【発明の詳細な説明】
ディジタル画像伝送におけるデータ圧縮のための適応形量子化方法
ディジタル画像または画像列を伝送するためにデータを低減する際に一般的に行
われている手法は、画像領域をより小さな領域に、いわゆるブロック(第2図)
に分割することである。これらのブロックは代表的には8・8個または16・1
6個のビクセル(@素)の大きさである(第3図)。画像符号化のためにブロッ
クを用いたこの種の方法はいわゆる変換法であって、これらの変換法のうち最も
頻繁に利用される代表的なものは、いわゆる離散コサイン変換(D、C,T、)
である。第1a図ないし第1b図には、個別画像または画像列のためのこの形式
の符号化法のための信号の流れ図が示されている。
符号化の目的はデータの低減にあり、多くの事例ではこのデータ低減によりはじ
めて、画像または画像列のディジタル伝送が可能になる。この場合、公知の方式
は、画像信号の統計的特性をデータ低減に利用したいわゆる冗長性低減である。
冗長性低減だけを単独で利用した場合には、符号化されたデータから画像情報を
完璧に再現可能である。しかし冗長性低減を用いただけでは通常、係数2〜3分
の1だけしかデータを圧縮できない。しかし画像および画像列の符号化のほとん
どの適用事例においては、これよりも高い圧縮率が必要とされ、例えば高解像度
テレビジョン(高品位テレビジョン、HDTV)の場合には、少なくとも圧縮率
7が必要とされる。この種の圧縮座や、例えば画像電話の場合のようにさらに高
い圧縮率を得るためには、非関連性低減(相関性以外の観点からのデータ圧縮)
も用いなければならない。ところがこの場合には、元の信号情報が部分的に失わ
れてしまい、画像伝送エラーが発生する。しかしながらこのような画像エラーを
見る側にはわからないようにしたり、あるいはできるかぎり僅かにしか障害を及
ぼさないようにする努力がなされている。
変換符号化においては一般的に、1つの画像ブロックの変換領域における信号値
に対して冗長性低減と非関連性低減とがいっしょに用いられている。

DCTの場合には、これはいわゆるDCT係数である。非関連性低減における代
表的な手順は、一方ではDCT係数のサブセット全体を単に削除することであり
、他方では残った重要な係数をいっそう粗く量子化することである。つまりそれ
らの係数は、本来それらに対応づけられていたよりも粗い値のパターンで表ざれ
る、パターン値は、そのramさに関する尺度数Qで特徴づけることができる。
Qが大きくなるにつれてパターンも粗くなる。いわゆる線形量子化の場合には、
この尺度数はそのまま量子化ステップ幅となり、つまり2.つの隣り合うパター
ン値の間の1単位の間隔である。DCT係数の量子化の種々異なる形式が知られ
ている。いくつかの方法の場合、宿々の係数はそれぞれ異なる細かさで量子化さ
れる。この場合、種々異なる細かさは、係数の視覚的重要度に関する推定から導
出される。この種の方法は例えば、D、McLaren、 D、T。

ているように、すべての係数が同じ細かさで量子化される。
量子化の種々異なる形式により、種々異なる形式の画像エラーが生じる。しかし
DCTのような変換の場合には用いる量子化方式とは無関係に、この画像エラー
は通常、画像領域内のそれぞれ1つのブロック全体にわたって分布している。こ

