Conventionally, nuclear reactors have been operated under base load operation (100% core output at 100% core flow rate). In this operation, control rods are inserted at the beginning of the cycle (hereinafter referred to as BOC) to suppress reactivity, and as the cycle progresses, the insertion density of the control rods is changed to adjust the core output to the rated value. As the cycle approaches the end, the reactivity decreases and a point is reached where the core power cannot reach 100% even if all control rods are withdrawn, and this point is referred to as the end of the cycle (hereinafter referred to as EOC). Once EOC occurs, the fuel that has already been burned will be replaced with new fuel and the next new cycle will begin.

Operating at less than the rated output for a certain period of time is called coast-down (day-rating) operation.

The solid and dotted curves in the figure indicate Keff during rated operation and coastdown operation, respectively. In this figure, the coastdown operation period is constant (or the coastdown operation output drop level is constant). When cycle burn-up E 0 is when only rated operation is performed, and cycle burn-up E o including coast-down operation in cycle n, cycle burn-up gain Δn (≡E o - E 0 ) varies depending on the cycle, but converges to a certain constant value after many cycles.
