Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent the generation of unequal application in a curtain applying system by confining the contents of the org. solvents in coating liquids to <=5%. CONSTITUTION:The coating liquids 13 and 14 are run down and are applied on a web 10. Many additives, such as spectral sensitizing dyestuff, surfactants, and couplers, are added at need into photogaphic emulsions in the production of silver halide photographic sensitive materials. Some of these additives are hardly soluble in water and various org. solvents including alcohols, such as methanol and ethanol, are used. If, however, these org. solvents are used at a high ratio, the stability of the flowing down liquid film is drastically impaired in the curtain application and, therefore, the contents of the org. solvents in the coating liquids 13 and 14 are confined to <=5wt.%. The generation of the unequal application in the curtain application system is prevented in this way.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION [Industrial Field of Application] The present invention relates to a method of applying a coating liquid to a continuously running strip-shaped support (hereinafter referred to as a web), and more particularly to a curtain coating method.

There are various coating methods, such as the dipping method, double roll method, air doctor method, and slide bead method, but especially for photographic light-sensitive materials, many of them have a multilayer structure, including color light-sensitive materials. As a coating method, a slide bead method that allows multilayer coating is generally used. However, in bead coaters such as the slide bead method, the uniformity of the gap between the web and the coating device has a large effect on coating properties. Therefore, the web is generally conveyed in close contact with rigid rolls or the like to maintain bead gaps. Various improvements have been made to roughly increase the stability of the bead, and techniques such as providing a pressure difference (mainly downward pressure reduction) between the top and bottom of the bead have been developed. However, foreign matter attached to or embedded in the surface of the web opposite to the surface to be coated or on the surface of the packing roll narrows the bead gap when the web passes through the coating section, resulting in spot-like uneven coating. . Furthermore, there are many factors that can cause the bead to be disturbed, such as passage of the web through a seam, eccentricity of the web conveyance roll, and uneven driving of the conveyance motor. All of these causes uneven coating, which is a serious defect in the bead coating method.

On the other hand, a coating method using a free-falling curtain method is also well known as a coating method that has a wide gap, does not require strict gap control like the slide bead method, and allows simultaneous multilayer coating. That is, it is a method of coating by making a coating liquid into a thin film and colliding it with the web at a constant speed or higher. The technology has been disclosed.

However, even when such a curtain coating method is used in the case of photographic light-sensitive materials, uneven coating may still occur, which is a problem.

In FIG. 1, the coating liquids 13 and 14 flowing down the slide surface 5 of the coating machine are applied onto the web 10 via the bead 12. In this case, the stability of the gap between the coater lip 6 and the web, that is, the bead gap, becomes a problem.

The slide hopper coater shown in FIG. 2 has the same mechanism as the slide hopper coater shown in FIG. 1, and is characterized in that it does not create a bead, but instead lets the coating liquid flow down onto the web. Note that the numbers in the figure are the same as in FIG. 1.

In the production of silver halide photographic materials, a large number of additives such as spectral sensitizing dyes, surfactants, couplers, etc. are added to the photographic emulsion as necessary, but some of these additives are poorly soluble in water. Various organic solvents are used, including alcohols such as methanol and ethanol. However, as a result of intensive studies, the present inventors have discovered that the use of large amounts of these organic solvents significantly impairs the stability of the falling liquid film in curtain coating. It has been shown that this problem can be solved by doing this.
