When the focal point is at the rear, the subject images are separated from each other. Since the relative position displacement amount of the subject image has a specific functional relationship with the defocus amount of the photographing lens, if an appropriate calculation is performed for each sensor output in each sensor row pair, the defocus amount of the photographing lens, A so-called defocus amount can be detected.

Alternatively, a switch that determines an exposure mode (not shown) or a switch that determines the automatic focus adjustment (AF) mode of the camera can be always read. That is, it is read whether the AF mode setting switch is the one-shot mode (the focus is locked once the focus is set) or the servo mode (the focus is detected regardless of whether the focus is set or not). When the switch is switched, the switch sensor circuit 4 performs serial communication via the DBU and communicates each switch information to the microcomputer 1. a, SNS-2b, (see FIG. 3), which is storage-controlled by a control signal from the drive circuit SDR. The drive circuit SDR starts the accumulation of the sensor when receiving the sensor accumulation start signal from the microcomputer 1, and accumulates until the accumulation level of the sensor becomes constant. When the accumulation level becomes constant, the accumulation of the sensor is terminated, and the termination of the accumulation of the sensor is serially communicated to the microcomputer 1 via the DBU. When the microcomputer 1 reads the sensor signal and communicates with the drive circuit SDR, the drive circuit SDR outputs the sensor drive signal to the line sensor device SNS. The microcomputer 1 reads the signal accumulated in the line sensor, performs AD conversion in synchronism with the sensor drive signal, and determines from the AD-converted image signal of the subject which position the subject is focused by the photographing lens. It is detected by calculation using the existing phase difference detection method.

If the object is out of focus, step 106 is performed to perform the AF operation. In the in-focus state, the amount of camera shake is detected in step 107, and the exposure control value is calculated from the EV value determined in step 104 and the amount of camera shake detected in step 107 in step 108. When the accumulation of the image information is completed, the process proceeds to step 404 to detect the image change. The image change detection detects a deviation amount between the image signal accumulated this time and the image signal accumulated last time. In actual camera shake, most of the movement does not move in only one direction, but in the secondary direction in the vertical and horizontal directions. Therefore, the shift amount in both the vertical direction and the horizontal direction is obtained.
