Abstract

PURPOSE:To commutate the wind received by a sail and utilize it effectively as driving force by forming plastic battens integrally of base parts and commutating parts orthogonal to the base parts and disposing these battens horizontally and mutually parallel to the sail, clamping the sail from both faces thereof. CONSTITUTION:Battens 4 are integrally formed of plastic base parts 41 provided along the face of a sail 1 and plastic commutating parts 42 orthogonal to the base parts 41, and disposed mutually in parallel in the horizontal direction to the sail 1. The battens 4 are disposed clamping the sail 1 from both faces thereof, and the base parts 41 of both battens 4 are mutually jointed by fasteners 43 to be fixed at the sail 1. The batten 4 functions to keep the sail 1 in shape by its own rigidity as well as possesses such flexibility as to curve the sail 1 at the time of receiving the wind. The wind is guided horizontally by the action of the commutating part 42 of the batten 4 and utilized effectively as the driving force of a yacht. A cutout part 44 of the specified pitch can be also formed at the commutating part 42 in order to further demonstrate its flexibility.

Conventionally, in order to adjust the shape of a sail, elongated pockets are formed in the sail in a transverse direction parallel to each other, into which battens made of strip-like thin plates are inserted. These battens may be placed only near the leech (%ledge) of the sail, or they may be placed across the entire width of the sail (%l).
In either case, the shape of the sail is adjusted so that the sail receives the wind efficiently and contributes to the propulsion of the yacht.

The above configuration has the drawback that it takes time and effort to form a batten pocket in the sail and to insert the batten into the pocket. In addition, it is preferable for the wind received by the sail to flow horizontally along the sail in order to increase the effectiveness of the sail, but in reality, as shown in Figure 7, where the wind flows with arrows, Then the wind deviates upwards,
At the bottom, the wind deflected downward, making it impossible to utilize the wind efficiently.

This invention was made to solve such conventional problems, and it has the original function of a batten to adjust the shape of the sail, as well as rectifying the wind that the sail receives and efficiently using it for propulsion. The purpose is to provide a similar sail structure.

In this invention, a batten is attached to a sail of a yacht almost horizontally and almost parallel to each other, and the batten has a base part along the surface of the sail and a rectifier part substantially perpendicular to the base part, which are integrally formed of plastic. The battens are arranged to sandwich the sail from both sides of the sail, and the battens are fixed to the sail by connecting the closing plate portions of both battens to each other.

As shown in the figure, a base plate 41 along the surface of the sail 1 and a rectifier 42 substantially orthogonal to the base plate 41 are integrally formed of plastic, and this batten 4 covers the sail 1 from both sides. The battens 4 are fixed to the sail 1 by sandwiching the battens 4 and connecting the base portions 41 of both battens 4 to each other with fasteners 43.

The batten 4 functions to maintain the shape of the sail 1 with its own rigidity, and is also required to have flexibility to allow the sail 1 to curve when exposed to wind. In order to exhibit this flexibility, cutouts 44 may be formed in the rectifying section 42 at a predetermined pitch as shown in FIG. 4. In this way, as shown in FIG. 5, the sail can be bent into a shape corresponding to the shape of the sail when it is exposed to the wind. Normally, the front side of the sail 1 curves with a large curvature as shown in the figure when exposed to the wind, so the pitch of the cutout portions 44 may be set to be smaller on the front side. Alternatively, the wall thickness of the rectifying section 42 may be changed so that the front side is easily curved.

Further, in order to prevent air from leaking through the notch 44, the notch 44 may be filled with a highly elastic material, or a tape may be applied around the notch 44 to cover the notch 44.

FIG. 6 shows another example of the shape of the batten 4.
A spherical head 45 is provided on the top of the rectifying section 42, an umbrella-shaped head 46 is provided on the top of the rectifying section 42, or a rectifying section 47
For example, the tip side may be formed with a thick wall.
In all of these, the head of the rectifying section 42 is formed to be large, so that the effect of guiding the wind is better exhibited. Further, the rectifying portion 48 may be formed to have a thinner wall on the tip side so that the batten can be easily bent, and these may be selected as necessary.

In the above configuration, the wind received by the sail 1 does not deviate in the vertical direction as shown by arrow B in the upper and lower parts of FIG. This allows the wind to be used more efficiently as a propulsion force for the yacht.

The pitch for attaching batten 4 to sail 1 is batten 4.
The batten 4 is determined depending on its shape and other conditions, but since the batten 4 is attached to the sail 1 by being clamped from both sides, it is easy to install it at any position and at any pitch.

Note that when the yacht sails upwind, the sail is tilted laterally due to wind pressure, and the horizontal direction of the wind and the direction of the batten 4 are accordingly different. Therefore, the installation direction of the batten 4 may take into account the angle of inclination of the sail, and the batten may be attached to the sail at an angle so that the batten will be in a horizontal state when the sail 4 is inclined to a certain extent.

As explained above, in this invention, since the batten having the rectifying part is arranged on the sail, the rectifying part of the batten can guide the wind hitting the sail in the horizontal direction, thereby effectively converting the wind into a propulsive force. It can be used for. Furthermore, since this batten can be attached to any position without providing a pocket in the sail, the pitch of the batten can be optimally selected depending on how the sail will be used.
