36ファイバMACIIチップ 発明の背景
1.発明の分野 本発明は、光ファイバコネクタに関し、特に、光ファイバリボ
ンケーブルを接続するために使用するチップに関する。
2.従来技術の簡単な説明 1970年代の半ばにファイバオプティクスが出現
したことにより、単一のファイバコネクタを用いた24ファイバで毎秒45メガ
ビットのデータ伝達速度に達した。20年後、32ファイバパラレルアレイシス
テムは、同軸線の能力および長さを越えるより早い伝送速度を必要するコンピュ
ータ技術用に、16Gb/sで伝送することができる。複数のアレイテクノロジ
ーおよびコンソーシアムが、パラレルアレイ技術を含むものに発展した。これに
は、AT&T社、IBM社、Honeywell社、および、Martin M
arietta社からなるオプトエレクトロニックコンソーシアム(OETC)
が含まれる。
このOETCグループは、デバイスおよび光ファイバ用の新しいパッケージン
グ技術を導入することにより、32チャンネルのオプティカルリンクを開発した
。トランスミッタおよびレシーバモジュールは、光ファイバケーブルアセンブリ
に直接結合することにより、ピグテールを排除した構造に形成されている。ファ
イバ間のピッチを密に維持することにより、デバイス、コネクタおよびケーブル
内のファイバ密度が増大している。18ファイバ用テストユニットが、新しい3
2ファイバケーブルのために開発された。標準コネクタシェル内の高密度MAC
IIは、従来のコネクタ構造との互換性を維持する。
従来のMACII構造は、18および32ファイバチップを備える。18ファ
イバチップは、ファイバを250ミクロンの中心間距離で配置し、これは、ファ
イバの構造がMACIIハードウェアの単一ディメンションにおけるより大きな
密度を制限するからである。リボン状に配置されたファイバ(62.5/125
/250,コア/クラッド/バッファのミクロン単位の寸法)が単一の列内で側
方に並置させて配置される。18本のファイバが単一の層内でリボン状にされる
と、18X1,バッファ対バッファで、ファイバの中心間隔は250ミクロンの
距離が必要であり、これはバッファが直線状のレイアウトを制御するからである
。組立てに際し、バッファ材料は、ファイバ端部から9.5ミリメートル除去さ
れ、125ミクロンのクラッドを露出する。18ファイバMACIIチップは、
125ミクロン径を収容するが、250バッファはファイバを250ミクロンの
間隔に離隔する。OETCでは、MACIIの標準部品は32ファイバチップ構
造で用いられる。32ファイバチップでは、62.5/125/135ファイバ
が140ミクロンの中心間隔で配置され、密度を増大している。なお、以下の第
36図から第38a図に関連して開示される好ましい溝寸法は、第35a図に示
すファイバ用であり、これらの寸法は、第38b図に示す、より大きなファイバ
用に調整される。
発明の概要
本発明のコネクタでは、中央ブロックが上側および下側チップから形成され、
これらのチップのそれぞれは、複数の長手方向溝を有し、これらの溝は他方のチ
ップと共に、ブロック内に複数のファイバ収容孔を形成する。そして、上側チッ
プが下側チップ上に重ねられ、接着剤などにより、これに結合される。ファイバ
リボンケーブルから絶縁材が除去され、下側チップの1つ置きのV字状溝内に挿
入される。第2の光ファイバリボンケーブルが第1ケーブル上に重ねられ、残り
のv字状溝内に挿入される。この構造により、例えば16から36ファイバであ
るのが好ましく、更に36ファイバより多く収容されるのが好ましい、極めて多
くのファイバが特定の対の隣接したチップ内に収容される。

好ましい実施形態の詳細な説明
第1図を参照すると、光データ通信システムに含まれる基本的な部材は、トラ
スミッタ10と、コネクタ14,16を有する光ケーブル12と、レシーバ18
とを備える。トランスミッタは電気信号を光信号に変換し、この信号が光ケーブ
