Description
The present invention relates to a technique for suppressing carrier light when modulating carrier light to generate sideband light.
This application claims priority based on Japanese Patent Application No. 2011-217794 for which it applied to Japan on September 30, 2011, and uses the content here.
2. Description of the Related Art In an optical communication system in which a signal is placed on light and transmitted through an optical fiber, an optical intensity modulator that generates an optical signal by intensity-modulating laser light emitted from a light source is used. The light intensity modulator is obtained by forming a Mach-Zehnder type optical waveguide, a modulation electrode, a bias electrode, and the like on a substrate of an electro-optic crystal such as lithium niobate (LiNbO 3 ; hereinafter abbreviated as LN).
A Mach-Zehnder type optical waveguide has a waveguide configuration that includes a branching unit that branches input light, two arms that propagate the branched light, and a multiplexing unit that recombines the light propagated through the arms. doing. In this multiplexing part, when the two lights to be combined are in phase, the light waves are intensified and output to each other, and in the opposite phase, the light waves cancel each other and output light is eliminated. It becomes a state. The ratio between the output light intensity in the on state and the output light intensity in the off state is called an extinction ratio and is an important index representing the performance of the light intensity modulator. The higher the extinction ratio, that is, the greater the difference in the output light intensity between the on state and the off state, the deeper the modulation depth, and the higher the quality of optical transmission.
Here, most ideally, the output in the OFF state is zero, and at this time, the extinction ratio is infinite. In order to create this situation, the intensities of the two lights that meet must match exactly. However, since the branching ratios of the branching portions are usually not equal due to an optical waveguide manufacturing error or the like, and the propagation loss differs between the two arms, the intensity of the two combined lights is asymmetric. In this case, even if the phase is reversed, the two lights are not completely canceled out, and the extinction ratio is deteriorated.
As a method of improving the extinction ratio by making the light intensities of the two lights in the multiplexing part symmetric, for example, by irradiating the excimer laser on the arm with the larger branching power, giving a defect to the waveguide and increasing the loss, A method of balancing the intensity of light that has passed through the other arm with the intensity is conceivable. However, this method has a problem because the loss due to defects has wavelength dependency and the extinction ratio also depends on the wavelength.
By the way, in a so-called nested modulator (SSB modulator) in which a sub Mach-Zehnder optical waveguide is provided on each of the two arms of the main Mach-Zehnder optical waveguide, RF modulation is performed on each sub-Mach-Zehnder optical waveguide, and the frequency is shifted to the upper and lower sides. Generates band light (upper and lower sidebands) and selects the phase corresponding to the data signal in the main Mach-Zehnder optical waveguide, thereby switching the sideband light between the upper and lower sides and frequency-modulated signal light An optical FSK (Frequency Shift Keying) modulator has been developed (see, for example, Patent Document 1). In recent years, there has been proposed a light intensity modulator that realizes a high extinction ratio by using the sub Mach-Zehnder optical waveguide as a light amount adjusting unit and operating the above-described optical FSK modulator as the above-described light intensity modulator. (For example, refer nonpatent literature 1).
The light intensity modulator disclosed in Non-Patent
Therefore,

Hereinafter, embodiments of the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the drawings.
(First embodiment)
FIG. 1 is a diagram showing a configuration of a carrier-suppressed
In the figure, light (carrier light) having a frequency f 0 that is input light to the carrier-suppressed
f +1 = f 0 + f m
f -1 = f is 0 -f m. Incidentally, when performing modulation at the frequency f m, is also generated additional high-order component f 0 ± 2f m and f 0 ± 3f m, where for simplicity of explanation, it is assumed to ignore these.
The output light from the
The
Note that the phase modulator may perform modulation at a high voltage of Vπ or higher in order to reduce the influence on the interference signal amplitude due to drift or the like. In this case, it is desirable that the modulation frequency f k is set to 1/6 or less of the modulation frequency fm of the
For example, if the modulation frequency f k of the
The
Here, the
Therefore, the multiplexing

Next, the
In the figure, an
Although not shown, the
Here, when the voltage applied to the
Further, when the voltage applied to the
When imparting a phase difference π is the
Therefore, the carrier suppressed
The specific procedure of control consists of the following three steps. In each of the following steps, a modulation signal is always applied to the
First, the voltage applied to the three
Next, in the above state, the voltage applied to the
Finally, the applied voltage of the
As for the branching ratio of the first branching
In addition, after performing control by said 1st-3rd step, the phase state of the output light of each Mach-Zehnder optical waveguide may change with time, for example by the change of environmental temperature etc., for example. In order to correct this variation, the control of the second and third steps is executed constantly or repeatedly at regular intervals, so that high-precision optical modulation can be realized in real time.
