The present invention relates to a method for manufacturing an optical fiber preform and a method for manufacturing an optical fiber using the same, and more particularly to a method for manufacturing an optical fiber preform containing a rare earth element in the core and a method for manufacturing an optical fiber using the same. .
Optical fibers containing rare earth elements such as ytterbium (Yb) and erbium (Er) are widely used as optical signal amplifiers in fields such as fiber lasers. A vapor phase method is known as a method of manufacturing an optical fiber preform for forming such an optical fiber.
As a method of manufacturing a rare earth element-doped optical fiber preform by a vapor phase method, a manufacturing method described in
However, the method for manufacturing an optical fiber preform described in
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention has been made in view of the above circumstances, and provides a method for manufacturing an optical fiber preform and a method for manufacturing an optical fiber using the same, which can improve the yield even if the doping concentration of the rare earth element is increased. intended to provide
The inventor of the present invention conducted extensive research to find out the cause of the above problems. As a result, during the process of forming soot inside the quartz tube, heat is sometimes generated due to the rapid oxidation reaction inside the quartz tube. The inventor thought. Therefore, the inventors investigated the correlation between heat generation and bubbles in the optical fiber preform. As a result, when a rare earth element-containing gas containing a rare earth element is supplied at the time of soot formation, decomposition of the rare earth element-containing gas usually starts and progresses to become hydrocarbons, and eventually carbon is oxidized. At this time, if oxidation of carbon occurs, no heat is generated. However, the present inventor believes that if the supply amount of the rare earth element-containing gas is increased in order to increase the concentration of the rare earth element added, the carbon will not be completely oxidized and hydrocarbons will remain, and the hydrocarbons will cause heat generation. rice field. When heat is generated in this way, a rapid pressure fluctuation occurs in the quartz tube, which causes separation between the glass particles that make up the soot and separation between the soot and the inner surface of the quartz tube. The present inventor thought that it might remain as bubbles in the fiber preform. In addition, when heat is generated, the heat causes local pressure fluctuations in the quartz tube, causing backflow of the glass particles formed downstream of the quartz tube, and there are places in the soot where the glass particles are not in close contact with each other. The present inventors thought that the increase would make it easier for the glass particles to separate from each other, and that bubbles would tend to remain in the resulting optical fiber preform. As a result of further earnest research, the inventors of the present invention have found that the above problems can be solved by the following inventions.
That is, the present invention provides a method for manufacturing an optical fiber preform comprising a core portion containing a rare earth element and a clad portion surrounding the core portion, wherein the clad portion is formed of quartz. a hollow base material forming step of forming a hollow base material by forming a core layer containing the rare earth element on the inner surface of the tube, wherein the hollow base material forming step includes supplying a raw material gas for the glass particles in the quartz tube, and performing at least one step including a soot forming step of supplying the rare earth element-containing gas containing the rare earth element to form soot containing the glass particles, and an exhaust step of exhausting the inside of the quartz tube. forming the core layer on the inner surface of the quartz tube by a step of supplying an exhaust gas containing an inert gas into the quartz tube in the exhaust step.
According to the manufacturing method described above, in the hollow base material forming step, the core layer containing the rare earth element is formed on the inner surface of the quartz tube to form the hollow base material, and the core portion containing the rare earth element surrounds the core portion. An optical fiber preform having a cladding portion and a cladding portion is obtained. The hollow base material is formed by performing at least one step including a soot forming process and an exhaust process. At this time, when the rare earth element-containing gas is supplied into the quartz tube in the soot forming process, decomposition of the rare earth element-containing gas usually starts and progresses to become hydrocarbons, and eventually carbon is oxidized. At this time, if oxidation of carbon occurs, no heat is generated. However, if the supply amount of the rare earth element-containing gas is increased in order to increase the concentration of the rare earth element added, the carbon is not completely oxidized, and hydrocarbons remain, and the hydrocarbons are heated in the soot formation process to generate heat naturally. I have something to do. In contrast, according to the method for manufacturing an optical fiber preform of the present invention, even if the supply amount of the rare earth element-containing gas is large in the soot forming step, the inside of the quartz tube is exhausted containing the inert gas in the exhausting step. Since the quartz tube is exhausted by the exhaust gas, the remaining hydrocarbons in the quartz tube are exhausted, reducing the amount of hydrocarbons that can cause heat generation. Therefore, heat generation is suppressed in the quartz tube. When heat generation is suppressed in the quartz tube in this manner, separation between glass particles and separation between the quartz tube and soot are less likely to occur, and bubbles are less likely to remain in the resulting optical fiber preform. In addition, when heat generation is suppressed, local pressure fluctuations in the quartz tube that may be caused by heat generation are suppressed, and the phenomenon that glass particles formed downstream of the quartz tube flow back due to pressure fluctuations is less likely to occur. Therefore, the number of locations in the soot where the glass particles are not in close contact with each other is reduced, the separation of the glass particles is less likely to occur, and bubbles are less likely to remain in the resulting optical fiber preform. As described above, the method for manufacturing an optical fiber preform according to the present invention can reduce the number of defective preforms and improve the yield even when the doping concentration of the rare earth element is high.
