Detailed Description of the Invention [Industrial Field of Application] The present invention is applicable to continuous running in the production of recording materials such as photographic film and photographic paper, photolithographic materials, pressure-sensitive recording paper, and heat-sensitive recording paper. Regarding a method of applying a liquid coating composition to a long flexible support (hereinafter referred to as a web), more specifically, a method of applying a liquid coating composition to a continuously running web with two or more coating liquid films superimposed on each other. The present invention relates to a multilayer simultaneous coating method.

That is, in order to achieve the purpose of improving high-speed coating, this coating method uses a low viscosity liquid of 1 to 8 cps as the bottom layer and has a wet coverage of 2 to 12 cm 3 per 1 m 2 of the web surface.
In this method, the coating speed is increased by applying the vortices generated by the meniscus so that the vortex generated by the meniscus only mixes the bottom layer and the layer directly above it, and does not affect the layer above it.

In addition, Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 1350/1983 discloses that the next layer to the web is 20 to 200 cps at a shear rate of 100 sec -1 .
A method is proposed to apply a dilute carrier layer of a pseudoplastic liquid with a viscosity of less than 10 cps at a viscosity of 100000 s and a shear rate of 100000 s . That is, in order to improve the instability of the bead portion as described above (Japanese Patent Publication No. 56-20534), this coating method uses a layer that has a high viscosity under low shear rates and a low viscosity under high shear rates in the bottom layer. It was designed to use a pseudoplastic liquid having .

When using the above coating method, the coating liquid forming the bottom layer has a property of exhibiting non-Newtonian flow. Further, in this case, it was necessary to select and prepare a special composition for the coating liquid.

The present invention eliminates the above-mentioned drawbacks of conventional coating methods, eliminates interlayer mixing between the bottom layer and the layer immediately above it, and also provides special coating for the bottom layer.
The object of the present invention is to provide a novel multilayer simultaneous coating method that enables high-speed and stable coating while minimizing the increase in drying time without adding expensive compositions.

The inventor of the present invention conducted intensive experimental studies on a method of high-speed coating using a low viscosity liquid as the bottom layer, and found that the bottom layer was water with Newtonian flow and the wet coating amount was 2 cm per 1 m 2 of the web surface. Surprisingly, it has been found that when the layer is made as ultra-thin as 3 or less, the suitability for high-speed coating is not lost, and interlayer mixing between the bottom layer and the layer immediately above due to swirling in the bead does not occur.

Moreover, it is surprising that the very regular coating failures occurring in the direction of web travel, at intervals of a few millimeters, occur during high-speed coating in slide hopper coating equipment, which is well known to those skilled in the art. (Refer to Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 60-255172), it has been found that the method of the present invention has an epoch-making effect.

In the present invention, the lowermost coating film adjacent to the web is formed with water and the wet coating amount is 2 cm 3 or less per 1 m 2 of the web surface, thereby improving the wetting of the coating solution with the support, which is caused by swirling of the bead portion. It is possible to obtain uniform coating quality without worrying about mixing of coating liquids and without the occurrence of coating streaks caused by the bottom layer, and the coating speed can be significantly increased.

By using a water-soluble coating composition, the wetting of the web and the bottom layer film is good, the bead is stable, there is no interlayer mixing with the layer above it, and there are no coating streaks caused by the bottom layer. It was possible to significantly increase the coating speed without any occurrence.