(Second Embodiment)
FIG. 4 is a diagram showing the configuration of the carrier
In the figure, light (carrier light) having a frequency f 0 that is input light to the carrier-suppressed
The output light from the
The
The
Here, the
An electrical signal corresponding to the input light intensity is output from the light detection means 14 and branched into two. Each of the two branched electrical signals is input to the
Here, the extraction of the f 0_IM component by the f 0_IM filter 18b will be described in more detail. Prior to the electrical signal input from the light detection means 14 to the f 0_IM filter 18b, the
The components of the interference signal of the carrier light f 0 include not only the component of the modulation frequency f k that is the fundamental wave for driving the
As described above, as countermeasures against harmonic components of f k , when dealing with environmental changes and disturbances, or performing control optimization of the
When the
Selecting a filter that passes a harmonic component as the f 0_IM extraction filter 18b eliminates the need for selecting a condition for improving resistance to fluctuations in the optical path difference due to environmental changes and disturbances and driving conditions of the
In addition, as the branching
The control means 17 generates a control signal based on the electrical signals output from the
The modulation operation of the
The configuration in the second embodiment can reduce the number of branching
In addition
(Third embodiment)
FIG. 5 is a diagram showing the configuration of the carrier
In this embodiment, instead of the multiplexing means 13 in the configuration of the second embodiment, a multiplexing / demultiplexing means 13A that outputs two output lights with a constant branching ratio after multiplexing the two input lights is employed. The two output lights are received by a differential detection means 19 such as a differential PD.
The configuration until the input light to the carrier-suppressed
The
In the first light detection means 19a, the branched light M1 from the multiplexing / demultiplexing means 13a is received, and an electrical signal corresponding to the received light power is branched into two and output to the adding means 19c and the subtracting means 19d, respectively. The In the second light detection means 19b, the input light M2 from the multiplexing / demultiplexing means 13a is received, and an electric signal corresponding to the received light power is branched into two and output to the adding means 19c and the subtracting means 18d, respectively. The
In the adding means 19 c, the electrical signals from the first light detecting means 19 a and the second
The multiplexing / demultiplexing means 13a is, for example, a fiber type optical coupler having a fixed branching ratio. The first and second light detection means 19a and 19b are configured by photodiodes (PD) that convert the power (intensity) of received light into electrical signals.
The
The modulation operation of the
In the configuration according to the third embodiment, since necessary signal components can be input to the control means 17 without preparing a special filter, the configuration can be simplified and the cost can be reduced.
As in the second embodiment, an average value filter that transmits the power average value and an f 0_IM extraction filter that transmits the amplitude component f 0_IM of the time waveform are provided between the differential light detection means 19 and the control means 17. May be arranged. In this case, the S / N can be improved and the control accuracy can be improved.
As described above, the embodiments of the present invention have been described in detail with reference to the drawings. However, the specific configuration is not limited to the above-described one, and various design changes and the like can be made without departing from the scope of the present invention. It is possible to
For example, the present invention can be applied to a case where the waveguide configuration of the optical modulator is a single type Mach-Zehnder optical waveguide. The single-type Mach-Zehnder optical waveguide has a configuration in which the first sub-Mach-Zehnder
According to the present invention, when generating sideband light by modulating carrier light, it is possible to stably suppress the carrier light with a simple and low-cost configuration. Conventionally, the lower limit of the wavelength difference between the carrier light and the modulated sideband light has been sharply limited in the bandwidth and wavelength characteristics of the optical filter, but in the case of this method, it is extended to the line width of the carrier light. it can. As described above, the present invention can be used for a carrier-suppressed light generator and is extremely useful industrially.