The method for manufacturing the optical fiber preform may further include a collapsing step of collapsing the hollow preform.
In the method for manufacturing an optical fiber preform, it is preferable that the temperature inside the quartz tube in the evacuation step is lower than the temperature inside the quartz tube in the soot forming step.
In this case, since the temperature inside the quartz tube during the exhaust process is lower than the temperature inside the quartz tube during the soot forming process, even if hydrocarbons remain in the quartz tube during the exhaust process, the Fever is less likely to occur.
In the method for manufacturing an optical fiber preform, in the soot forming step, the rare earth element-containing gas is supplied into the quartz tube using a gas supply pipe, and in the exhaust step, the inside of the gas supply pipe is It is preferable to evacuate with an exhaust gas.
In this case, in the exhaust process, not only the inside of the quartz tube but also the inside of the gas supply pipe is evacuated by the exhaust gas, so that hydrocarbons caused by the rare earth element-containing gas in the gas supply pipe are also sufficiently exhausted. Therefore, heat generation due to hydrocarbons is less likely to occur in the quartz tube.
In the method for manufacturing an optical fiber preform, preferably, in the exhausting step, the volume content of the inert gas in the exhaust gas is decreased stepwise as the exhausting step progresses.
In this case, the manufacturing cost of the optical fiber preform can be reduced when using an inert gas, such as helium or argon, which is more expensive than oxygen.
In the method for manufacturing an optical fiber preform, the step in the hollow preform forming step further includes, after the exhausting step, a sintering step of sintering the glass particles of the soot to turn the soot into transparent glass. may contain.
In the method for manufacturing an optical fiber preform, the core further contains a dopant different from the rare earth element, and a dopant-containing gas containing the dopant is introduced into the quartz tube between the evacuation step and the sintering step. It is preferable to further include a diffusion step of supplying and diffusing into the soot.
In this case, unlike the case where the diffusion step is performed after the sintering step, the dopant addition efficiency in the diffusion step decreases as the sintering of the soot proceeds, and the dopant concentration in the core portion of the obtained optical fiber preform decreases. Insufficiency can be prevented.
It is preferable that the method for manufacturing an optical fiber preform further includes, between the evacuation step and the sintering step, a treatment step of supplying at least one of oxygen gas and chlorine atom-containing gas into the quartz tube.
In this case, by supplying at least one of the oxygen gas and the chlorine atom-containing gas into the quartz tube, the decomposition of the hydrocarbons caused by the rare earth element-containing gas is accelerated, and the hydrocarbons become carbon, thereby further suppressing heat generation. be done. In addition, by supplying at least one of the oxygen gas and the chlorine atom-containing gas into the quartz tube, even if transition metal impurities such as Fe 2+ are mixed when the rare earth element-containing gas is supplied into the quartz tube, the transition An optical fiber matrix that can shift the absorption wavelength band of transition metal impurities from the usable wavelength band of optical fibers by changing the valence of metal impurities through an oxidation reaction, thereby contributing to the reduction of loss in optical fibers. You can get wood.
The present invention also provides a preform preparing step for preparing an optical fiber preform manufactured by the method for producing an optical fiber preform described above, and drawing the optical fiber preform prepared in the preform preparing step. and a drawing step of obtaining an optical fiber.
According to this optical fiber manufacturing method, the yield of the optical fiber preform can be improved even if the doping concentration of the rare earth element is increased by the above-described optical fiber preform manufacturing method. Therefore, an optical fiber obtained by drawing an optical fiber preform can be manufactured efficiently at a low cost.
ADVANTAGE OF THE INVENTION According to this invention, the manufacturing method of the optical fiber preform which can improve a yield even if the doping density|concentration of a rare earth element becomes high, and the manufacturing method of an optical fiber using the same are provided.
<Manufacturing method of optical fiber preform>
Hereinafter, embodiments of the method for manufacturing an optical fiber preform according to the present invention will be described in detail.
First, an embodiment of the optical fiber preform of the present invention will be described with reference to FIG. FIG. 1 is an end view showing an example of an optical fiber preform manufactured by the method for manufacturing an optical fiber preform according to the present invention.
As shown in FIG. 1, an
Next, a method for manufacturing the
First, in order to manufacture the
At this time, the
First, as shown in FIG. 3, a
The
Next, as shown in FIG. 4, a raw material gas for glass particles is supplied from a glass particle raw
Next, as shown in FIG. 5, exhaust gas containing inert gas is supplied from the
Next, as shown in FIG. 6, the glass particles of the
Then, the
Finally, the
According to the manufacturing method described above, the
In the manufacturing method described above, in the soot forming step, the rare earth element-containing gas is supplied into the
Next, the hollow base material forming step and the collapse step will be described in detail.

