Description
The present invention relates to an electrode and a battery including the electrode, and particularly to an electrode for a lithium ion secondary battery.
Lithium (Li) is an excellent material as an active material for a negative electrode for secondary batteries due to its electromotive force, but due to its high reactivity with oxygen and moisture, metallic lithium should not be used directly as an electrode. By using carbon intercalation compounds such as graphite or lithium alloys in negative electrodes, safety can be ensured at the manufacturing stage or the stage where they are incorporated into products.
However, when lithium is used as a negative electrode in the form of a carbon interlayer compound or a lithium alloy, the electromotive force of the battery decreases and the capacity of the battery decreases compared to when metallic lithium itself is used as the negative electrode. There's a problem. In addition, Li--Ag--Te negative electrodes, which are widely used as lithium alloys, have the problem that alloy components fall off from the electrodes during discharge, resulting in rapid deterioration due to repeated charging and discharging.
In order to solve this problem,
With the negative electrode having such a configuration, from the viewpoint of the material of the active material, it is possible to obtain a relatively large discharge capacity, which is a characteristic of a carbon negative electrode, and a high electromotive force, which is a characteristic of a Li or Li alloy negative electrode. In addition, from the viewpoint of the shape of the active material, the active material part (electrode layer) of the negative electrode is formed using a woven or nonwoven fabric made by processing the active material material into a fiber shape. It has been shown that the total area of the negative electrode becomes sufficiently large, the generation of Li dendrites is suppressed, and the discharge capacity of the negative electrode as a whole becomes large.
However, the negative electrode for a lithium secondary battery described in
In view of the above-mentioned problems, an object of the present invention is to provide an electrode suitable for a lithium ion secondary battery, which has a large capacity and is difficult to desorb an active material from the electrode even after repeated charging and discharging.
An electrode according to the present invention for solving the above problems has the configuration shown in (1) below.
(1) A fibrous support made of metal;
An electrode comprising: an active material held on the support.
According to the electrode according to the present invention, since the active material that intercalates and desorbs metal such as lithium is held by a fibrous support made of metal, the expansion of the electrode caused by intercalation and desorption of metal such as lithium is prevented. This can prevent the electrode itself from peeling off from the current collector and the active material from falling off.
Further, the electrode according to the present invention preferably has the following embodiments (2) to (10).
(2) The support is a felt-like mat or a paper product.
Felt-like mats and paper products have a form that has a large amount of space for holding the active material, so that the ability to hold the active material is increased and changes in the volume of the support are suppressed.
(3) The active material is bonded to the support with a binder.
If the active material is bonded to a fibrous support made of metal fibers via a binder, even if the active material expands due to intercalation and desorption of metal such as lithium, it will be wrapped in the binder and the fibrous support will By being bonded to it, it becomes difficult to fall off from the support.
(4) The electrode contains a conductive additive.
When the electrode contains the conductive additive, the flow of electricity between the active material and the fibrous support made of metal can be made smooth, so that the internal resistance within the electrode can be reduced.
(5) The active material contains silicon.
Silicon can be alloyed with alkali metals and alkaline earth metals to increase the capacity of the negative electrode while ensuring safety.
(6) The support is composed of one or more selected from copper, stainless steel, iron, and nickel.
These metals are difficult to alloy with lithium and can be suitably used as a fibrous metal support.
(7) The support has an average fiber length of 30 mm or more.
When the average fiber length is 30 mm or more, the number of ends of metal fibers in the entire support can be reduced. Metal fibers are electrically conductive and have sharp ends, which can cause short circuits in batteries, charge tends to concentrate, and metals related to charge and discharge tend to precipitate as dendrites. Since the number of batteries can be reduced, the reliability of the secondary battery can be improved. In addition, since the metal fibers are long, they tend to get entangled and are difficult to align in the plane direction, forming a felt-like mat, which has excellent retention of active materials.
(8) The electrode is used as an electrode of a lithium ion secondary battery.
When the electrode is used as an electrode of a lithium ion secondary battery, the active material of the electrode can be effectively utilized, and a large capacity negative electrode for lithium ion can be obtained.
(9) The electrode is a negative electrode of a lithium ion secondary battery.
When the electrode is used as a negative electrode of a lithium ion secondary battery, the active material of the electrode, which has a particularly large expansion and contraction, can be effectively utilized, and a large capacity negative electrode for lithium ions can be obtained.
(10) The electrode is an auxiliary electrode of a lithium ion secondary battery.
Auxiliary electrodes are used to compensate for the loss of metals involved in charging and discharging. The reduction in metal can be compensated for by flowing a current between the positive or negative electrode and the auxiliary electrode and introducing (doping) a predetermined amount of metal into the positive or negative electrode. When the electrode is used as an auxiliary electrode for a lithium ion secondary battery, the active material of the electrode can be effectively utilized, and a large capacity auxiliary electrode for a lithium ion secondary battery can be obtained.
