A projection lens that projects the beam onto the barcode reading range with the aim of expanding the reading range by rotating the focal point and changing the narrowest point of the beam, and this projection lens. A variable focus position device is provided with a rotatable focal position variable device in which a transparent plate thickness and/or a plurality of plates with different refractive indexes n are arranged in front of the beam, and the focus position variable device is rotated to adjust the beam to the narrowest position. The configuration is such that the apparent distance between the projection lens and the projection lens is varied to expand the reading range projected by the projection lens.

Prior art and problems to be solved by the invention] Conventionally, a beam emitted from a laser light source is scanned by a polygon mirror, and the scanning beam is emitted onto a bar code attached to a product, etc., and the reflected light is used to generate electricity. There is a barcode reader that converts the barcode into a signal and reads the barcode. In this barcode reader, the beam diameter of the scanning beam is made narrowest at a convenient position for reading a barcode attached to a product using a projection lens. At this time, the focal length of the projection lens is fixed, and the beam diameter of the scanning beam can only be narrowed to one preset position.
Barcodes can only be read within a predetermined range (reading range) centered around the narrow beam diameter.For this reason, if the product cannot be carried within the reading range due to its shape, size, weight, etc. There was a problem that the barcode could not be read.

By changing the thickness t of the scanning beam, the most narrowed position of the scanning beam can be moved to successive positions as shown in the waist position 8 in FIG. Furthermore, in the above example, the thickness t of the plate 4-1 was changed while keeping the refractive index constant;
A transparent plate 4 whose thickness and/or refractive index n may be changed or both may be changed.
-1 is placed on the outer periphery of the disc as shown in the focal position I variable device 4 in Figure 1, and by rotating it, the position where the scanning beam is most converged is changed as shown at the waist position in the diagram, making it possible to read barcodes. This makes it possible to expand the range.