The hollow base material forming step is a step of obtaining the

As the rare earth element-containing gas, for example, a vaporized β-diketone metal complex such as Re(DPM) 3 is used. Here, Re includes Yb, Nd, Er, and the like. DPM is C11H19O3 .
The supply amounts of the glass particle source gas and the rare earth element-containing gas can be adjusted by the temperature of the glass particle

Carrier gases include, for example, oxygen (O 2 ), helium (He) and argon (Ar). Further, it is preferable to preheat the carrier gas, such as Re(DPM) 3 , which is used together with the rare earth element-containing gas at a temperature higher than room temperature, upstream of the rare earth element-containing

The evacuation process is a process for evacuating the inside of the

Also, the exhaust process may be divided into a plurality of times. In this case, it is preferable to decrease the inert gas concentration stepwise as the exhaust process progresses. For example, it is preferable to decrease the inert gas concentration in stages such as 90% by volume in the first evacuation process, 70% by volume in the second evacuation process, and 50% by volume in the third evacuation process.

The steps including the soot forming step, the exhausting step and the sintering step further include a treatment step of supplying at least one of oxygen gas and chlorine atom-containing gas into the

At this time, the diffusion step may be performed during the soot forming step, after the exhausting step and before the sintering step, or during the sintering step. It is preferable to carry out before the binding process. In this case, unlike the case where the diffusion step is performed after the sintering step, the sintering of the
A part of the dopant diffusion process may be performed after the evacuation process and before the sintering process, and the remaining dopant diffusion process may be performed in the soot forming process or the sintering process. Dopants include, for example, Al, P, B, Yb and F. These can be used alone or in combination of two or more. When Al is used as the dopant, for example, AlCl3 is used as the dopant-containing gas, and when P is used as the dopant, for example, POCl3 is used as the dopant - containing gas, and B is used as the dopant. When used, BBr 3 or BCl 3 is used as the dopant-containing gas, and when Yb is used as the dopant, Yb(DPM) 3 is used as the dopant-containing gas. When F is used as the dopant-containing gas, SiF 4 , C 2 F 6 , CF 4 or the like is used.
It is preferable to heat the

