以上に論述されているとおり、本発明に従うセンサは、周囲温度、加えられる歪み(これは、周囲の圧力の転換に相当することがあり得る)、および気体の拡散のような特定の物理量の変化に応答してシフトする、それぞれの波長を有する複数のセンサ回折格子を備える。入力光は、複数のセンサ回折格子に入射され、その結果、出力光すなわち複数の回折格子からの反射光に複数のセンサ回折格子のそれぞれの波長データが含まれる。具体的には、センサ出力はそれぞれのセンサ回折格子の波長シフトのデータを得るのに利用できる。
(1) 周囲温度T、

Δλ1、Δλ2、Δλ3、Δλ4は、生成したデータ、つまり各回折格子1〜4でそれぞれ測定された波長シフトを表し、
ΔT1,2,3,4、Δε1,2,3,4、Δg1,2,3,4は、解かれるべき未知数、つまり各回折格子1〜4での温度、歪み、および気体拡散のそれぞれの変化量を表し、
KT1,2,3,4、Kε1,2,3,4、Kg1,2,3,4は定数で、各回折格子1〜4での温度、歪み、および気体拡散のそれぞれの係数を表す。これらの係数は、較正プロセスにより得られる。
図1は、温度及び圧力を測定するために使われる、本発明の一側面に従う例示的なFBGに基づくセンサ10の、尺度は一定しない断面の図解を示す。図2は、センサ10の平面図を示し、ファイバ区域20とダイアフラム30を除去してある。
図3Aと図3Bは、センサ10に用いられる、回折格子21〜24を含むツインコア光ファイバ区域20の、尺度は一定しない断面図と側面図をそれぞれ示す。図4Aと図4Bは、ファイバ区域20の外径より少しだけ大きい内径を持つ多孔性ガラス管27の、断面図と側面図をそれぞれ示す。多孔性ガラス管の両端部は融着または他の類似の手段により回折格子ペア23/24の周りのファイバ区域20に接合され、その結果この領域のファイバの剛性が回折格子ペア21/22を含むファイバ領域におけるファイバの剛性と異なるようになる。この配置は、2つの回折格子領域に異なる歪みを引き起こすであろう。管が多孔性である理由は、2つの回折格子領域における気体拡散効果が同じになり、その結果線型系1の中の未知数の数を減らすためである。
センサダイアフラム30と支持構造を、細部に亘って説明する。
ここでは、ベロウズ40を細部に亘って説明する。上に説明したように、ベロウズの機能は、ダイアフラム30の変位の変化を回折格子21〜24に亘って印加される歪み量に転換する、機械的連結を提供することである。
この節の目的のために、3つのセンサ回折格子21、22、23はそれぞれ回折格子1、回折格子2、回折格子3と呼ばれる。
回折格子1、2、3は全て同じ気体拡散定数Kgを持つ。
回折格子1と3は同じ温度定数KT1と同じ歪み定数Kε1を持つ。
回折格子2は、回折格子1と3の温度定数または歪み定数のどちらか一方または両方と明瞭に異なる、温度定数KT2と歪み定数Kε2を持つ。
回折格子1、2、3は全て同じ温度Tの変化と気体拡散gの変化を経験する。
回折格子1と2は、並べて配置されているので、印加される歪みε1の同じ変化を経験する。断面積を増加させる多孔性ガラス管の存在により、回折格子3は減少された印加歪みCε1(つまり、係数Cにより調整されたε1)の変化を経験する。Cは較正により得られる。

図9Aと図9Bは、本発明の更なる実施に一致した、気体に富む環境のための例示的な圧力及び温度センサ構成90の、それぞれ断面図と分解断面図を示す。構成90の一つの魅力的な特徴は、そのすべての構成要素が、選択された接続領域98(図9Bに示される)において融着またはガラスソルダにより互いに接続することができる、石英または石英ガラスから作られることができることである。一方、システム10(図1)は種々の金属やガラスのような多様な材料から作られる構成要素を備える。
図1の場合と同様に、線型系1の簡略化はこのセンサ構成についての以下の仮定によって行うことができる。
回折格子1、2、3、4は全て同じ気体拡散定数Kgを持つ。
回折格子1と3は同じ温度定数KT1と同じ歪み定数Kε1を持つ。
回折格子2と4は、回折格子1と3の温度定数または歪み定数のどちらか一方または両方と明瞭に異なる、温度定数KT2と歪み定数Kε2を持つ。
回折格子1と2は無歪みである。
回折格子1、2、3、4は、潜在的にセンサの体積が非常に小さいことにより、全て同じ温度Tの変化を経験する。

