(Problems to be Solved by the Invention) However, in such a conventional multicolor coating method,
It is necessary to perform the top coating process and the drying process twice,
It has the drawback of reducing productivity. In addition, after the coating is completed, a large step (usually a base coating of 15 μm and a clear coating of 35 μm, a total of about 50 μm in total) is generated, and the end surface of the clear coating shown in FIG. 7 becomes sharp. Also, it is not preferable in terms of appearance.

First, as shown in FIG. 1, the multicolor coating method of this embodiment includes an electrodeposition coating step, which is an undercoat coating step (not shown),
An intermediate coating step 1, a step 2 of drying the intermediate coating,
A masking member sticking step 3, a metallic base coating step 4 of a top coating, a masking member peeling step 5,
It is composed of a clear coating step 6 of the top coating material and a drying step 7 of the top coating material. The electrodeposition coating process removes oil, dust, etc. adhering to the outer plate of the automobile body, which is the work 8, and performs a pretreatment to oxidize the surface of the steel plate to form a phosphoric acid film, and then paint by a dipping method. Is a process of adhering, about 15 μm on the vertical surface of the vehicle body,
The film thickness is about 20 μm on the horizontal plane. The electrodeposition coating film is mainly intended to prevent rusting of steel plates constituting the vehicle body outer plate, and the outer electrode plate made of, for example, synthetic resin other than the steel plate may omit the electrodeposition coating step. It is possible.

The vehicle body that has undergone the electrodeposition coating step is transported to the sealing step, and the joints of the respective parts constituting the vehicle body are sealed for the purpose of preventing water from entering the room and preventing rust. Further, this vehicle body is conveyed to the intermediate coating step 1, and the intermediate coating material is applied in the intermediate coating booth. The intermediate coating film 10 is a paint that is applied to improve the adhesion of the top coating films 11 and 12 and to improve the weather resistance, and is a coating film having a constant color regardless of the color of the top coating film. And generally has a gray color. However, in the recently developed high-brightness top coat film, an intermediate coat paint colored in a predetermined color may be used.

As is clear from the cross-sectional view of FIG. 3, the intermediate coating film 10 used in this embodiment appears on the outer surface only through the clear coating film 12, and the ultraviolet rays that have passed through the clear coating film 12 are present. The composition is such that the intermediate coating film 10 is not deteriorated by the above. That is, the composition is as shown in Table 1 with the isophthalic acid linear polyester resin having excellent weather resistance as the main component.

Next, the vehicle body is transported to the masking member attaching step 3 and, if the painting imitating the letter "N" as shown in FIG. 2 is applied, the masking member 19 formed in this "N" shape is used.
Is attached to a predetermined position on the vehicle body. This masking member
For 19, a so-called adhesive tape having an adhesive applied on one side may be used, and the letter "N" can be easily formed by punching the outer shape of the press molding. However, the adhesive applied to the masking member 19 has a small surface tension, and it is necessary to select a material that has a small effect on the coating film 12 even if the clear paint is applied from above.

The vehicle body to which the masking member 19 has been attached in this way is conveyed to the topcoat booth, and first, the metallic base paint of the two-coat one-bake type paint is applied (metallic base coating step 4). The color of this base paint varies depending on the specifications of the vehicle body, and is sprayed on the surface of the vehicle body by an electrostatic coating device having a color changing device. After applying the base paint, the masking member 19 is peeled off in the same booth to form a character portion 14 which is a concave defect portion for exposing the intermediate coating film 10 at the position where the masking member 9 was located. (Masking member peeling step 5), and then clear coating is applied from above (clear coating step 6). This clear paint is also applied by the electrostatic coating device. The time from the application of the base paint to the application of the clear paint may normally be around 4 minutes. If this value cannot be ensured depending on the process conditions, the solvent mixed with the base paint or the clear paint is appropriately used. Just select it. For example, if the interval from base paint application to clear paint application is short,
The boiling point of the solvent mixed in the base paint may be lowered.

In this way, the base paint and the clear paint which are applied by the so-called wet-on-wet method without passing through the drying process are conveyed to the drying device and dried under the condition of 140 ° C. × 20 minutes holding. In this drying process, the clear coating material has a sharp decrease in viscosity immediately before the crosslinking reaction,
It flows so as to alleviate the step difference of the sticking trace of the masking member 19 generated on the base paint. Therefore, the top coat films 11 and 12 that have been dried are in a state in which the steps of the character portion 14 are almost eliminated, and are also suitable in terms of appearance.