The diffusion step may be performed before the treatment step or after the treatment step, but if the dopant to be added is likely to volatilize during the treatment step, the diffusion step is performed after the treatment step. is preferred. In this case, since the treatment process is not performed after the diffusion process, the elements added in the diffusion process are not desorbed during the treatment process. Examples of such dopants include P and B.
Also, the diffusion step is preferably performed before the treatment step when Yb(DPM) 3 is used as the dopant-containing gas. In this case, a small amount of residual organic matter derived from the Yb raw material remaining after the diffusion step and the evacuation step is treated by the treatment step of supplying oxygen gas, so that the
The diffusion step is also preferably performed before the treatment step, even when AlCl 3 is used as the dopant-containing gas. In this case, when Fe is released from a pipe or the like during the supply of AlCl 3 in the diffusion step, the valence of Fe is changed by the treatment step of supplying oxygen gas to render Fe harmless, or the treatment step using chlorine-containing gas is performed. By converting Fe into FeCl 3 and volatilizing and removing it, the

<Jacket process>
The solid base material obtained in the collapse step is covered with a quartz tube and collapsed by the jacket method to increase the diameter of the base material. In this case, the solid base material may be jacketed with a quartz tube and integrated with a lathe. If necessary, a stretching step for stretching the solid base material may be performed before the jacketing step. As a result, a large-diameter columnar base material is obtained in which the core-cladding ratio, which is the ratio (D2/D1) of the diameter (D1) of the core and the diameter (D2) of the cladding, has a desired value. . This core-to-cladding ratio may be different from the ratio (d1/d2) of the diameter of the core (d1) to the diameter of the clad (d2) in the optical fiber after drawing, taking into account the grinding process and polishing process described below. I do not care.
Further, a grinding process and a polishing process may be performed on the large-diameter base material after the jacket process.

Here, the drawing temperature (furnace temperature) is, for example, 2000 to 2200.degree. The drawing speed is, for example, 5 to 300 m/s. The manufactured optical fiber has, for example, a core diameter of 3 to 100 μm and a clad diameter (fiber diameter) of 80 to 1000 μm.

An optical fiber preform was produced in the same manner as in Example 1, except that the evacuation process was not performed.
Concentrations of Yb, Al and P were measured by elemental analysis for the optical fiber preforms of Example 1 and Comparative Example 1 obtained as described above. The concentration of P was measured while adding P in the diffusion process. Also, the obtained optical fiber preform was subjected to a visual inspection to confirm whether or not bubbles were mixed in the optical fiber preform. Then, the ratio of the number of defective base materials (numerator) due to bubbles to the number of manufactured optical fiber base materials (denominator) was calculated as a percentage for each concentration of Yb added to the core. Table 1 shows the results.
(Example 2)
An optical fiber preform was obtained in the same manner as in Example 1, except that the diffusion step was not performed.
(Example 3)
An optical fiber preform was obtained in the same manner as in Example 1, except that the following treatment process was performed after the evacuation process and before the diffusion process.
That is, first, the quartz tube was heated by an oxyhydrogen burner as a heating source while supplying oxygen into the quartz tube through the gas supply pipe. The temperature of the quartz tube was 1500° C., which is slightly lower than the temperature of the quartz tube in the soot forming process. The quartz tube was heated by reciprocating the burner several times. Thus, the processing steps were performed.
(Example 4)
An optical fiber preform was produced in the same manner as in Example 1 except that the diffusion step was not performed and the treatment step was performed after the evacuation step and before the sintering step. At this time, the treatment process was performed in the same manner as the treatment process of Example 3.
(Comparative example 2)
An optical fiber preform was produced in the same manner as in Example 3, except that the evacuation process was not performed.
Concentrations of Yb, Al and P were measured in the same manner as in Example 1 for the optical fiber preforms of Examples 2 to 4 and Comparative Example 2 obtained as described above. Table 2 shows the results. Table 2 shows the ratio of the number of defective base materials (numerators) due to bubbles for each Yb concentration in terms of the relatively high concentration among the Yb concentrations in Table 1, in percentage.
From the above, it was confirmed that according to the method of manufacturing the optical fiber preform of the present invention, the yield can be improved even if the doping concentration of the rare earth element is increased.