図10は、本発明の更なる一側面に従った、気体に富む環境での使用に適した歪み及び温度センサ100の、断面の概念的な図解を示す。センサ100は、回折格子102を書き込まれたツインコアファイバ101と、枠104の内部に据え付けられた歪み抵抗部材103を備える。
以上に述べたように、本発明の一側面に従ったセンサにおいて、センサ回折格子は気体拡散の変化に応答して全て同じ波長シフトを示す。本発明の更なる視点は、気体拡散の変化に応答して一致した波長シフトを示す複数のコアを持つファイバと、そのようなファイバを製作する技術に向けられる。述べられる技術は2つ以上のコアを持つファイバにおいて利用できる、ということが認識されるであろう。

- 選択された気体に富む環境の中での使用のための光ファイバセンサであって、
筐体と、
前記筐体の内部を通って伸びるように、前記筐体の中に据え付けられた先端を持つ光ファイバと、
ツインコア光ファイバの先端に書き込まれた複数の回折格子を備えるセンサ配列であって、前記回折格子が入力された光を受けて温度、気体拡散、および歪みのそれぞれの変化に応答して変化する波長を持つそれぞれ独立の出力を提供するように構成される、センサ配列
を備え、
温度、歪み、および気体拡散の変化はセンサ配列の中の前記回折格子のそれぞれ独立の出力から導き出すことができ、
前記複数の回折格子のそれぞれは、温度、歪み、および気体拡散の変化を導き出す際に気体拡散のパラメーターを除外できるようにするため、ファイバ区域での気体拡散に応答する等しい波長シフトを有するように構成され、
それによって、異なる気体拡散のレベルにおいて測定値が得られる、
光ファイバセンサ。

