By making an absorbent product using superabsorbents, it is possible to significantly reduce the bulk of the absorbent product. However, attempts to utilize superabsorbents in absorbent products such as diapers and sanitary napkins have so far been successful only to a limited extent. "Fixing" or sticking superabsorbents into absorbent products is quite difficult. U.S. Pat.No. 3,971,37
No. 9 discloses an absorbent product in which a layer of superabsorbent material is folded or wrapped with another absorbent structure. Second, superabsorbents absorb and retain hundreds of times their own weight in liquid, but have the disadvantage that the liquid does not readily penetrate into it. In an absorbent product, when the superabsorbent absorbs the liquid and swells rapidly without having the ability to permeate the liquid into it, the liquid itself forms a "block" and the rest or absorption of the superabsorbent Utilization of other absorbent materials in the product for absorption purposes is impeded.

New methods of utilizing superabsorbents in absorbent products have focused on incorporating the superabsorbent into the fibrous structure to avoid the "block" problem described above. U.S. Pat. No. 4,105,033 shows a method for incorporating superabsorbents into fibrous structures. U.S. Pat. No. 4,226,237 also describes a more improved fibrous structure of absorbent fibers and peat moss capable of dispersing superabsorbent material.

The present invention uses a novel approach for utilizing superabsorbents in absorbent products. Rather than an attempt to obtain a novel fibrous structure in which the superabsorbent is dispersed to prevent the formation of "blocks", the present invention is capable of producing "blocks" when used alone. Known fiber materials can be used, including some superabsorbents. In the absorbent product of the present invention, the superabsorbent may be dispersed in the fibrous structure or foam or may be present alone or with other components in the film. According to the invention, internal permeation means are provided in the absorbent product to select the liquid up to the superabsorbent. The permeation means surrounds or is folded around a plurality of individual layers containing superabsorbent material.

As schematically illustrated in FIG. 1, one embodiment of the absorbent article of the present invention, generally designated by the reference numeral 10, includes at least two separate layers 12 intermixed with a superabsorbent material. In addition, the absorbent product includes an S-shaped permeation means 14 wrapped around and between the superabsorbent layers. The present invention does not relate to the shape or configuration of the superabsorbent layer, and various materials containing the superabsorbent can be used. For example, the superabsorbent layer can be composed of superabsorbent mixed in the fiber layer or the foam layer. The method of incorporating the superabsorbent material into the fibrous layer or foam is not critical. This is because the liquid does not need to penetrate the super absorbent layer, and the surface of the super absorbent layer only needs to absorb the liquid. In fact, according to the invention, the superabsorbent layer can consist of a film formed wholly or partly of the superabsorbent. In the absorbent product of the present invention, the internal permeation means of the absorbent product carries the liquid to the superabsorbent material, so that there is no need for the superabsorbent layer to permeate or transport the liquid. Therefore, swelling of the superabsorbent material within the superabsorbent layer does not prevent the superabsorbent material from impeding the movement of liquid within the absorbent product. When the superabsorbent swells or saturates somewhere in the absorbent product, the internal permeation means simply transfers the liquid to be absorbed to the adjacent still absorbent superabsorbent.

The test data set forth below demonstrates the superiority of the absorbent product of the present invention having an internal permeation means. The absorbent capacity of three different diaper constructions with absorbent products as shown in Figure 1 was tested. In the test method adopted for the purpose of reproducing the actual use condition of diapers, each diaper is fixed around a life-sized doll, and a test solution is put into the diaper from the doll with a 150 milliliter aliquat between each aliquot. 2
Inject at intervals of 0 minutes. The test is stopped when leakage of the test solution is observed. Weigh the diaper before and after the test to determine the amount of test liquid absorbed in the diaper.
Each diaper is lined with a Visqueen polypropylene film co-extruded with the diaper body (17.5 inches x 12 inches, approximately 44.5 cm x 30.5 cm) and 100
The embossing was made of polypropylene fabric having a percentage embossing and a basis weight of 0.7 ounces / square yard (about 23.7 g / m 2 ), and a covering material having almost the same size. The super absorbent layer is manufactured by Henkel and has a basis weight of 8 grams / square foot (about 8.7 g / m 2.
2 ) Henkel fabric S6P. This Henkel fabric consists of two layers of tissue material with S6P-147, a powdery starch-acrylonitrile graft copolymer produced using cerium ions as a catalyst. In the No. 1 diaper, the absorbent body of the diaper provided between the upholstery sheet and the backing sheet is composed of two Henkel super-absorbent fiber layers S6P and is not equipped with an internal permeation means. The absorption capacity was 72.8 grams. In No. 2 diaper, the absorbent product put between the upholstery sheet and the backing sheet is
It consisted of two layers of the same Henkel fabric with an S-shaped permeation layer of tissue material in between. The absorbent capacity of No. 2 diaper was 165.9 grams. In the case of No. 3 diaper, the absorbent product placed between the backing sheet and the facing sheet consists of two layers of the same Henkel superabsorbent fiber and an S-shaped internal permeation layer made of "Orlon" (TM) fabric. It had been. No.3
The absorbency of the diaper was 179.1 grams.

