Adhesive films generally comprise a support having a pressure sensitive adhesive coating on one surface thereof and a release coating on the other surface. The purpose of the release coating is to prevent the film from sticking too strongly to itself when wound onto a roll so that it can be easily unwound from the roll. Without a release coating, unwinding the film from the roll can be difficult or impossible, and during unwinding the adhesive tends to migrate from one surface of the film to the other. Finally, unwinding methods in prior art films can be very noisy. US Pat. No. 4,673,611 discloses an adhesive tape which can be taken off from a roll, which consists of a coextruded and biaxially oriented multilayer polypropylene support film and an adhesive layer. The support consists of at least two polypropylene layers of different composition, the second layer of the support facing away from the adhesive coating being 3/3 of the total thickness of the adhesive tape. It has a thickness of less than 1 and contains an anti-adhesion material (eg, 0.2 wt% to about 3.0 wt% polydiorganosiloxane). This structure has the advantage that no release coating is required on the support. However, it is necessary to incorporate additives into the support. In addition, the additive migrates to the adhesive when the film is wound onto a roll and this causes a loss of tack in the adhesive. According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a thermoplastic polymer film structure comprising a support coated on a first surface with a pressure sensitive adhesive, the second side of the support opposite the first surface. A thermoplastic polymer structure as described above is provided, the surface of which comprises high density polyethylene (HDPE). The presence of HDPE in the surface opposite the adhesive gives excellent surface release properties, and again without any significant migration of the adhesive on the second surface of the support after the film has been wound onto a roll. It can be easily unrolled. Furthermore, it was found to be less noisy during unwinding than with prior art pressure sensitive tapes. The support can comprise a single layer or multiple layers. HDPE is desirably 0.930-0.965, preferably 0.945-0. It should have a density of 955, most preferably 0.950. In a first preferred embodiment, the support comprises a single layer of HDPE. Advantageously, the second surface of the support has not been subjected to any form of surface treatment. However, it is preferred that the first surface of the support has undergone a surface treatment. In the first aspect, the support preferably comprises 50-100 wt% HDPE, more preferably 80-100 wt% HDPE. When the support comprises less than 100% by weight HDPE, it preferably comprises a blend of HDPE and at least one other olefin polymer. Other olefin polymers are, for example, low density polyethylene such as linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE); low density (high pressure) polyethylene (LDPE); medium density polyethylene (MDPE); or propylene copolymers or terpolymers. be able to. The copolymer or terpolymer of propylene is suitably a random or block terpolymer of ethylene and propylene; or a random or block copolymer of butylene and propylene; or a random or block terpolymer of ethylene, propylene and butene-1. Preferred copolymers of ethylene and propylene contain 1 to 30% by weight, preferably 2 to 7% by weight and more preferably 3 to 5% by weight ethylene. This preferred copolymer also has a melt flow rate at 230 ° C. of 2 to 15, more preferably 3 to 8; a crystalline melting point of 125 to 150 ° C .; a number average molecular weight of 25,000 to 100,000; and a density of 0.89 to 0.90. Have. A preferred copolymer of butylene and propylene contains up to 30% by weight of butylene. Preferred terpolymers of propylene are 1-10, preferably 2-6 wt% ethylene, 80-97, preferably 88-95 wt% propylene, and 1-20, preferably 2-15 wt% butene-1. including. Preferably, the support comprises antiblocking agents, or other additives. Although such additives are not essential (HDPE has very good release properties without them), certain additives can produce further improvements in release properties and other desirable properties. Particularly good results have been obtained with silicone oils, EBS (ethylene bis stearamide), GMS (glycero monostearate) and montan wax. The preferred silicone oil is polydialkyl-siloxane. When silicone oil is used, there is some migration of silicone oil to the surface of the adhesive after the film has been wound onto a roll. However, despite this migration, good adhesion with pressure sensitive adhesive coated surfaces was clearly shown. In a second preferred embodiment, the support has 3 layers in a structure comprising a core layer sandwiched by 2 other layers. The first of the other layers comprises an adhesive coating on its outer surface. The second of the other layers comprises HDPE; the outer surface of the second layer faces away from the adhesive coating. Advantageously, the outer surface of the second layer has not been subjected to any form of surface treatment. However, it is preferred that the outer surface of the first layer be surface treated prior to application of the adhesive. In the second aspect, the second layer preferably comprises 50-100 wt% HDPE, more preferably 80-100 wt% HDPE. When the second layer comprises less than 100% by weight HDPE, it preferably comprises a blend of HDPE and at least one other olefin polymer. The other olefin polymer is a low density polyethylene such as linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE); low density (high pressure) polyethylene (LDPE): medium density polyethylene (MDPE); or a copolymer or terpolymer of propylene. You can The propylene copolymer or terpolymer is suitably a random or block copolymer