Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide the subject feed containing carotenoid and highly effective for keeping and improving the health of flatfish and puffer. CONSTITUTION:The objective feed is produced by adding a carotenoid such as astaxanthin and beta-carotene to a formula feed composed of e.g. fish meal (e.g. brown fish meal), minced meat of sardine, etc., gum (e.g. casein), feed yeast (e.g. beer yeast), oil and fat (e.g. fish oil), vitamins and minerals. The amount of the carotenoid is preferably 10-100mg per 1kg of the feed.

They were divided into groups and housed in water tanks (1 m3) installed on land. Each of the feeds obtained in Examples 1 to 4 and Reference Example 1 was administered once a day in a satiated amount of 1 to 2% of the body weight of the test fish, and the fish were kept for 34 days. The results are shown in Table 2. The test plots to which the feeds obtained in Examples 1 to 4 and Reference Example 1 were administered were designated as test plots 1 to 4 and control plots.

No dead fish were found in test plots 1 to 4 and control plots. However, there were significant differences in growth. That is, test plots 1 to 4 showed better growth than the control plot, and test plot 4 showed particularly good growth. In addition, in the control group, the body color became darker in the latter half of the test period, indicating that the animals' health was clearly impaired.