Further, the battery according to the present invention has the configuration shown in (11) below.
(11) A battery comprising the electrode according to any one of (1) to (10) above.
A battery equipped with the electrode described in any one of (1) to (10) above has a large capacity and is highly reliable.
According to the electrode according to the present invention, since the active material that intercalates and desorbs metal such as lithium is held in a fibrous support made of metal, the support itself absorbs and desorbs metal such as lithium. Since the expansion of the electrode is suppressed, peeling of the electrode itself from the current collector and falling off of the active material can be prevented. Further, the battery according to the present invention has a large capacity and is highly reliable.
(Detailed description of the invention)
Hereinafter, the electrode and battery according to this embodiment will be explained in detail.
Non-aqueous secondary batteries that use alkali metals or alkaline earth metals, such as lithium-ion secondary batteries, have the characteristic that they can obtain a large electromotive force because the electrolyte is difficult to decompose. Therefore, safety can be improved by occluding metals involved in charging and discharging as interlayer compounds between the layers of crystals such as graphite, or by using metals that form alloys as active materials and alloying them. As a result, large capacity secondary batteries have been obtained.
However, when alkali metals or alkaline earth metals are occluded between the layers of graphite crystals, it is difficult to obtain a large capacity because the sites where these metals can be occluded within the graphite are limited. On the other hand, when forming an alloy with an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal, a large capacity can easily be obtained, but the volume change during alloying makes the active material brittle and easily falls off from the electrode.
Moreover, not only the active material for the negative electrode but also the active material for the positive electrode, such as a manganese-based oxide, tends to fall off from the electrode due to charging and discharging.
In contrast, in the electrode according to the embodiment of the present invention, as schematically shown in an enlarged view in FIG. It is configured to be held by the
The
Felt-like mats use long fibers with many fibers oriented in the thickness direction and have elasticity in the thickness direction, whereas paper products are obtained by making short fibers. There are almost no fibers oriented in the thickness direction, and the elasticity in the thickness direction is low.
In addition, since the secondary battery using the electrode according to the present embodiment uses a material (described in detail below) that undergoes a large volume change due to absorption and release of alkali metals or alkaline earth metals as the
The
The
Note that the type of binder is not particularly limited, and examples thereof include polyimide resin, polyamideimide resin, and the like. Among these, polyimide resin is preferred. Since polyimide resin has high strength, it can suppress expansion of the volume of the metal ion storage material.
Moreover, it is preferable that the electrode according to this embodiment contains a conductive additive in the
The type of conductive additive is not particularly limited, and examples thereof include carbon black, Ketjen black, acetylene black, furnace black, carbon nanotubes, and carbon nanofibers.
Moreover, it is preferable that the
The average particle diameter of the
The metal fiber used as the
It is preferable that the metal fiber has an average fiber length of 30 mm or more. In addition, since the metal fibers are long, they tend to get entangled and are difficult to align in the plane direction, forming a felt-like mat that has excellent retention of active materials. Moreover, it is more preferable that the metal fiber has an average fiber length of 100 mm or more.
The upper limit of the average fiber length is not particularly limited, but from the viewpoint of ease of production, it is preferably 10 m or less.
The average fiber length is calculated by loosening all the randomly extracted fibers and dividing the sum of the lengths of all fibers by the number of fibers.
In addition, there is no particular limit to the average fiber diameter (thickness) of the metal fibers, but if the metal fibers become too thick, the flexibility will decrease and the retention of the active material will deteriorate, so the average fiber diameter should be 0.1 to 100 μm. preferable.
The
The mass ratio of the
Subsequently, the
Here, in the case of the
Note that the
Known materials can be used for the current collector, but in the case of the negative electrode current collector, it is preferable to use a material that has excellent corrosion resistance and does not form an alloy with lithium, such as copper, nickel, etc. From the viewpoint of manufacturing cost, copper is preferable.
The
First, a mat-
For example, when producing a negative electrode, a solution containing 75% by mass of silicon as an active material, 20% by mass of polyimide as a binder, and 5% by mass of carbon black as a conductive agent is used. Note that an alcohol-based organic solvent is preferable as the solvent so that it can be easily dried. Then, as shown in FIGS. 2(a) to 2(c), the electrode layer and the current collector are integrated to obtain the
The
Further, the

Note that there are no restrictions on the type of electrolyte constituting the battery, and any known electrolyte may be used, and it may be a solid electrolyte or an electrolytic solution. Furthermore, there are no particular limitations on other battery elements such as separators.
