2. Description of the Related Art Conventionally, molded trays, which are trays having a plurality of container holding receiving portions for holding one or a plurality of containers, have been used in fast food restaurants. Such trays also typically include a portion for receiving other food products. U.S. Pat. No. 4,218,008 discloses a molded tray that holds two containers in a range of sizes. A container holding receptacle of the tray is provided side by side at one end of the tray, and the rest of the tray is used for holding other foods. The recent rapid growth of the fast food industry has created changes that are limiting the truly versatile use of container carrier trays.
For example, in fast food restaurants, small containers are typically from 8 ounces or about 237 cc to a maximum of 22 ounces or about 651 cc. US Patent No. 4,21
The 8,008 tray may be sufficient to hold 8 to 22 ounce containers, but is not suitable for the 32 ounce jumbo size beverage containers currently used in fast food restaurants. Another constraint in designing trays for fast food restaurants is that they must be large enough to slide in and out of the takeout window. The width of the takeout window is generally about 10.5-11.
Since it is 5 inches or about 26.7 to 29.2 cm, the width of the tray must be smaller than this to get through the window. This is a maximum of 32 ounces or about 947
It becomes difficult to design a molding tray that can hold containers of different sizes up to cc.

The integrated tray 10 according to the present invention comprises a screen-covered, ope-molded mold covered with a screen.
An elastic material such as a fibrous material is molded into a substantially finished shape by a known method using n-faced, vacuum forming molds). However, the tray 10 may be molded into a substantially finished shape with a material such as a plastic foam having advantageous properties in terms of cost, strength and elasticity with respect to this kind of tray. The entire tray 10 is composed of horizontal walls and inclined walls, and has almost no vertical walls, so a large number of light empty trays can be nested in the top and bottom for convenient and economical storage during loading and storage in an unused state. In addition, they can be stacked compactly and easily.

Each container holding part 20 has three horizontal stabilizing shoulders 22 around it, which are spaced apart from each other. In the illustrated embodiment, the three stable shoulders 22 are arranged at substantially equal intervals around the container holding portion 20, but this is not an essential requirement of the present invention. Similarly, the present invention may be practiced with more than three stable shoulders provided that they do not impair other operational features of the container retainer. In the illustrated embodiment, three stable shoulders 22
Each working portion matches a circle having a diameter slightly larger than the diameter occupied by the container C having the largest size within the receiving range of the container holding portion 20 in the container holding portion. When such a large container C has an inclined wall, the diameter occupied by the container C is the height corresponding to the stable shoulder portion 22 of the container holding receiving portion 20 when the container C is sufficiently inserted into the container holding receiving portion 20. It is the diameter of the container C.

As best shown in FIG. 5, the stabilizing shoulder 22 is at a position well above the height occupied by the bottom of the container C fully inserted into the container holder 20. Container C
It is the substantially horizontal, for example web-shaped, bottom wall portion 24 of the tray 10 which determines the bottom height of the tray 10, which is attached to the inclined wall 28 of the tray 10 and the three stable shoulders around the container holding receptacle 20. Connections are made at three points 26 between the parts 22. Therefore, the container C is slightly raised above the bottom wall of the tray 10.

Further characterizing the container retention receiving portion 20 are three inwardly formed stabilizing walls 30, each extending below each stabilizing shoulder 22. The stabilizing wall 30 extends downwardly to a position just above the height of the upper surface of the bottom wall portion 24. In the illustrated embodiment, the stabilizer wall 30 extends downwardly to a position about 1.5 inches or 3.8 cm above the bottom wall portion 24, while the stabilizer wall 30A includes the bottom wall portion 24A.
It extends to a position about 2 inches or 5.1 cm above.

The stabilizing wall 30 is formed inward such that its lower portion 34 can correctly position the smallest container C within the receiving range of the container holding receiving portion 20. That is, the lower portions 34 of the three stabilizing walls 30 act to position the container C at the center during and after the container C is inserted into the container holding receiving portion 20. In the case of the container C having the smallest size, the container holding unit 2
When the container C bottom is placed on the flat bottom wall portion 24 by fully inserting into 0, the lower portion 34 of the stabilizing wall 30 is slightly elastically pressed to place the container C on the flat bottom wall portion 24. Support correctly and upright in the state.

Since the stabilizing wall 30 is flexible, at least the lower portion 34 thereof can extend outward to support the medium or large container C. The flexibility of the stabilizing wall depends on several factors, namely the thickness, density and nature of the fibrous pulp or plastic material that makes up the tray 10 and stabilizing wall 30, the curvature of the inward portion of the stabilizing wall 30, the stability. It is controlled by the inclination angle with respect to the perpendicular of the innermost portion of the wall 30.

Another means of controlling the flexibility of the stabilizing walls 30 includes an upwardly facing slot 36 extending from the lower end 32 of each stabilizing wall 30. The slot 36 divides at least the lower portion 34 of the stabilizing wall 30 into two separate container contact portions. In the preferred embodiment shown, each slot 36 extends upwardly over all upper and lower surfaces of the stabilizing wall 30 and intersects the stabilizing shoulder 22. This actually divides the working part of each stabilizing shoulder 22 into two sets of parts that contact the wide side of the container C.

Accordingly, each elongated hole 36 forms an inverted T-shaped notch below each stabilizing wall 30 of the tray 10 together with a notch below the lower end 32 of each stabilizing wall 30. In the preferred embodiment, each slot 36 has a generally uniform width throughout the up and down direction. However, although the portion adjacent to the lower end 32 of the stabilizing wall 30 is widened, this does not impair the working principle of the present invention.

In the illustrated embodiment, the inverted T-shaped notches that characterize each elongated hole 36 for stabilization are not wide and tray 10 is not provided with large notches or holes. This improves the aesthetics of the tray. In addition, the three downwardly-facing slots 3 associated with each container holder 20
6 serves to guide the bottom of the container C when the container C is inserted vertically downward into the container holding receiving portion 20. This facilitates centering of the container C during and after insertion into the container holding receiving portion 20, and serves to expand the container contact portion of each stabilizing wall 30, especially the lower portion 34 thereof, to the outside.

As shown in the scaled-down drawings, the tray 10 is generally rectangular, preferably 9.5 inches by 9.375 inches or about 24.1 cm by about 23.8 c.
The total height in m-square is about 2.185 inches or about 5.5 cm. The distance from each corner of the container holding portion 21 to each inclined wall that directly intersects the central top wall portion 40 is, for example, about 3.75 inches, that is, about 9.5 cm. Distance to 40 is about 3.0125 inches or about 7.9c
m. As best shown in FIG. 1, the individual container retainers 20, 21 are somewhat pear-shaped rather than circular because the stabilizing walls 30, 30A are generally curved indentations. The length of the tray is 9.5 inches or about 24.1.
Being less than or equal to cm, the tray 10 can easily pass through conventional takeout windows.
