The present invention relates to a method for producing α-arylalkanoic acid or a salt thereof, which is characterized in that it leads to -arylalkanoic acid.

Disadvantages of this method are that the reaction must be carried out in an anhydrous medium and that the effective Lewis acids are salts of toxic heavy metals, requiring careful purification if the final product is to be used in medicine. This is the point. This purification step can be successfully carried out by isolating the ester, but then the rearrangement and hydrolysis steps cannot be carried out in a sequence.

In this method, in the absence of a halogen-affinity catalyst, halogen atoms cannot sufficiently promote the rearrangement, and sulfonyloxy groups such as tosyloxy and mesyloxy are removed from the substrate by contact with a protic polar medium. This is due to the preconception that common knowledge is easily dissociated.

- It is a complicated and difficult method to hydrolyze sulfonyl oxyketals. Because of the large number of steps involved and the difficulty of carrying out certain steps on a large scale, simpler and more economical methods are desired.

However, in a highly hydrophilic protic medium, the reaction rate is conversely high. Of course, the reaction rate can also be increased by increasing the reaction temperature.

Examples of suitable bases are alkali metal and alkaline earth metal hydroxides and salts. This process is usually completed in a few minutes to a few hours at 20° to 100°. Salts of .alpha.-arylalkanoic acids are obtained which, if desired, are converted to free .alpha.-arylalkanoic acids by acid treatment.
