B. Prior Art Magnetic tape is a common information recording medium. For example, in a cash card for automatic cash withdrawal which is becoming increasingly popular due to the adoption of online systems by banks, a certain length of magnetic tape 2 is affixed to a part of the surface of the card 1, as shown in FIG. This magnetic tape 2 records information such as the bank name, cardholder name, account number, and PIN number.
Played during automatic cash withdrawal. However, because the magnetic tape 2 is limited by its short length, the amount of information that can be recorded is relatively small, and if the recorded information changes, the entire card must be replaced, and the magnetic tape 2 is not affected by external magnetic fields. It was easy to receive and required careful handling.

Further, since the magnetic tape 2 is usually of a single color and a single shape, the information cannot be visually confirmed. Recently, barcodes have been increasingly used on cards as an information display means that allows information to be easily recognized. For example, a barcode is a black and white vertical striped ink printed on a substrate 3, such as a card, as shown in Figure 2.A reading device is scanned across this barcode 4 in a direction orthogonal to it, and the reflected light is converted into an electrical signal. By converting to , the information recorded in the width of the white part and the black part of the barcode 4 can be read. Barcodes 4 like this can be roughly determined by visual reading, and are convenient to handle because they are not affected by external magnetic fields like magnetic tape, but compared to magnetic tape, the information recorded is With significantly smaller drawbacks.

(d) Configuration of the invention In a recording medium in which an information display portion consisting of a plurality of pattern elements representing first information is formed on a substrate so that it can be visually determined, the pattern elements contain second information other than the first information. It is formed of an optical recording layer that is used for recording and reproduction. The recording capacity per unit area of this optical recording layer is much larger than that of a magnetic tape, and the recorded contents are more stable than magnetic recording, unaffected by the external world. Furthermore, information can be conveniently displayed using the entire shape of the optical recording layer.

E. Embodiment In the embodiments shown in FIGS. 3 to 5, 5 is a substrate on a card such as plastic, and 6 is a visually readable information display portion formed on the substrate 5, such as a barcode pattern element. 6a, 6b, 6c...
The display section consists of... A large number of black bars in this barcode display section 6 are formed by the following optical recording layers 7, 7, . . . . Each optical recording layer 7, 7, . . . is formed by selectively depositing a material on the substrate 5 that allows information to be recorded and reproduced by light. Optical recording layer 7, 7...
As the material, for example, metal tellurium or metal bismuth, which is a metal with a low melting point and low thermal conductivity, is used, and information recording is performed as follows. Unique optical recording layer 7
Considering this, first, one corner of the optical recording layer 7 is optically detected, and a laser beam spot is selectively irradiated from this one corner along the longitudinal direction of the optical recording layer 7 according to the information to be recorded. and scan. Then, the area hit by the laser beam melts and a hole is formed, forming a series of so-called pits 8, 8, etc., and recording is performed. An information track 9 formed by this series of pits 8, 8, . . . is formed one by one for each optical recording layer 7. Then, for reproduction, first the 1 of the optical recording layer 7
Information is obtained by detecting a corner, analyzing the position of the information track 9, irradiating a laser beam along the information track 9, and converting the reflected light into an electrical signal.

For example, when used for a bank cash card, the barcode display section 6 formed by each optical recording layer 7, 7... displays information such as the bank name, cardholder name, account number, etc., and this can be read using a normal bar code. This is done by optical scanning in the same way as the code. Moreover, each optical recording layer 7,
The contents recorded in 7 are effective because changing information such as the date and time of card use and the amount of cash deposited and withdrawn can be added.
