In many cases, the aim is to improve visibility. In such display devices, sufficient current is supplied to the display light-emitting elements to maintain a brightness that is readable even during the day, so when used outdoors at night, the surroundings are often dark and the display is often too bright.
In addition, as for power consumption, as the light emitting elements for liquid crystal lighting are used at night as described above, the internal temperature of the instrument rises, which has an adverse effect on reliability.

is the control means for this switch. 6 is a switch means for controlling the lighting of the light emitting element for illumination, and 7 is a changeover switch means interlocked with this, the switching pieces of both switch means are commonly connected to the power supply V, and one output terminal 7 a of the switch means 7 . is connected to the anode of the display light emitting element via a resistor R1 , and the other terminal 7b is connected to one terminal 6a via a resistor R1. The output terminal of the switch means 6 is connected to the anode of the illumination light emitting element 2 via a resistor R3 .

On the other hand, the light emitting element 2 for illumination is in an off state. When using at night, switch means 6

A current limited by is supplied to emit light, illuminating the liquid crystal display means 3, and the display light emitting element connected to the switching piece 7b side of the switch means 7 (R 1 +
Since the light is emitted under the current limitation by the resistor R 2 ), the brightness is lower than during the daytime. The value of the resistor R 2 is appropriately selected and determined so that it does not cause glare even at night.

Elements that are the same as those in FIG. 1 are given the same reference numerals and their explanations will be omitted. 8 is an open collector NAND gate, and the cathode of the display light emitting element 1 is connected to its output.
Its inputs are the status signal from the control means 5 and the output of the NAND gate 9. The inputs of the NAND gate 9 are the output of the switch 6 and the output of the NAND gate 10. The input of the NAND gate 10 is shown in FIG. 3A,
Three types of clock signals CLK1, shown in B and C
CLK2 and CLK3. CLK2 is 1/2 CLK1
CLK3 is a signal obtained by dividing CLK2 into 1/2. Therefore, since the output of the NAND gate 10 is at L level while all the signals are at H level, a signal such as D is obtained. This is a signal with a duty of 1/8.

NAND gate 9 maintains the H level while switch 6 is off, regardless of changes in the output of NAND gate 10. When the switch means 6 is turned on,
As in FIG. 1, a current flows through the illumination light emitting element 2 to turn it on, and one input of the NAND gate 9 becomes H level. In this state, NAND gate 10
During period 9 when the output of 9 is at H level, the output of 9 becomes L level, so the output of 9 has the waveform shown in FIG. 3E. Since the NAND gate 8 becomes active only when the output of the control means 5 is at the H level, when the output of the control means 5 is at the H level, it becomes the L level only during the duty 1/8 period, as shown in F, and is displayed only during this period. A current is supplied to the light emitting element 1 for use. That is, the average current to the display light emitting element 1 is 1/8 of that when the switch 6 is off, and the brightness is reduced.
