Description
アスファルト舗装は、鉱物骨材および液体化したアスファルト(ビチューメン)バインダーの混合物である複合材料を、頑丈な表面を形成するために硬化したものである。ビチューメンは、一般的に加熱により液体化する。アスファルト舗装は、溶剤と混合したビチューメン(カットバックとして知られる)あるいは水中に分散したビチューメン(アスファルト乳剤として知られる)を使用して製造することもできる。アスファルト舗装は、再生アスファルト舗装(RAP)、再利用アスファルトシングル(RAS)、粉砕タイヤゴム、および他の消費後廃棄材料を含む、再生もしくは再利用された材料を含むことができる。アスファルト舗装は、アスファルトバインダーの酸化、重荷重、水分による損傷、および変化する気候条件によって経時的に劣化し、その結果、疲労亀裂を生じ、次いで舗装全体の劣化がさらに加速する。
本開示は、アスファルト組成物中にステロールを使用する方法、および舗装の保全および維持のために、舗装の最表層部分の構築および表面処理に使用することができる方法に関する。開示したステロール含有アスファルトバインダーは、アスファルトを敷設する際に使用した元の未使用のバインダーもしくは未使用のアスファルトの元の特性の一部または全てを保存もしくは保持することによって、アスファルトの経年劣化の影響を抑制する、減少させる、あるいは克服することができる。

開示したステロール添加剤は、好ましくはアスファルトバインダーの経年劣化率を変更(例えば、低減または遅延)することが可能であり、または、経年劣化したバインダーを回復もしくは更新して、未使用のアスファルトバインダーの特性の一部もしくは全てを提供することができる。開示した組成物および方法は、植物由来の化学物質のクラス、すなわち化合物のステロールクラスを使用する。一方で植物ステロールは、アスファルテンと同数の縮合もしくは部分である不飽和環を含まないが、直鎖または分枝鎖分子ではないという利点を有する。例えば、植物ステロールは、物理的もしくは、アスファルトバインダーの剛性、有効温度範囲、および低温特性などの流動学的特性を変更あるいは改善することができる。

開示したステロール含有アスファルトバインダーは、当該技術分野で知られているように、任意の常温路上再生(CIR)処理に、用いることもできる。CIRは、熱を使用せずに、既存のアスファルト表面の一部の除去、再処理、および再舗装を含む。CIR処理は、例えば既存の材料の再使用、新しい材料の使用の最少化、材料輸送および運搬需要の低減、および材料の非加熱により費用を低減することから、経済的であり得る。CIRは、既存のアスファルト舗装の上部数インチの除去を含むことができる。CIRは、例えば、古い舗装を使用して新しい舗装層を形成する、亀裂、轍およびポットホールを除去する、および舗装表面を回復させるために用いることができる。いくつかの実施形態では、上部1インチ以上、上部6インチ以下を除去することができる。CIRのための除去は、一般的には、粉砕または研磨により行われる。粉砕は、望ましくは、粉砕機を使用するか、再生利用機と呼ばれる機械を使用して行われる。

Claims (6)
- アスファルトバインダー成分とステロール添加剤とを含むステロール含有アスファルトバインダー組成物であって、前記アスファルトバインダー成分に対して0.5~15重量%の前記ステロール添加剤を含むステロール含有アスファルトバインダー組成物を提供する工程;
前記ステロール含有アスファルトバインダー組成物と骨材とを混合して、アスファルト舗装材料を形成する工程;
既存のアスファルト舗装の一番上に前記アスファルト舗装材料を敷設する工程;および
敷設した前記アスファルト舗装材料を固めて、ステロールを含有するトップコート層を有する被覆されたアスファルト舗装を形成する工程;
を包含する、道路舗装方法。 - 前記ステロール添加剤は、純粋ステロールを含む、請求項1に記載の道路舗装方法。
- 前記ステロール添加剤は、粗ステロールを含む、請求項1に記載の道路舗装方法。
- 前記粗ステロールは、トール油ピッチを含む、請求項3に記載の道路舗装方法。
- 前記ステロール添加剤は、純粋ステロール対粗ステロールが10:90から90:10のステロール混合物を含む、請求項1に記載の道路舗装方法。
- 前記アスファルトバインダー成分は、再生アスファルト舗装(RAP)、再生アスファルトシングル(RAS)、または、RAPとRASとの両方の組み合わせを含む、請求項1に記載の道路舗装方法。
