Abstract

PURPOSE:To automatically adjust the brightness of a screen by detecting environmental light by means of a light detector and adjusting the quantity of light while adjusting a controller. CONSTITUTION:The function of a calibration curve indicating the relation between environmental light and the light intensity of back light giving to a liquid crystal display plate 2a is stored in a memory 6. In the next step, the light around the place on which this word processor is put is detected as light intensity by a light detector 3, and the light intensity signal which is output from the light detector 3 is converted into a digital signal by a controller 5. In the next step, the light intensity signal of the back light corresponding to this digital signal is extracted from the memory 6, and light intensity output is sent from the controller 5 to the back light 4. By this constitution, the liquid crystal display plate 2a can be adjusted to proper light, and the brightness of the screen can be made to automatically follow the variation of environmental light.

However, conventional display devices cannot automatically follow changes in ambient brightness, and the light intensity often becomes inappropriate without the user noticing. In particular, with the recent spread of laptop computers and the like, the environment in which they are used has often changed rapidly, and the frequency of adjustments has also increased, making the operation itself a burden on users.