く見えないか、あるいは多かれ少なかれ視覚的に障害を及ぼすかは、一方では元
の画像内容に依存し、他方では1つのブロックにおけるエラーの平均振幅に依存
する。この平均エラー振幅は、1つのブロックに対する前述の量子化パラメータ
と直接的に関連している。
Qを太き(設定すればするほど、1つのブロックの符号化に必要なデータレート
も大きくなるが、一般的に前記の平均エラー振幅も大きくなる。
ところで個別画像および画像列符号化の進歩的な方法においては、生じたデータ
レートに対する所定の限界を守らせる際に、画像エラーが視覚的にできるかぎり
僅かにしか障害を及ぼさないように、量子化パラメータQがブロックごとに画像
内容に整合(適応化)される、この場合、1つのブロックにおける画像内容が分
析され1分析結果に依存して量子化パラメータQが設定調整される。この分析は
、ビクセルブロックにおいて、つまり複数個の画素から成るブロックにおいて行
なわれるか、またはDCT係数から成るブロックにおいて行なわれる。複数個の
画素から成るブロックを分析する分析手法は、例えばMcLaren (Mac
laren 1990) およびTengler (Tengler 1990
)の刊行物に記載されている。しかしこれらの刊行物には、そこに記載された適
応形量子化方法において生じ得る欠点については言及されていない0本発明によ
る方法によりそれらの欠点が改善される。
次に、本発明を説明するにあたりそこにおいて採用されている用語内容や記述の
仕方について参照できるように、McLarenや%etravali の刊行
物に記載された分析手法の一般的な手順について簡単に説明する。
すでに知られている分析手法の場合、まず最初に1つのブロック内のすべてのビ
クセルの画像信号値から、いわゆるアクティビティ量を算出する。このアクティ
ビティ量の大きさは、考察するブロックのすべての画素の画像信号値の平均振幅
変動の強さに正比例している。 TenglerおよびJaszの論文の場合1
例えばアクティビティ量Aとして局所的なmfs信号gIi差の絶対値の和が用

この場合y (m、n)は、指標m、nを有するビクセルの画像信号値であり、
mはブロック内の行指擦、nはブロック内の列指擦であり、さらにM、Nは例え
ば8または16であるプロ″ツクの辺の長さである。
二のようにして算出されたアクティビティ量の関数として、準備的パラメータP
が、例えば表から得らnlつのブロックに対して実際に用いられる量子化パラメ
ータQは最終的にPから、スケーリング係数FQとの乗算により得られる。

Ter+glerの刊行物ならびにN4図に図示されている。
生じたデータレートの大きさに対する副次的条件が過度に厳しくない場合には、
W、Tenglerの論文中に記載されている適応形量子化手法によりすでに、
良好な画像品質が得られる。しかしそれにもかかわらず所定の画像内容において
は、量子化により生じた画像エラーが可視的になる場合がある。このような画像
内容とは、代表的には次のような特徴を有するものである。
すなわち、1つのブロックに、アクティビティの著しく大きな領域が、つまりコ
ントラストの高い精細なディテールが含まれ、かつアクティビティの著しく僅か
な領域も、つまり僅かにしか変化しない画像内容も含まれている可能性のあるこ
とを特徴とする画像内容である。
しかし上記の量子化パラメータの調整は、1つのブロック内のアクティビティが
相対的に同じ形状で分布しているという仮定のもとで、必要とされるデータレー
トを考慮し、かつ画像エラーを回避する目的で最適化されている。アクティビテ
ィが大きくなるζ:っれて画像エラーは大きくなってもよく、これは障害を及ぼ
して可視的になることはない、つまりデータレートを低減するために量子化パラ
メータをいっそう大きく設定調整してもよい。しかしここで想定した形式の、デ
ィジタル画像または画像列の符号化法の場合、量子化による画像エラーは一般的
に、1つのブロックにわたって均一に分布している。したがってブロック全体に
対して設定調整された量子化パラメータによって、アクティビティプの著しく大
きなブロックの一部分においては障害を及ぼして可視的になることはないにして
も、アクティビティの著しく僅かなブロックの一部分においては障害を及ぼして
可視的になる画像エラーが生じてしまう。
したがって本発明の課題は、上述の公知の方法による欠点を回避することにある
。この課題を解決するために、請求項1記載の特徴を有する、ディジタル画像ま
たは画像列の伝送におけるデータ低減のための適応形量子化方法が提供される。
本発明によれば、量子化パラメータQをめるために、画像領域内の1つのブロッ
ク自体がさらにL個のいっそう小さな部分領域E (1)に分割される(第5図
)、これらの部分領域は、番号1:=1.、、、Lで示されている。前述のよう
にして1つのブロック全体に対して行なっていたように、各部分領域E(1)に
対して、水平方向と垂直方向で隣り合うビクセル間の絶対的かつ局所的なビクセ
ル値偏差の和として、アクティビティ量A(+)が算出される:A=Σ (ly

