Abstract

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain white cerium oxide powder effective in shielding UV by firing cerium oxide powder at a specified temp. in an oxidizing atmosphere. SOLUTION: A base such as an ammonia soln. is added to an aq. cerium salt sold. to neutralize the cerium salt soln. and to deposit a precipitate. This precipitate is crystallized by heating in an autoclave and the resultant intermediate product is dehydrated if necessary and is washed and dried to form yellowish cerium oxide powder. This powder is fired at >=700 deg.C, preferably >=800 deg.C, especially preferably >=1,000 deg.C for 2-3hr in an oxidizing atmosphere to obtain the objective white cerium oxide powder having <=2.0μm average particle diameter (Stakes diameter) and a yellow index (YI) of <=20 and suitable for use as a material added to water and oil paints and cosmetics for skin care, make-up, etc.

しかし、酸化セリウムを塗料や化粧品に配合して使用す
る場合は、紫外線の遮蔽という目的は達しても、このよ
うな従来の黄色の酸化セリウム粉末を配合する場合は次
のような問題点がある。

応じて脱水、洗浄、乾燥する方法により得られる酸化セ
リウム粉末、さらに、セリウムアルコキシドのアルコー
ル溶液を加水分解する方法により得られる酸化セリウム
粉末などを用いることができる。上述した原料粉末は黄
色味がかっており、上述のようにさらに特定条件で焼成
する事により、目的とする白色の酸化セリウム粉末が得
られる。