ルを通ってレシーバに伝達される。レシーバは、光信号を電気信号に変換する。
このシステム中の光コネクタは、トランスミッタとレシーバとの間における装備
(installation)および変更を容易にする。
トランスミッタは、電気信号をレーザダイオードを通して光信号に変換する。
通常の構造は、基板に装着するカン内にレーザ装置を収容する。基板密度は、レ
ーザ量を制限する。第2図を参照すると、垂直孔面発光レーザ(vertical cavity
surface emitting laser,(VCSEL)が示されており、このレーザ装置は各レーザ
ダイオードを、単一モジュラパッケージ保存用基板スペース内に収容する。この
装置は、発光ダイオード(LED)20と、符号22で概略的に示すファイバア
レイブロックとを備える。このファイバアレイブロックは、概略的に符号24で
示す光ファイバと、符号26で概略的に示すマルチファイバアレイコネクタ(M
ACII)チップとを備える。OETCのトランスミッタモジュールは、32の
垂直孔面発光レーザを単一のモジュール内に収容する。各レーザは、ファイバア
レイブロック内に、垂直に光を放出する。ファイバアレイブロックの後部27は
、45°の角度に研磨され、金メッキされ、VCSELから放射された光をファ
イバ内に反射する。
レシーバは、光信号を電気信号に変換する。通常の構造は、基板に装着するカ
ン内にレシーバをパッケージングする。基板密度は、レシーバモジュールの容量
(capacity)を制限する。OETCグループは、32チャンネルデテクタ/レシ
ーバアレイ、31データチャンネル、および、1のクロックチャンネルを設計し
た。レシーバアレイ構造は、ファイバアレイブロックに金メッキされた45°の
後部角度を設け、ファイバを出る光を、140ミクロンセンタの各デテクタ内に
反射する元の構造に類似している。ファイバリンクは、光ケーブルアセンブリを
備え、光コネクタが2つのケーブル端部で終端し、トランスミッタをレシーバに
連結する。単一ファイバあるいはマルチファイバでリンクを形成することも可能
である。
第3図を参照すると、光ファイバは、単一ユニットを形成する3つの主要な部
材からなる。コア28として知られている内側部材は、クラッディング30と称
される第2層で囲まれている。これらのコアおよびクラッディングの材料は、光
信号を伝達する媒体を形成する。ファイバは、そのサイズ、形式およびモード容
量(mode capacity)によって分類される。ファイバのサイズは、コアおよびク
ラッディングの径をミクロン単位で表示する2つの数を含む。62.5/125
ファイバは、125ミクロン径のクラッディング層で囲まれた62.5ミクロン
径のコアを表わす。第3の数は、バッファとして知られているクラッディングを
覆う保護層をミクロン単位で表わす。コア、クラッディングおよびバッファ径は
、必要とされるパーフォーマンスにしたがってサイズおよび構造が変化する。以
下のテーブル1は、最も一般的なサイズを示す。

第4図および第5図を参照すると、ファイバが、コア28およびクラッディン
グ30と共に示してあるが、バッファは示してない。光は、スネルの法則すなわ
ち屈折率のより大きい方に屈折するという法則にしたがって、第4図に示すよう
に、ファイバ内でコアとクラッディングのバリア層との間を反射する。ファイバ
内では、コアの屈折率がクラッディングの屈折率よりも高いため、第4図に示す
ように、光がファイバのコア内で屈折する。特に第5図を参照すると、内部反射
を維持するために、光は臨界角度Aでファイバコア内に入ることが必要であり、
そうでなければ光りはコア内に反射しない。
第6図を参照すると、ファイバアレイは、全体を符号34で示すリボンを備え
、このリボンでは、複数のファイバ36,38,40が単一の列に整列されてい
る。
ファイバの径がファイバ中心間距離(center to center offset)を表わすため
、ファイバ幅は、各ファイバの径を総計したものとなる。ファイバリボンも、全
