The reason for using
6A and 6B are top and side views of the image generating unit while light is being transmitted. FIG. 6A shows illumination light Li and image light Lp, and FIG. 6B shows red image light Lpr, green image light Lpg, blue image light Lpb, and the combination of these, image light Lp, i.e., ON light.
As shown in Figures 6A and 6B, when the projection-type
In the case of the first embodiment, in particular, the portion (cross-hatched portion) of the
Figure 7A is a side view of the image generating unit when thermal deformation of the prism occurs. Figure 7B is a top view of the image generating unit when thermal deformation of the prism occurs.
As shown in FIG. 7A, when a portion (cross-hatched portion) of the
Also, as shown in FIG. 7B, when the portion (cross-hatched portion) of the
To prevent deterioration in the quality of projected images caused by such large localized thermal deformation of the prism, the inventors considered reducing the temperature difference due to different parts of the prism, i.e., the temperature gradient within the prism. In particular, they considered keeping the entire prism at a uniformly high temperature.
Figure 8 is a diagram to explain the principle of suppressing thermal deformation that causes quality degradation of the projected image.
As shown in Figure 8, the principle of suppressing thermal deformation that causes deterioration in the quality of a projected image is explained using a simple optical system model in which there are two
As shown in the center diagram in FIG. 8, when light L is incident on
As shown in the right diagram of Figure 8, therefore, the portions other than the portion where light L passes and is in a high temperature state, i.e., both ends of the
In the case of the
The
Furthermore, a
As shown in Figures 4 and 5, in the
As shown in Figures 4 and 5, the
For example, the temperature inside the prism through which the light passes cannot be measured directly, but can be estimated based on the intensity of the illumination light Li from the lighting device 12 (i.e., the output level of the
The correspondence between the temperature inside the prism through which the light passes and the temperature of the prism surface to which the
It is also possible to estimate the temperature inside the prism through which the light passes based on at least one of the intensity of the illumination light Li of the

The projection type image display device according to the second embodiment has a different configuration from the projection type
Figure 9 is a schematic diagram of the configuration of a projection-type image display device according to
As shown in FIG. 9, the projection type
In the second embodiment, the

Light that passes through
In this second embodiment, the
In the second embodiment, the internal
The
The
反射型画像素子242は、DMD(デジタルミラーデバイス)である。
The
The reflected light from the
As with the first embodiment described above, this second embodiment also includes a heater to keep the prism warm.
Figure 10 is a perspective view of a total internal reflection prism.
As shown in FIG. 10, the
The
Although not shown in FIG. 10, a temperature sensor for detecting the prism surface temperature may be provided in the internal
As with the above-described first embodiment, this second embodiment can also suppress deterioration of image quality due to thermal deformation of a prism in a projection-type image display device that projects an image through a prism.
Although the above describes the first and second embodiments, the embodiments of the present disclosure are not limited to the above embodiments.
For example, in the above-mentioned first and second embodiments, the heat-retaining device that keeps the entire prism at a uniformly high temperature is a heater, but the embodiments of the present disclosure are not limited to this. The heat-retaining device may be a thermal insulator. In the case of a thermal insulator, heat generated in the part of the prism through which light passes spreads throughout the entire prism, and the thermal insulator limits heat dissipation to the outside of the prism, so that the entire prism is kept at a uniformly high temperature. As a result, the disappearance of air gaps and deformation of the reflective surface due to large localized thermal deformation of the prism are suppressed. Note that heating by a heater and insulation by a thermal insulator may be used in combination.
For example, in the case of the above-mentioned
Note that the embodiments of the present disclosure do not deny the possibility of a fan blowing air toward a prism. The fan serves to send hot air around the prism to the outside of the projection-type image display device and to cool the reflective image element near the prism.
In other words, in a broad sense, an embodiment of the present disclosure is a projection type image display device having a light source, a reflective imaging element that reflects illumination light from the light source as image light, a projection lens that projects the image light from the reflective imaging element, an internal total reflection prism that has an internal total reflection surface formed by an air gap, reflects illumination light from the light source toward the reflective imaging element by the internal total reflection surface, and transmits image light from the reflective imaging element through the internal total reflection surface and emits it to the projection lens, and a heat retention device that is provided in the internal total reflection prism and maintains heat so that the temperature inside the prism is uniform.
In addition, another embodiment of the present disclosure is, in a broad sense, a projection type image display device having a light source, first, second, and third reflective image elements that reflect illumination light from the light source as image light, a projection lens that projects image light from each of the first, second, and third reflective image elements, a decomposition/combination prism that decomposes the illumination light from the light source into multiple lights with different wavelengths and outputs them toward the first, second, and third reflective image elements, and combines and outputs the image light from each of the first, second, and third reflective image elements, an internal total reflection prism that has an internal total reflection surface formed by an air gap, reflects the illumination light from the light source toward the decomposition/combination prism by the internal total reflection surface, and transmits the combined image light output from the decomposition/combination prism through the internal total reflection surface and outputs it to the projection lens, and a heat retention device that keeps at least one of the decomposition/combination prism and the internal total reflection prism warm so that the temperature inside the prism is uniform.
