown in (1), after the smoothed image is subtracted from the original image, a predetermined luminance value, in this example, "128" is added to the image so that the steady portion has a constant luminance value (hereinafter referred to as "smooth-difference"). And after subtracting the smoothed image from the original image including the line defect or point defect portions P1 and P2, and then adding a predetermined luminance value to generate a smoothed-difference image,
The surface defect portion Q does not appear in the obtained smoothed-difference image. Therefore, line defects and point defects are extracted based on the binarized image of the smoothed-difference image, and surface defects are extracted based on the binary image of the original image.
It is preferable to extract based on the binarized image.

Since the peak part P1 on the dark side has a peak part P2 on the light side outside the boundary part of the surface defect of the original image, there is a possibility that these may be erroneously extracted as point defects.

In order to mask the false point defect generated in the above with the surface defect mask image E, a logical sum (OR) of the binarized image C of the smoothed-difference image and the surface defect mask image E is calculated.
