Description
The present invention relates to a Faraday rotator and a magneto-optical device and an optical isolator using the Faraday rotator.
Examples of the Faraday rotator used in a magneto-optical device such as an optical isolator are those shown in Patent Document 1 and
In the case of a Faraday rotator using a solid material, it is necessary to process the material itself such as crystals in order to adjust the shape of the rotor. Therefore, there is a limit to the degree of freedom in adjusting the shape of the rotor.
An object of the present invention is to provide a Faraday rotator having a high degree of freedom in adjusting its shape, and a magneto-optical device and an optical isolator using the Faraday rotator.
The Faraday rotor of the present invention comprises a liquid having a Faraday effect on transmitted light and a liquid accommodating portion containing the liquid so that light incident from the outside passes through the liquid and is emitted to the outside. with which the liquid, with contains trihexyl tetradecyl phosphonium ions as cations, Ri ionic liquids der containing magnetic ions as an anion, wherein the magnetic ion includes a transition element.
According to the Faraday rotator of the present invention, a liquid is used as a material having a Faraday effect. Therefore, the shape of the rotor can be adjusted by adjusting the shape of the liquid storage portion that stores the liquid. Therefore, it is easy to adjust the shape of the Faraday rotator.
Further, the ionic liquid is generally non-volatile and has excellent heat resistance. Therefore, the durability of the Faraday rotator is improved.
In addition, the Faraday effect is likely to occur due to magnetic ions.
Also, the ions of the transition elements and rare earth elements, the Faraday effect is particularly likely to occur.
Further, the Faraday rotator according to the present invention can be applied to a magneto-optical device such as a magnetic field sensor, a current sensor, or an optical isolator, which utilizes the characteristic that optical rotation is generated by applying a magnetic field. By applying the present invention, which has a high degree of freedom in adjusting the shape of the Faraday rotator, to these devices, the degree of freedom in designing the device as a whole is improved. For example, when the Faraday rotator according to the present invention is used as an optical isolator, the degree of freedom in design as an optical isolator is improved.
これらは直線状の仮想軸C(以下、軸Cとする。)
The optical isolator 1 according to the embodiment of the present invention will be described with reference to FIGS. 1 and 2. As shown in FIG. 1, the optical isolator 1 includes a polarizer 4,
For example, a polarizing prism is used as the polarizer 4 and the analyzer 5. This polarizing prism allows only a specific linearly polarized light component of the light incident along the axis C to pass through. Hereinafter, the plane including the traveling direction of light and the electric field vector is defined as a plane of polarization, and the plane of linearly polarized light passing through the polarizer 4 is used as a reference plane. At this time, the detector 5 is formed on a surface in which the plane of linearly polarized light passing through the detector 5 is rotated about the axis C by a predetermined angle (hereinafter referred to as an inter-filter angle) in a predetermined direction from the reference plane. They are arranged so as to be parallel. The angle between filters is, for example, π / 4 radians. That is, the detector 5 passes linearly polarized light having a polarization plane rotated clockwise or counterclockwise by the angle between the filters from the reference plane when viewed from the left side of FIG.
The
As shown in FIG. 1, the Faraday
As shown in FIG. 2, the Faraday
The
The ionic liquid is generally a salt having a low melting point (for example, 100 ° C. or lower), and in the present embodiment, a liquid that is liquid at room temperature is used. Further, the ionic liquid is generally non-volatile and has excellent heat resistance. Some ionic liquids, such as the above-mentioned 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrachloroiron (III) acid, exhibit paramagnetism by containing magnetic ions. The magnetic ions contained in the ionic liquid used as the
When the
Hereinafter, the function of the optical isolator 1 will be described. The light incident on the optical isolator 1 along the arrow I in FIG. 1 is linearly polarized with the reference plane as the polarization plane by the polarizer 4. The light from the polarizer 4 passes through the
On the other hand, when light is incident from the right side of FIG. 1 along the direction opposite to the arrow E, the optical isolator 1 functions as follows. As an example, first, it is assumed that the analyzer 5 passes linearly polarized light having a polarization plane rotated counterclockwise from the reference plane by an angle between filters when viewed from the left side of FIG. This light passes through the
[Example 1]
The first embodiment, which is one embodiment according to the above-described embodiment, will be described. FIG. 3 is a conceptual diagram of an

As Example 1, the Faraday rotation angle by the

As Example 2, the ionic liquid used for the liquid 12 was changed to a different one from that of Example 1, and the same experiment as in Example 1 was carried out. The ionic liquid used was tetrachloroiron (Tetrachloroiron (III), which consists of 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium ion, which is a cation represented by the following

On the other hand, when 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride obtained by converting anions into chloride ions was used as the liquid 12 and the Faraday rotation angle by the
As shown in the above experiments, the Verde constant of the ionic liquid containing iron ions was about 3 to 7 times larger in absolute value than the Verde constant of the ionic liquid containing no iron ions. From this, it can be seen that the inclusion of magnetic ions such as iron ions in the ionic liquid contributes to the improvement of the Faraday effect.

[Example 6]
As Example 6, the ionic liquid used for the liquid 12 was changed to a different one from Example 1, and the same experiment as in Example 1 was carried out. Ionic liquids used are tri hexyl tetradecyl phosphonium ion is a cation represented by the above chemical formula 4 ([PR 4] +) and an anion [GdCl 6] ionic liquids [PR 4] consisting of 3- and 3 [ GdCl 6 ]. The Faraday rotation angle was measured using the
Next, the Verde constant was obtained in the same manner using chlorotrihexyl tetradecylphosphonium [PR 4 ] Cl in which the anion [GdCl 6 ] 3- was converted into a chloride ion as the liquid 12, and the results were as follows. .. Since the absorption of this ionic liquid is almost zero, the figure of merit could not be calculated. Thus, Verdet constant of the ionic liquid was changed to chloride ions the ion containing Gd 3+ became comparable to the ionic liquid comprising Gd 3+.
In the
Further, as the liquid 12 of the

The above is a description of a preferred embodiment of the present invention, but the present invention is not limited to the above-described embodiment, and various changes can be made as long as it is described in the means for solving the problem. It is possible.
Instead of the
