Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a mugwort extract improved in hue without impairing drug effects by extracting leaves and branch tips of the mugwort with hot water and ultrafiltering the resultant liquid. CONSTITUTION:Leaves and branch tips of mugwort are heat-treated with water in a volume of 5-60l, especially 15-30l based on 1kg mugwort at 90-100 deg.C for 15-30min and the resultant extract is filtered to provide a filtrate, which is then refrigerated for several days. Formed precipitates are removed by filtration, etc., and treated by ultrafiltration to remove a fraction having >=5000, especially >=10000 molecular weight. The color of the obtained extract turns extremely lighter than that of the liquid before the treatment and gauze or clothes are hardly fouled. The aforementioned extract is capable of exhibiting remarkable effects on skin pruritus, especially pruritus of patients suffering from chronic renal failure.