体を符号42で示す被覆を有し、この被覆は第1リボンバッフア44と第2リボ
ンバッファ46とを備える。この被覆は、ファイバリボン構造を保護しかつ維持
する。光ファイバに作用する引張り荷重は、ファイバに好ましくない動作特性を
作用させる。強化部材はリボンの被覆を囲み、ケーブルに導入された外部引張り
荷重を解除する。
第7図を参照すると、全体を符号48で示す他のリボンが、その外側ジャケッ
ト50と共に示してある。ファイバリボン34と同様に、ファイバリボンケーブ
ル48は、中央に配置された複数のファイバ52と、第1リボンバッファ54と
、ケーブルバッファ56とを備える。ファイバリボンケーブル48も、強化部材
58を備え、この強化部材は、DuPont社から市販されている「KEVLA
R」であるのが好ましく、ジャケットとケーブルバッファとの間に介挿される。
外側ジャケットは、ファイバリボンと強化部材とを周囲環境から保護する。ジャ
ケット材料は、用途にしたがって変化するが、可撓性樹脂が最も一般的な材料で
ある。樹脂の化学的作用は、レーザ及び内部(plenum)の詳細および必要に合わ
せて変化する。
何キロメートルのリボンを必要とする長距離用の用途では、リボンが直列に永
久的に接続(splice)され、リボンの全長における減衰を最小とする。リボンお
よびスプライスは、中断することなく、結合状態を維持する。光コネクタは、設
置者がいつでもリボン設備を交換あるいは変更可能な永久接続に対して代るべき
手段を提供する。このような光ファイバコネクタは、連結損失を最小としつつ、
2つのファイバを結合するように形成されている。内因性および外因性損失は、
このような連結損失の2つの主たる損失形式である。内因性損失は光ファイバの
形状寸法の異常性から生じ、これには、開口率(受光角)、および、コアおよび
クラッディングの径の不整合、同心性、楕円率が含まれる。第8図を参照すると
、開口率不整合からの損失が図示されており、ここでは、コア62とクラッディ
ング64とを有する第1ファイバ60を、コア68とクラッディング70とを有
する第2ファイバ66に整合させようとしたものである。この配置では、ファイ
バ
60とファイバ66との間の受光角b,cが整合してないことが認められる。第
9図を参照すると、ファイバ72は大径のコア74およびクラッディング76を
有する。ファイバ78は、小径のコア80および外側のクラッディング88を有
する。このコア径の不整合により、内因性損失が生じる。第10図を参照すると
、ファイバ84はコア86と外側クラッディング88とを有する。整合したファ
イバ90は、コア86と同じ径のコア92を有する。しかし、ファイバ90の外
側クラッディング94は、ファイバ84のクラッディング88よりも大きな径を
有し、したがって、この場合も内因性損失を生じる。第11図を参照すると、楕
円形コア98とクラッディング100とを有するファイバ96が示されている。
このコアの楕円率も、内因性損失を生じさせる。第12図を参照すると、円形断
面のコア104を有するが、しかし、クラッディング106が楕円形であるファ
イバ102に内因性損失が生じる状況が示されている。第13図を参照すると、
更に他の内因性損失状況が記載されており、この場合、ファイバ108は円形断
面のコア110と円形状断面のクラッディング112とを有するが、しかし、こ
こでは、コアとクラッディングとは、同心状でない。第14図を参照すると、外
因性損失を生じる1の状況が示してあり、ここでは、コア116とクラッディン
グ118とを有するファイバ114が、ファイバ120と側方にずれており、こ
のファイバ120は、コア122とクラッディング124とを有し、ファイバ1
14から側方にオフセットしている。特に、ファイバ114の中心線126が、
ファイバ120の中心線128から、距離xだけずれていることが明らかである
。第15図を参照すると、コア131とクラッディング132とを有するファイ
