It has been used for gradation display of a display using STN (super twist nematic) liquid crystal of multiplex drive. In this method, for example, in order to display 8 gradations, one still image is simply displayed in 8 frames. The brightest image is written 8 times, the next brightest image is

Therefore, assuming that the frequency is 30 Hz at which flicker is not felt, in the case of the above 8 gradations, it is necessary to set about 30 frames × 8 gradations = 240 Hz. In order to do this, it is difficult to increase the speed of the driving driver, but in reality, gradation display is performed at a frequency that does not require a high-speed driving driver that causes some flicker.

It will be easier. In addition, the number of gray levels that can be displayed depends on the variation in the electrical characteristics of the TFT element, and it is difficult to make a large-sized liquid crystal display with little variation.
Currently, the number of gradations that can be displayed is limited to about 16 gradations.

In addition, it is difficult to transmit a voltage having a short pulse width without distortion because the transmission line has a finite resistance and capacity, and the distortion of the pulse voltage causes insufficient charging of the liquid crystal and occurrence of crosstalk. Further, since the pulse width and the density of the gradation are not linear, it is necessary to divide the pulse width more than the number of gradations, which makes the multi-gradation more difficult.

It is characterized in that gradation display is performed in combination with the gradation display method of. Specifically, pixel electrodes are arranged in a matrix array on a transparent insulating substrate, and the pixel electrodes are time-divided in a liquid crystal display device in which each pixel electrode is driven by time-division of the screen display time. The gradation display method for a liquid crystal display device is characterized in that the liquid crystal display device is caused to perform gradation display by increasing or decreasing the brightness of the backlight corresponding to the driving of the pixel electrodes. In particular, when displaying a still one screen in two frames or fields, the brightness of the backlight is changed between the first frame (field) and the second frame (field), or the gradation display method by driving the pixel electrodes. It is useful to combine the two. Further, as the liquid crystal display device, a controller that divides the liquid crystal display device drive signal into a backlight brightness adjustment signal and a scanning signal, and the brightness of the backlight of the liquid crystal display device that adjusts the backlight brightness based on the backlight brightness adjustment signal. It is useful to use a liquid crystal display device equipped with adjusting means. Among them, the substrate needs to be transparent and insulating. The pixel electrodes may be other than those arranged in a matrix array, but it is not easy to adjust the brightness unless the sizes of the pixel units are uniform. The pixel electrodes, which are columns and which are rows, vary depending on the definition, but it is general that scan lines are arranged in the column direction and are formed in stripes in the row direction of the transparent insulating substrate and the pixel electrodes. As a driving method, it is possible to use, in addition to multiplex driving, active matrix driving, etc., a method of driving in time division for each pixel. Naturally, it is necessary to synchronize the pixel scanning and the brightness of the backlight. Further, in the case of displaying a still single screen in two frames or fields, gradation display can be performed by changing the brightness of the backlight in the first frame (field) and the second frame (field). When combined with a conventional gradation display method (frame thinning, peak value control, pulse width modulation, etc.), gradation display can be further enhanced.

A liquid crystal panel that has been defective due to uneven TFT characteristics can be shipped as a product, and the yield can be improved, that is, the manufacturing cost can be kept low. Further, in the conventional display capable of uniform display with little TFT characteristic unevenness, it is possible to display more multi-gradation by combining with this gradation display method.