- 前記ファイバ区域の先端が、選択された大きさの予備歪みがファイバ区域に縦軸方向に加えられるように、そして前記センサ配列の中の少なくとも1つの回折格子がファイバ区域の歪み耐性領域に位置するように、前記筐体の中に据え付けられ、
その結果、回折格子全体に加えられる歪みの変化が、少なくとも1つの回折格子において他の回折格子での歪みの変化と比べて比例的に小さい変化を生ずる、
請求項1記載のセンサ。
- 前記ファイバ区域の先端が、センサ回折格子の周りのファイバクラッドの膨出部と、ファイバの膨出部と膨出していない領域の間のテーパー付き移行部を含み、
前記膨出部に囲まれた回折格子全体に縦方向の予備圧縮歪みを加えるために、前記ファイバ区域の先端が、膨出部のそれぞれの端をぴったりと収納する形に形成された端部支持片の間で前記筐体内に封止され、
その結果、膨出部に囲まれた回折格子は、他の回折格子が経験しない歪みの変化を経験する、
請求項1記載のセンサ。
- 前記ファイバ区域の先端が、センサ回折格子の周りのファイバクラッドの膨出部と、ファイバの膨出部と膨出していない領域の間のテーパー付き移行部を含み、
前記膨出部に囲まれた回折格子全体に縦方向の予備圧縮歪みを加えるために、前記ファイバ区域の先端が、膨出部のそれぞれの端をぴったりと収納する形に形成された端部支持片の間で一つの筐体内に封止され、
その結果、膨出部に囲まれた回折格子は、他の回折格子が経験しない歪みの変化を経験する、
請求項1記載のセンサ。
- 前記ファイバ区域が、1つまたはそれ以上の回折格子の全体に加えられる選択された大きさの予備歪みの状態で、枠の中に据え付けられ、
前記枠が、歪みと周囲温度が測定される構造物に取り付け可能であるように構成され、
前記枠が、前記構造物の歪み状態の変化が枠の歪み状態の変化に転換されるように構成され、かつ
前記枠の歪み状態の変化が、書き込まれた回折格子の歪み状態の変化に転換される、
請求項1記載のセンサ。
- 周囲の圧力の変化をセンサ回折格子に加えられる歪みの変化に転換する、転換手段を更に含み、
前記転換手段は、前記筐体の外側に据え付けられて弾性的に変位可能なダイアフラムを備え、前記ダイアフラムは周囲の圧力の変化がダイアフラムの変位を引き起こすように構成され、かつ
前記ダイアフラムは、ダイアフラムの変位が前記センサ回折格子全体に加えられる歪みの変化に転換されるように、前記ファイバ区域の先端に機械的に結合される、
請求項1記載のセンサ。
- 選択された気体に富む環境において光ファイバに基づく検知を実施する方法であって、
A 各センサ回折格子が温度の変化、前記センサ回折格子の全体に加えられる歪みの変化、および前記センサ回折格子の全体での選択された気体の拡散の変化に応答するそれぞれの波長シフトを有し、複数のセンサ回折格子のそれぞれが気体拡散の変化に応答して同じ波長シフトを持つように構成される、光ファイバの1つまたはそれ以上の区域に書き込まれた複数のセンサ回折格子を用意する、
B 入力光を前記複数のセンサ回折格子に供給する、そして
C 温度、加えられた歪み、および気体拡散を含む物理量の群からの1つまたはそれ以上の物理量のそれぞれの変化の大きさの単一で唯一の値を決定するために、複数のセンサ回折格子から反射される波長シフトのデータを利用する、
のステップを含み、ここで、ステップCにおいて気体拡散のパラメーターが除外される方法。
- 選択された気体に富む環境において圧力または温度を決定する方法であって、
A 光信号を受けその光信号に応じて光を反射することができる3つのファイバブラッググレーティング(FBG)素子を用意し、それぞれのFBG素子からの反射光はそれぞれのFBG素子のパラメーターに依存する波長を持ち、選択された気体に富む環境における圧力または温度の決定は前記光信号に応じてFBG素子により反射された光の波長と比べて得られて、
第1と第2のFBG素子は第1のペアのFBG素子を形成し、第3のFBG素子は第1のペアのFBG素子とは区別され、
3つのFBG素子は、それぞれ異なる温度係数を持ち、それぞれのFBG素子への選択された気体の拡散の存在における同じ波長シフトを持ち、ここで歪み係数は同じでなくてよく、かつ
センサの中の前記FBG素子は、使用中に、選択された気体に富む環境において加えられる温度と加えられる歪みに曝されること、
B それぞれのFBG素子の中のそれぞれの歪み部品の形態をとり、加えられる圧力を前記FBG素子に結合するための機構を用意すること、
C 加えられる圧力による歪みが第3のFBG素子と第1のペアのFBG素子との間で異なる一方で、第3のFBG素子と第1のペアのFBG素子の両方が、選択された気体に富む環境において同じ気体と温度の条件に曝されるように、前記第3のFBG素子を機械的に補強する機構を用意すること、および
D 第1のペアのFBG素子と第3のFBG素子からの反射光の、検出された波長に基づいて、加えられた圧力または加えられた温度を決定すること、
を含む方法。
- ツインコア光ファイバを製作する方法であって、両方のファイバコアは気体拡散の変化に応答して許容誤差内で同じ波長シフトを有し、
A コアに異なるドーパントおよび/またはドーパント濃度を持つ、シングルコアファイバを作る、
B 前記シングルコアファイバに回折格子を書く、
C 気体拡散特性について、前記回折格子をテストする、
D 気体拡散特性に最も影響を及ぼす1つまたはそれ以上のドーパントに関し、前記シングルコアファイバのそれぞれのドーパントプロファイルを操作する、
E ステップCで測定される気体拡散特性が2つのコアで同じになるまで、A〜Dのステップを繰り返す、
F 前記2つのコアを使ってツインコアファイバを作り、熱、歪み、および気体拡散の効果を特徴づける、
のステップを含む方法。