バ130が、このファイバ130と等しいコアおよびクラッディングを有するフ
ァイバ133と整合している。これらのファイバ130,133の端部は、距離
y離隔しており、これにより、外因性損失が生じる。第16図を参照すると、コ
ア136およびクラッディング138を有するファイバ134が、このファイバ
134に対応するコアおよびクラッディングを有するケーブル138から角度z
ずれた状況でも、外因性損失が生じる。第17図を参照すると、他の外因性損失
のファクタの例が示してあり、ここでは、ファイバ142は、粗い面144を有
する。コネクタ設計段階にあると考えられる外因性損失ファクタは、側方のずれ
、
端部の分離、角度の不整合、および、表面仕上げを含む。端部の分離および表面
仕上げは、ケーブルアセンブリの製造における研磨工程にしたがう。
第18図を参照すると、SCファイバ光コネクタが記載されている。このコネ
クタは、カップリング装置146と、前部外側シェル148と、後部外側シェル
150と、ブーツ152とを有する。この装置も、ばね154と、リング155
と、クランプリング156とを有する。通常と同様、このコネクタも、フェルー
ルと、インサートと、第1,第2整合装置と、ストレインリリーフ装置とを備え
る(全て図示してない)。単一ターミナル内では、フェルールは、光ファイバを
固定しかつ収容する。インサートは、中央部材として作用し、カップリング機構
を保持しかつ概略的な整合を維持しつつ、フェルールがコネクタ内で浮動するの
を可能とする。このインサートは、通常、フェルールに力を作用させるばねを包
含する。カップリング機構は、コネクタおよびケーブルアセンブリを、隣接する
光コネクタあるいはアダプタ等に取付ける。ストレインリリーフは、フェルール
の浮動性を阻害することなく、ケーブルの強化部材をコネクタコネクタアセンブ
リに固定する。ブーツは、コネクタのケーブル出口ポイントで、ケーブルの最小
湾曲半径を維持する。
第19図を参照すると、好ましいマルチアレイコネクタ(MACII)が全体を符
号157で示してあり、単一ファイバコネクタ構造を反映するが、しかし、この
アレイコネクタは、符号158で示すように複数のファイバをブロック159内
で同時に整合させる。MACIIブロックは、一対のシリコン製チップ160,
162からなり、符号164で示すようなv字状溝が密な公差でエッチング形成
されている。このチップは、v字状溝内のファイバをサンドイッチ状に挟み、エ
ポキシ樹脂で結合あるいは接着されている。整合ピン(図示しない)が、より深
い端部溝166,168内に固定され、チップとチップ、および、ファイバとフ
ァイバとを整合する。このチップは、120から178ミクロンの範囲のファイ
バ系を収容可能であり、これは、リボンのファイバ系がチップ間隔を制御するた
めである。例えばテーブル1に示すように、全てのファイバは、組立て工程の一
部として、バッファを剥離することが必要である。18ファイバMACIIチッ
プは、ファイバを250ミクロンの中心間隔で配置し、ファイババッファの径は
、
ファイバ間の間隔を制限する。
第20図は、全体を符号170で示すMACIIコネクタを示し、このコネク
タは、OETCチップ172,174からなる点を除いて、第19図に示すコネ
クタとほぼ同様である。OETCチップは、ファイバを140ミクロンの中心線
間隔で配置し、32本のファイバを標準のMACIIエンベロープ内に嵌合する
。剥離してはならないポリイミドを被覆されたファイバが用いられる。このファ
イバの被覆は、「PYROCOAT」の商品名でスペクトラン社(Spectr
an)から市販されている。光ケーブル上へのコネクタの装着は、簡単である。
オペレータは、ナイフあるいは剥離用ツールを用いて、ケーブルの外側ジャケッ
トを所定の寸法まで除去し、強化部材およびバッファ付きのファイバを露出する
。強化部材は、のこ歯状のはさみで所要の寸法に切断される。バッファ材料は、