l)この差分演算のためには、部分領域周縁部においてビクセル(+画素)が必
要とされる。これらのビクセルは、部分領域外に位置しており、例えばブロック
周縁部自体に位置している。各部分領域E (+)に対してアクティビティ量A
(1)から、部分領域1におけるアクティビティに特徴的なパラメータが算出さ
れる。
このブロックのすべての部分領域に関して総和をめることにより、部分領域lに
特徴的なパラメータP(1)から、このブロック全体に対する準備的パラメータ
Pが算出される。1つのブロックに実際に用いられる量子化パラメータQは、最
終的にPからスケーリングにより得られる。
このようにして算出された量子化パラメータQは実際に、種々異なるアクティブ
な画像成分を有する前述のクリティカルな状況において、いっそう良好に適合化
された量子化を行なわせる特性を有する。このことが意味するのは、本発明によ
る方法を用いることによリクリティカルな画像内容を有するブロックにおいて、
通常、前述の公知の方法よりも著しく細かな量子化が一設定される二とである。
本発明による方法によってもデータレートと画像エラーの間の局所的な関係が劣
化されないということは、次のようにして説明できる。すなわち1局所的なデー
タレートと局所的な画像エラーに対して最適化された関数00は、ブロック全体
に対してではなく、いっそう小さな部分領域に対して用いられ、しかも有利な実
施形態においては、個々のビクセルならびにそれに隣り合うビクセルに対して用
いられる。したがって本発明による量子化パラメータの算出は、データレートお
よび画像エラーに関する作用において、単に1つのブロック領域に関する平均化
としてとらえることができる。
本発明による方法の利点は、その規則性にある。これは僅かな回数の簡単なJl
i[の繰り返しにより構成されている。このことに付随する簡単な制御構成ゆえ
に、集積回路を用いて実現するのに極めて良好に適している0例えば、部分領域
に対応づけられた演算を同時に平行して実施できる。
本発明による方法の別の利点は次の点にある。すなわちこの方法を、例えばL
Ter+glerの論文に記載されている;うな既存の符号化手法に、所要の変
更によっても方法全体を実買的に複雑にすることな(、容易に導入できる。例え
ば、W、 Tenglerの論文中に記載された方法においてブロックに関連づ
けられた、式(1)に定義されているような絶対的かつ局所的な偏差の和Aを、
適応形量子化に対するアクティビティ量として用いるだけでなく、符号化手法の
種々異なるモード間の切換基準としても用いる。この場合、算出された複数個の
パラメータAのうちの1つを、上記の切換基準に用いるだけでなく、適応形量子
化のためのアクティビティ量としても同時に用いる。したがって上記のパラメー
タを付加的にめる必要はない。
請求項2以下には本発明の実施形態が示されている。
第1a図は、適応形量子化による変換符号化法の信号の流れを示す図であり、こ
の場合、量子化パラメータは画像ブロック分析により得られる。
第1b図は、ブロックごとの変換を含む画像符号化のための差分パルス符号変調
法の信号の流れを示す図である。
第2図は、1つの画像を複数個のブロックに分割する様子を示す図である。
第3図は、複数個の画素(ep)から1つのブロックが構成されている様子を示
す図であり、矢印によって隣り合う画素間における差分演算が示されている。
第4図は、関数Q0の代表的な特性経過をアクティビティ量Aの関数として示す
図である。
第5図は、1つの画像ブロックをいっそう小さい部分備mE[l)に分割する様

