Abstract

PURPOSE:To perform the color space compression of colors outside of a color reproduction range to the colors inside the color reproduction range so as to maintain the tint of input pictures by performing the color space compression to the input pictures based on high saturation data in extracted plural respective hues and the high saturation data in the plural respective hues relating to a reproduction saturation range. CONSTITUTION:An encoder 11 obtains luminance signals Y and color difference signals R-Y and B-Y from input R, G and B signals, an arithmetic circuit 12 obtains the hues H and saturation C from the R-Y and the B-Y and a CPU 13 obtains the histogram of the saturation C for the respective hues H. Then, when the maximum saturation side of the input pictures exceeds the maximum value of output reproduction saturation, bias towards the large saturation is utilized and entire distribution is moved.