HOT JACKET STRIPPER(製品番号HJS−01)の商品名でフ
ジクラ社(Fujikura)から市販されているファイバストリッパを用いて
、公差内で剥離される。なお、同等な化学的ストリッピング法を用いることも可
能である。裸のファイバは、エポキシ樹脂を汚染する恐れのある不純物をアルコ
ールで除去し、清浄にする。エポキシ樹脂がシリンジでフェルール内に挿入され
る。MACIIでは、エポキシ樹脂は、ファイバ挿入後に追加される。ばね、イ
ンサートおよびカップリング装置は、エポキシ樹脂のない状態に維持される。フ
ァイバはフェルール内で回転される。フェルールの内径を通してその通路が判明
する。リボンがMACIIのv字状溝内に挿入される。バッファ材料は、フェル
ールあるいはブロック後部の底部に達し、一方、ファイバは前端部から突出する
。エポキシ樹脂のドーム状部が、端面突出部でベースファイバを囲みかつ支持す
る。このドーム状部は、初期研磨(initial grinding and polishing)工程の際
にファイバを支える。オペレータは、ストレインリリーフにより、コネクタにケ
ーブルを固定する。ストレインリリーフの形式は変化するが、コネクタの分野で
は、けん縮およびエポキシ樹脂が最も用いられている。エポキシ樹脂が硬化した
後、オペレータはファイバを研磨し、鏡面仕上げとする。この研磨工程は、エポ
キシ樹脂のドーム状部を粗く研磨して除去し、この後、微細研磨により、グラス
ファイバの引掻ききずを最小にする工程を備える。最終工程は、端面を洗浄し、
研磨工
程による汚染物を除去する。第21図は、終端された光コネクタを示し、ここで
は、ファイバ176が、コネクタ178の前部外側シェル178とカップリング
装置180とエポキシ樹脂182とに結合されている。
マルチモードケーブルアセンブリは、挿入損失テストを必要とし、単一モード
ケーブルは、挿入損失および後方反射(backreflection)テストを必要とする。
連結部から反射する光は、単一モードに使用されるレーザ信号と干渉する。標準
規格は、dBの単位で測定した許容可能な後方反射の種々のレベルを特定してい
る。第22図を参照すると、それぞれがコア188とクラッディング190とを
有しかつ信号192を搬送する整合したファイバ184,186が記載されてい
る。信号の後方反射成分は、鎖線194の光線で示してある。
実施規格は、装着前に光リンクのテストを規定する。これは、光リンクによる
閉ループのテスト中における損失と、リンクなしのループのテスト中における損
失とを比較することを必要とする。単一モードの用途における最も一般的なレー
ザ装置(laser applications)は、後方反射テストが必要である。信号がファイ
バ端部に達したときに、信号の一部がファイバ内に後方に向けて反射する可能性
がある。光産業界では、EIA(Electronic Industry Association)の光ファ
イバテスト手順(FOTP‘s)を便宜的に用いている。後方反射テストは、便
宜的に、FOTP−107、光ファイバ用後方反射測定(Backreflection Measu
rements)にしたがって行われる。FOTP−171は、以下のテーブル2に記
載したような主リンク構造を対象とした4つの方法を含む。方法Aは、連続リン
クをまねるために(mimic)、ユーザが個別的にシリーズ(series)をテストする
ことを可能とする。方法Aは、テストを10のトータルリンクに制限する。ユー
ザは、基準リンクでベースラインを設定し、ケーブル1がこのシリーズ内に含ま
れる。基準とケーブル1との間の差が、ケーブル1の損失を定める。ケーブル2
がケーブル1に追加され、ケーブル2の測定値と基準リンクを含むケーブル1と
の間の差が、ケーブル2の損失を定める。方法Aを第23図に概略的に示す。第
24図を参照すると、方法Bのテスト構造(test design)は、同様な接続部の
損失を測定する。ユーザは、テスト中に、ケーブル有りおよびケーブル無しの状