FIG. 2 shows one embodiment of the absorbent product of the present invention schematically illustrated in FIG. In this embodiment, the absorbent product designated by the reference numeral 20 is a superabsorbent layer 22 of two sheets and a permeation layer.
26 and an internal permeation means 24 including a liquid transfer means 28. The permeation layer 26 may be made of any material as long as it has a property of permeating a liquid. It is not necessary for this material to have good absorption capacity or the ability to hold a liquid under stress. Suitable materials for use as the permeation layer are "Orlon" (TM) fabric, pulp tissue material or peat moss. Liquid transfer means can be provided between the permeation layer and at least the major surface of the superabsorbent layer. In the embodiments described above, the tissue layer of Henkel fabric acts as a liquid transfer means. The liquid transfer means 28 transfers the liquid from the permeation layer to the super absorbent layer. The use of a liquid transfer means in the middle serves to keep the internal permeation means, i.e. the flow path, open at all times, while the permeation layer is held while the liquid transfer means holds the liquid in order to allow the superabsorbent layer to absorb the liquid. Allows to inhale liquid.

Absorbent product 20 has major surfaces 32a and 32b, side edges 34 and edges not shown in the drawings. The absorbent product may include a partial envelope 30 of liquid impermeable material, which may cover at least one major surface 32a and side edges 34 of the absorbent product and may also cover both edges. Is.
Providing this partial envelope is preferred for the construction of absorbent products. This is because the liquid impermeable layer retains the liquid in the absorbent product, giving the liquid time to be absorbed by the superabsorbent layer. Further, in absorbent products using this outer envelope construction, the liquid impermeable layer hides discoloration and other absorbent materials, such as the tissue of the recrushed pulp used in the absorbent product, and becomes more wet. If the super absorbent material turns into a gel, it will be encapsulated and hidden. It is also possible to provide a facing layer 36 on the surface 32b of the non-partially covered side of this preferred absorbent product.

The superabsorbent used in the present invention has a dry weight of 10%.
It consists of various aqueous colloids or substances capable of forming aqueous gels, which have the ability to absorb liquids up to 30 times, preferably several hundred times. Many superabsorbents are known in the art, and the present invention describes the chemical or physical structure of the superabsorbent, as well as the superabsorbent placed in a fibrous layer with other materials, such as fibers. It is not related to the structure of the composite material. Superabsorbents tend to swell rapidly and prevent further passage of liquids, so in most end-use applications superabsorbents are mixed with other materials such as fibers and foams. Therefore, the super absorbent is dispersed so as not to block the flow of the liquid. Since the absorbent product of the present invention comprises a plurality of separately provided superabsorbent layers, the fiber layer or foam layer may be folded or bent so that the superabsorbent material is removed from the fiber layer or foam layer. It is possible to prevent things like going round and getting separated.
Further, the absorbent article construction of the present invention provides a simpler method of manufacture by folding the superabsorbent layer, and further, the length of the penetrant used in the permeate layer is shown in US Pat. No. 3,791,379. It is shorter than the one used in the folded shape like this.

As shown in FIG. 5, the absorbent article of the present invention relates to absorbent article 20 (or 40, not shown in FIG. 5) in FIG. 2 and body 2A (or FIG. 3) above. The outer layer 62 of the diaper, generally designated by the reference numeral 60, need not be liquid-impermeable when provided with the partial envelope 30 of liquid-impermeable material shown. In the preferred construction, the outer layer 62 of the absorbent product and the outer packet 30 are both formed of plastic film. By fixing the absorbent product in the diaper, the two plastic films are fixed and as a result reinforce the outer layer of the diaper. Since the adhesive tape piece 66 can be peeled off more easily from the above-mentioned two-layered plastic laminated sheet, the adhesive tape piece is made unusable by breaking the outer layer of the plastic film, and the inner absorbent material of the diaper is The diaper can be unfolded for use without having to come out and hang out.
In addition, the piece of adhesive tape can be removed cleanly. You can stop the diaper tightly. In the case of the absorbent production structure of the present invention including the outer packet 30, the gelled pulp or super absorbent material does not leak from the diaper.
