Abstract

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate the operation of a user for inputting a recording paper beadthways prior to paper feed by confining the starting and ending positions of printing within the width of a recording paper at the time of using a roll paper or a cut sheet of A4 size having left and right sides extending perpendicularly to the printing line. SOLUTION: A reflective photosensor 13 is disposed closely to the print nozzle 18 of a print head 11 having a plurality of print elements. This structure realizes a printer in which the printing can be confined surely within the paper width even in case of an irregular recording paper having left and right sides extending not perpendicularly to the printing line.

As can be seen from this figure, in order to start printing, the recording paper 5 is inserted, and after confirming that the recording position 5a has been reached by the signal change of the reflection type photo sensor 13, the print head 11 is driven. And print. However, if the shape of the recording paper 5 is a roll paper or a single-cut paper 16 such as A4 size whose right and left end faces are at right angles to the printing line as shown in 16 of FIG. After the user inputs the paper width to the printer controller, the recording paper 16 reaches the printing position 3a through the paper path by the reflection type photo sensor 13 fixed to the platen 3 by starting the paper feeding of the recording paper. By confirming that, it was possible to start printing from a desired position within the width of the recording paper 16, but the shape of the recording paper 5 was printed on the left and right end surfaces as shown in 16a of FIG. 3 (b). When a recording paper that is deformed at a right angle to the line is used, the recording paper 16a is not detected by the single reflective photosensor 13 that confirms that the recording paper 16a has reached the printing position 3a through the paper path.
Since it is not possible to confirm up to the paper width of, the printed characters run outside the paper width of the recording paper 16a when printed on the recording paper 16a. In order to prevent these problems, a plurality of reflective photosensors (not shown) are provided at positions parallel to the print line at the print position 3a as means for detecting the paper width of the recording paper. Even when the recording paper 16a which is deformed at a right angle to the print line is used, the detection method capable of confirming the paper width has been performed.

After the print start position is confirmed, a print drive circuit (not shown) is turned on to eject ink from the print nozzle 18 to start printing on the recording paper 5. The reflective photosensor 13 provided in the print head 11 that reciprocates in the digit direction even after printing is started confirms the presence or absence of the recording paper 5 by a signal waveform. When it is determined from the signal waveform of the reflective photosensor 13 that the recording sheet 5 is not present at the print position 3a, the print drive circuit is shut off and the ejection of ink from the print nozzle 18 is stopped. By this operation, for example, the recording paper 5 is changed to the one shown in FIG.
As shown in (b), even if the left and right end surfaces of the recording paper are not at right angles to the printing line, it is possible to reliably print within the paper width.