態でループに送出されたパワーを比較する。オペレータは、テスト中のケーブ
ルを逆にし、反対方向のパーフォーマンスを測定する。前方および後方の平均が
、ケーブルの減衰を生じる。ケーブルは、同様なコネクタ端部で容易に逆転する
。第25図を参照すると、方法Cは、コネクタとは異なり、2つのコネクタの形
式で2つの基準を形成する。テストされるケーブルは、基準Aからの入力を受け
るが、しかし、この出力信号は、コネクタBに至る。逆転されると、コネクタB
が入力側で、コネクタAがパワーを受ける。テスト配置は、ケーブルを両方向に
テスト可能とする。第26図を参照すると、方法Dの手順は、反対側端部をデテ
クタヘッド内に直接的に配置することにより、単一ケーブル上に集中させる。テ
ストされるケーブルは、基準およびデテクタユニット間に配置される。基準と、
テスト下のケーブル付き基準との間のパワーの差が、ケーブルの損失を生じる。
この手順により、ユーザは、ピグテールと、単一コネクタ端部を有するケーブル
と、トラブルシュート問題ケーブルとをテストすることができる。両端にコネク
タを有する問題リンクは、問題コネクタ内でより大きな損失を有する。方法Bあ
るいは方法Cが、ケーブル端部間の損偏差(loss deviation)を検出できないと
きは、方法Dが、コネクタを個々にテストすることにより、損偏差を拡大する。

FOTP−107は、光学的端面の後方反射特性を測定するための手順を詳細
に規定する。この手順は、オプティカルカップラ、光ソースおよびパワーメータ
を用いることを必要とする。このカップラは、オペレータに反射光の出力レベル
を比較する手段を提供するものであるが、しかし、光学産業界は、手動によるゼ
ロ点調整方法に代え、信頼できる後方反射計(backreflection meter)を制作す
る。後方反射計は、測定を容易かつ迅速にし、追加計算を不要とする。後方反射
計は、パワーメータモジュールに設けられたときに、パワーメータとして作用す
ることができる。第22図は、光信号の端面における後方反射を概略的に示す。
産業基準は、ユーザの必要に合致させるために、種々のレベルの後方反射につ
いて概略を規定する。テーブル3は、後方反射パーフォーマンスの種々のレベル
の概略である。合衆国の基準ではないが、後方反射損失を最低とする傾斜研磨端
面を表示するために、緑(green)が確保されている。平坦研磨技術は、ガラス
面上の研磨から形成される。研磨面の下側のゴムパッドは、端面の物理的接触(
physical contct; PC)を可能とする端面に、丸み(radius)を形成する。超
物理的接触(SPC)および極超物理的接触(UPC)の形式は、研磨工程中に
おける高度のレベルの端面製法(endface preparation)である。アングル物理
的接触(angle physical contct; APC)は、コネクタのキー位置に配置され
る相手方コネクタに、端面角度を導入する。この角度は製造業者および地域内(
manufacturers and countries)における単一ファイバでは8°から12°、M
ACIIでは5.5°に変化する。

アレイコネクタアセンブリは、単一ファイバリンクと同様に、挿入損失(F〇
TP−171)および後方反射テスト手順(FOTP−107)を用いる。テス
ト技術は、アレイの個々のファイバを個別的に、および、同時にテストすること
を可能とする。両方法は、第28図に概略的に示すMACIIアセンブリ内に分
岐する個々のコネクタを有する基準ストラップを必要とする。マニュアルの方法
は、単一の光ソースと、パワーメータと、2つのMACII基準ストラップとを
必要とする。第29図には、パワーメータに連結された第2コネクタ内に分岐す
るMACIIコネクタ対となる(merging)各ファイバ(individual)内の光(light
launches)が概略的に示してあり、この第29図は、単一ソースとパワーメータ