of ethylene and propylene, or a random or block copolymer of butylene and propylene; or a random or block terpolymer of ethylene, propylene and butene-1. Preferred copolymers of ethylene and propylene contain 1 to 30% by weight, preferably 2 to 7% by weight and more preferably 3 to 5% by weight ethylene. Further, this preferred copolymer has a melt flow rate at 230 ° C. of 2 to 15, more preferably 3 to 8; a crystalline melting point of 125 to 150 ° C .; a number average molecular weight of 25,000 to 100,000; and a density of 0.89 to 0.90. Have. A preferred copolymer of butylene and propylene contains up to 30% by weight of butylene. Preferred terpolymers of propylene are 1-10, preferably 2-6 wt% ethylene, 80-97, preferably 88-95 wt% propylene, and 1-20, preferably 2-15 wt% butene-1. including. Preferably, the second layer comprises an antiblocking agent, or other additive. As mentioned above, such additives are not essential. Particularly good results have been obtained with silicone oils, EBS and montan wax. The preferred silicone oil is polydialkylsiloxane. When silicone oil is used, there is some migration of the silicone oil to the adhesive surface after the film has been wound on rolls. However, despite this migration, good adhesion with pressure sensitive adhesive coated surfaces was clearly shown. Preferably, the core layer comprises expanded olefin polymer. The core layer desirably comprises a polymer of propylene, suitably a homopolymer polypropylene and preferably isotactic polypropylene. The core layer comprises voids. More particularly, the core layer can be cavitated, for example as disclosed in EP-A-00 83495. The preferred cavitating agent is polybutylene terephthalate, especially as spherical particles. The first layer comprises any olefin polymer useful in the manufacture of adhesive liners, or mixtures thereof, and is suitably a polymer of propylene, such as polypropylene. The first layer may include any of the materials described above for the second layer. If desired, the first layer can be the same material as the second layer. In a particularly advantageous configuration, the first layer comprises HDPE, the outer surface of which has been treated to modify its surface properties. The surface treatments discussed above may be achieved, for example, by exposing the surface to corona discharge, flames or oxidizing chemicals. Flame treatment is preferred. Preferably, the surface is treated to a surface activity of at least 36 dyne / cm (36 mN / m), more preferably at least 40 dyne / cm (40 mN / m). In the second embodiment, the core layer is coextruded or extrusion coated with the first and second layers, and then the entire support is desirably biaxially oriented. The polymer, in the molten state, can be extruded from a conventional extruder through a flat sheet die and the melt streams combined in an adapter before being extruded from the die. After leaving the die orifice, the thermoplastic polymer film structure is cooled, and the quenched sheet is then preferably reheated and oriented by stretching (eg, at about 253 ° F (123 ° C)). 4 to 6 times in the direction, and then 8 to 10 times in the lateral direction at about 310 ° F (154 ° C). According to a second aspect of the invention, (a) a support coated on its first surface with a pressure sensitive adhesive, wherein said surface comprises HDPE and said surface prior to application of said adhesive. And (b) a thermoplastic polymer film comprising an anti-adhesive substance incorporated into or coated on the second surface of the support opposite the adhesive coating. It This aspect of the invention is based on the unexpected discovery that the adhesive provided on the surface treated HDPE has significantly better adhesive properties. These adhesive properties are most pronounced when the adhesive is a hot melt adhesive. However, good results can be obtained with other adhesives, including solvent-based adhesives. The support can comprise a single layer or multiple layers. HDPE is desirably 0.930-0.965, preferably 0.945-0. It has a density of 955, most preferably 0.950. The anti-adhesion substance can be any anti-adhesion substance known from the prior art, which is coated on the second surface of the support. Alternatively, an anti-adhesion substance can be incorporated within the second surface of the support. In a first preferred embodiment of the second aspect of the present invention the support comprises a single layer of HDPE. Advantageously, the second surface of the support has not been subjected to any form of surface treatment. In the first aspect, the support preferably comprises 50-100 wt% HDPE, more preferably 80-100 wt% HDPE. When the support comprises less than 100% by weight HDPE, it preferably comprises a blend of HDPE and at least one other olefin polymer. Preferred terpolymers of propylene are 1-10, preferably 2-6 wt% ethylene, 80-97, preferably 88-95 wt% propylene, and 1-20, preferably 2-15 wt% butene-1. including. Preferably, the support comprises antiblocking agents, or other additives. While such additives are not essential (HDPE has very good release properties without these additives), some additives may produce further improvements to release properties and other desirable properties. You can Particularly good results have been obtained with silicone oils, EBS, GMS and montan wax. The preferred silicone oil is polydialkyl-siloxane. When silicone oil is used, there is some migration of silicone oil to the surface of the adhesive after the film has been wound onto a roll. However, despite this transition, good adhesion with pressure sensitive adhesive coated surfaces was clearly shown. In a second preferred embodiment of the second aspect of the invention the support has 3 layers in a structure comprising a core layer sandwiched by 2 other layers. The first