Abstract

PURPOSE:To secure such a plastic knee protector that is light in weight and high in rigidity by solidly molding thermosetting resin with a core so as to cover the core via a fiber clothlike reinforcing material installed on a surface of the core consisting of a low density foaming body. CONSTITUTION:At an instrument panel C of an automobile, two knee protectors A and B constituting a part of the lower surface are set up as corresponding to a driver's seat and the assistant driver's seat, respectively. In this case, each of these knee protectors A and B is constituted of a core 1 consisting of a low density foaming body, a fiber clothlike reinforcing material 2 being installed on a surface of the core 1, and thermosetting resin 3 solidly molded with the core 1 upon covering the core 1 via this reinforcing material 2. Plural pieces of through holes 4 are formed in a proper spot of the core 1, and the thermosetting resin is fitted up in each through hole 4, thereby forming plural pieces of ribs 5. In addition a mounting boss 6 consisting of soft resin is embedded in the back of these knee protectors A and B.

(Problems to be Solved by the Invention) However, the above-mentioned conventional resin knee protector has the drawback of being quite heavy due to its structure, and in order to reduce the weight of the vehicle body, it is necessary to ensure sufficient rigidity. At the same time, there is a desire to reduce the weight of the knee protector as much as possible.

On the other hand, in order to increase the rigidity of resin products for fishing boats, it is known that a fiber cloth-like reinforcing material is provided, as disclosed in, for example, Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 60-48315. However, in a resin knee protector, if the fiber cloth-like reinforcing material is simply provided without increasing the thickness of the resin material, sufficient rigidity as a knee protector cannot be ensured.

(Function) With the above configuration, in the resin knee protector of the present invention, the thermosetting resin is provided to cover the core material, and the thickness of the core material becomes thicker in the thickness direction when viewed in cross section. ,
Its section modulus is quite high. Therefore, together with the reinforcing effect of the fibrous cloth-like reinforcing material interposed between the thermosetting resin and the core material, sufficient rigidity as a knee protector is ensured. Moreover, since the core material is a low-density foam that is light in weight, the addition of the core material hardly increases the weight of the knee protector, and the weight of the knee protector can be reduced.

Furthermore, in the method for manufacturing a resin knee protector of the present invention, when injecting and filling the thermosetting resin around the core material in the mold, the fiber cloth-like reinforcing material is pasted on the surface of the core material in advance. This fibrous cloth-like reinforcing material will not be biased on the surface of the core material by the resin. Therefore, the fiber cloth-like reinforcing material is interposed between the core material and the resin in a predetermined manner, and its reinforcing effect can be effectively exhibited.

And the resin knee protector manufactured in this way
In A, the thermosetting resin 3 is provided to cover the core material 1 and is curved in the thickness direction by the thickness of the core material 1, so its section modulus is quite high. Therefore, together with the reinforcing effect of the fiber cloth-like reinforcing material 2 interposed between the thermosetting resin 3 and the core material 1, the knee protector
Sufficient rigidity is ensured. Moreover, the fiber cloth-like reinforcing material 2 is prevented from being biased on the surface of the core material 1 when resin is injected into the resin mold, so that the reinforcing effect can be maintained as specified. The rigidity of the knee protector A can be improved reliably.