第6図は、1つの画像ブロックを、個々の画素およびそれらの最も近い隣接画素

次に、有利な実施例および図面を参照して本発明を説明する。
画像または画像列のエレメントを伝送するために、伝送すべきディジタル画像は
まずはじめに複数個のブロック(第2図)に分割される。第3図に示されている
ように、各ブロックは複数個の画素ep(ビクセル)から成る。この方法を実施
するために、各ブロックはいっそう小さな部分領域E (1)に分割される。こ
こにおいて1・=1.、、、、Lである。この場合、各部分領域E(1)は通常
、複数個の隣り合う′#i素を囲んでいる(I!5図)1本発明の有利な実施形
態の場合、各部分子II域E (+)は1つの画素と、この画素l二直接隣り合
う次の行ないし次の列の両方の画素により構成されている(第6図)、。
第7図には、二の方法の信号の流れ図が示されている。まずはじめに各ブロック
のすべての部分領域E(1)に対して、式(3)で定義されたアクティビティ量
Aを算出する。このアクティビティ量A(1)はいずれの部分領域E(1)に対
しも、部分領域E(1)におけるすべての画素の画像信号差の絶対値の和である
。この定義ゆえに、該当する部分領域E(1)内の画像信号が均質であれば、上
記のアクティビティ量は0である。これに対して、ある部分領域E (+)内に
おける画像信号値が著しく変化すれば、この部分領域に対するアクティビティ量
A(1)は0がら著しく異なるものになり、この部分領域E(1)内の画像信号
値の変化が大きくなるにつれて、アクティビティ量も大きくなる。次に、各部分
領域E(1)に対して、その領域に対して算出されたアクティビティ量A(1)
を用いてパラメータP (1)を算出する。このパラメータはアクティビティ量
A(1)の関数Q0である。
この関係は、式(1)にも示されている。有利にはこの間数Q0は、アクティビ
ティ量の可能な多値を所属のパラメータに対応づける表によって実現される。
関数Q0は、適切に選定され有利には単調に上昇する、アクティビティ量Aの凸
関数であり、この関数は有利には、アクティビティAの値が大きくなるにつれこ
の関数の上昇が僅かになるように選定される。j!4図にはアクティビティ量A
の関数として、この間数Q。の代表的な経過特性が示されている。関数Q0の最
適な選定は、伝送すべき画像内容の特性と、伝送特性および画像品質を考慮した
この方法の利用者の優先選択性とに依存する。関数Q。の経過特性の可能な有利
な選定ニツイテは、例えば1990年のW、 Tenglerの刊行物に示され
ている。
この方法の次のステップにおいて、すべての部分領域E(1)のパラメータP
(1)の和をめることにより、隣り合うブロックのアクティビティに特徴的なパ
ラメータPが得られる。そしてこのパラメータPから各ブロックに対して直接、
所属の量子化パラメータにより得られる。
したがってパラメータQは公知の方法と全(同じようにパラメータPから算出さ
れるが、パラメータPを算出する際にL個の部分領域に関する和をめることから
、このスケーリングにおいてして除算する必要がある。このことは式(4)中で
考慮されている。
ここで述べた方法の著しい利点とは、この方法を用いることにより従来技術にお
いて慣用の方式で、複数個の画像ブロックの分析により各画像ブロックに対して
量子化パラメータがめられることである。この理由から、分析手法のインターフ
ェースは他の符号化方式に対しても変えられない。したがってこの方法は、何の
問題もな(公知の符号化方式(第1a図、第1b図)と関連させて利用できる。
他方、ここで述べた方法を用いることにより、画像ブロックの画像内容を、従来
技術で公知の方法の場合よりも著しく詳細に分析できる。したがってここで述べ
た方法によりめられた量子化パラメータQは、公知の方法よりもいっそう良好に

Claims (4)
- 1.ディジタル面像伝送におけるデータ圧縮のための適応形量子化方法において 、 a)伝送すべき画像領域を複数個のブロックに分割するステップと、 b)各ブロックを1=1,...,しである部分領域E(1)に分節するステッ プと、 c)各部分領域E(1)に対してアクティビティ量A(1)を求めるステップと 、 d)各部分領域E(1)に対して前記アクティビティ量A(1)から関数Qoを 用いて式 P(1)=Q。(A(1)) によりパラメータP(1)を求めるステップと、e)各ブロックのすべの部分領 域E(1)にわたり和を求めることにより、各ブロックを特徴づけるパラメータ P=ΣP(1) を算出するステップと、 f)各ブロックに対して前記パラメータPからスケーリング係数Foを用いて量 子化パラメータQ=Fo/L・P を算出するステップと、 g)伝送すべき画像領域をブロックごとに変換し、ここにおいて各ブロックに対 しそれぞれのブロックに属する量子化パラメータQの値に依存して量子化される 変換係鋏を求めるステップとを有することを特徴とする、 ディジタル画像伝送におけるデータ圧縮のための適応形量子化方法。
- 2.前記アクティビティ量は式 A=Σ(ly(m,n+1)−y(m,n)I+Iy(m+1,n)−y(m, n)I)により得られ、ここにおいてmないしnは、1つの画像ブロックの1つ の部分領域内における画素の指標を表わし、yは画像信号を表す、請求項1記載 の方法。
- 3.伝送すべき画像領域を変換するために離散コサイン変換を用いる、請求項1 または2記載の方法。
- 4.ブロックの部分領域はそれぞれ、1つの画素と、次の行ないし次の列の、該 画素に最も近い隣り合う画素とから成る、請求項1〜3のいずれか1項記載の方 法。