of the other layers comprises an adhesive coating on its outer surface. The second of the other layers comprises HDPE; the outer surface of the second layer faces away from the adhesive coating. Advantageously, the outer surface of the second layer has not undergone any kind of surface treatment. Particularly good results have been obtained with silicone oils, EBS, GBS and montan wax. The preferred silicone oil is polydialkylsiloxane. When silicone oil is used, there is some migration of silicone oil to the surface of the adhesive after the film has been wound onto a roll. However, despite this migration, good adhesion was clearly shown due to the presence of the pressure sensitive adhesive coated surface. Preferably, the core layer comprises expanded olefin polymer. The core layer desirably comprises a polymer of propylene, suitably a homopolymer polypropylene and preferably isotactic polypropylene. The core layer comprises voids. More specifically, the core layer can be cavitated, for example as disclosed in EP-A-00 83495. The preferred cavitating agent is polybutylene terephthalate, especially as spherical particles. The first layer comprises HDPE which has been treated to modify its surface properties. The first layer can comprise any of the materials described above for the second layer. If desired, the first layer can be the same material as the second layer. The surface treatments discussed above with respect to the second aspect of the invention may be achieved, for example, by exposing the surface to corona discharge, flame or oxidizing chemicals. Flame treatment is preferred. Preferably, the surface is treated to a surface activity of at least 36 dyne / cm (36 mN / m), more preferably at least 40 dyne / cm (40 mN / m). The pressure sensitive adhesives described above can be hot melt adhesives, solvent based adhesives or water based adhesives. The present invention can be used with all pressure sensitive adhesives used in prior art adhesive tapes. Specific adhesives that can be used are rubber and acrylic based adhesives, which have been described in detail in the prior art. The following example illustrates the invention. Example 1 Polypropylene homopolymer was fed into the feed hopper of a rotary screw extruder having a 2.5 inch (6.4 cm) diameter and an L: D ratio of 24: 1. HDPE (density 0.952) was also fed into a satellite extruder having a 1.5 inch (3.8 cm) diameter and an L: D ratio of 20: 1. Molten polyethylene was fed into a slot die fixed to the first extruder through an adapter designed to ensure that the stream of molten polyethylene covered both sides of the stream of molten polypropylene. The multilayer structure was then quenched on a chill roll to form a cast film which was immediately quenched in a cold water bath and sequentially biaxially stretched on conventional equipment. During stretching, the quenched film is first reheated to about 253 ° F (123 ° C), stretched 5 times in the machine direction between rollers at different speeds, and then to about 310 ° F (154 ° C). It was supplied to a heated transverse stretching machine (orientor) and stretched 8 times. The film with 0.6 μm HDPE skin on both sides was then cooled and trimmed. It was then flamed on one side to> 48 dynes / cm and wound onto rolls. Finally, the films were tested using the following procedure to show the release effect. Procedure: A standard adhesive tape containing pressure sensitive adhesive was applied lengthwise to the treated or untreated side of the produced film. This gives an adhesive coating on the produced film and a film structure according to the invention. These samples were (not) stored at 50 ° C. for 24 hours. The peel force required to separate both the standard tape and the test film was measured at 300 mm / min with the film test and adhesive at an angle of 90 °. Adhesive migration was observed when the samples were peeled at different angles (90 ° and 180 °). Measurements were made 3 times and averaged. The results are shown in Table 1. This test simulates what happens during the unwinding of a reel of tape consisting of a support layer and a pressure sensitive adhesive applied to the treated surface of the support layer. Example 2 Film A was prepared using HDPE as the first layer; polypropylene as the core; and HDPE as the second layer. This film was made by the same method as the film of Example 1. Example 3 Film B was made in the same manner as Example 1, but incorporating 12000 ppm of silicone oil in the second layer. Example 4 Film C was prepared in the same manner as Example 1, but incorporating 2000 ppm EBS in the second layer. Example 5 Film D was made in the same way as Example 1, but incorporating 2000 ppm GMS in the second layer. Example 6 Film E was made in the same manner as in Example 1, but incorporating 2000 ppm montan wax in the second layer. Example 7 Films A-E were tested using a procedure similar to Example 1. Standard adhesive tape was applied uniformly to the untreated side of each of Films A-E and measured on the untreated side with test tape at angles of 90 °, 135 ° and 180 ° at 300 mm / min. The percentage migration of the adhesive during sample peeling was also observed. The following films were also tested: Film F-Control Tape 35 μm Film G-PP terpolymer Film H-PP terpolymer + 20000 ppm EBS Film I-PP terpolymer + 2000 ppm GMS Film J-PP terpolymer + 2000 ppm Montane wax 5 times peel force measurements. And then averaged. Table 2 shows the results. The results in Table 2 show that the film structure according to the invention can be easily unwound from rolls, even without release films; and with less migration of adhesive than prior art film structures, Show that it can be unrolled easily. It is also noted that the film structure of the present invention can be unwound with less raise than prior art film structures.
