Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a same vertical resolution as that of an existing cathode ray tube by providing two switching transistors (TRs) to an electrode of an active matrix type liquid crystal display television receiver and switching each switching TR so as to apply AC drive to the liquid crystal. CONSTITUTION:A liquid crystal television receiver is a television receiver in which two switching TRs (TFT) 1, TFT 2 are provided in an electrode for one picture element G in a liquid crystal television receiver and the TFTs 1, 2 are switched for each field by using scanning signals 8, 9 to apply AC drive to the liquid crystal 4 by video signals 6, 7. Horizontal drivers 15, 16 are provided to upper and lower positions of the liquid crystal panel and vertical drivers 17, 18 are provided to left and right positions respectively and an output corresponding to the video signals 6, 7 and the scanning signals 8, 9 is obtained from respect outputs. An input level to each horizontal driver is in coordination with the AC drive of the liquid crystal. Through the operation above, the same vertical resolution as that of an existing cathode ray tube is obtained on the actual liquid crystal panel.

One line is provided for each x. 3 is a signal storage capacitor, 4 is a liquid crystal, and 5 is a common electrode. The liquid crystal 4 is driven by applying a voltage to the gate of the transistor 1 in response to a scanning signal on the line L2, thereby making the transistor 1 conductive, so that the video signal on the line L1 is transmitted to the liquid crystal and displayed.

When driving a liquid crystal for television using the conventional liquid crystal display electrodes described above, it is not possible to obtain the same vertical resolution as current televisions. Next, this will be explained using an example. Due to the nature of liquid crystals, they must be driven by alternating current, and flicker interference must be eliminated for visual perception.
When displaying an actual television signal on a liquid crystal display, as shown in FIG. 7, the 1st line and the 263rd line in one frame are scanned at the same location, and each is driven with alternating current. In this case, the number of scanning lines is half that of the current TV cathode ray tube display, so the vertical resolution deteriorates. Also, as shown in Figure 8, the number of scanning lines to be displayed is twice that of Figure 7 (the number of vertical scanning lines in Figures 7 and 8 is 240 and 480 lines, respectively). Although there are some devices that improve vertical resolution by driving two lines simultaneously, these also have lower vertical resolution than current TV cathode ray tube displays. In the end, in order to obtain the same vertical resolution as the current cathode ray tube display in the LCD display of TV signals, it is necessary to
It must perform the same scanning as a cathode ray tube.
