Description
The present invention relates to a method for recovering a rare earth metal from a rare earth magnet.
Rare earth elements are indispensable materials for improving the performance of electronic products such as storage batteries, light emitting diodes, and magnets. Rare earth magnets that are typical applications of rare earth elements (for example, RE-Fe-B magnets, where RE (rare earth element) is a rare earth mainly composed of Nd and Pr and partially substituted with Dy, Ce, etc. In addition to Fe, transition elements such as Co and some additional elements such as Al may be substituted), which has a strong residual magnetic flux density and coercive force that take advantage of the strong magnetic anisotropy of rare earth elements. It is a magnet and has been applied to a wide range of applications such as ordinary OA equipment, MRI equipment, automobile parts, and gas magnetic field treatment equipment in chemical plants.
Currently, rare earth magnets mounted on used products are usually discarded as iron scrap. However, since the rare earth magnets to be discarded contain a high concentration of rare earth elements that have recently been feared for stable procurement, establishment of a rare earth element recycling technology from rare earth magnets is required.
As a background art of the rare earth element regeneration method, there is a molten metal extraction method. Magnesium (Mg) and silver (Ag) melts have the property of dissolving rare earth metals in rare earth magnets and not dissolving Fe-B alloys. Using this property, Mg or Ag is heated to a temperature higher than the melting point to make magnesium or Ag a liquid (molten metal), and by bringing the molten metal into contact with the rare earth magnet, the rare earth metal is mainly melted from the magnet. The method of extracting to the metal side is the molten metal extraction method. Unlike wet processes such as solvent extraction and molten salt electrolysis, which are applied in recycling magnetic grinding scraps generated in the magnet manufacturing process, molten metal extraction is a dry process that does not use acids or organic solvents. Therefore, it is expected as a rare earth metal recovery process with low environmental impact and low cost.
In recent years, the rare earth element dysprosium (Dy) has been rapidly used as an additive for increasing the coercive force of neodymium magnets (permanent magnets mainly composed of Nd-Fe-B intermetallic compounds). However, it is extremely ubiquitous on the earth, and there are concerns about securing a stable supply. Therefore, the development of the rare earth element recycling technology is urgently required along with the development of technology for reducing the amount used.
Non-Patent
Therefore, the present invention provides a method for recovering a rare earth metal from a rare earth magnet, which makes it possible to recover the rare earth metal from the rare earth magnet with high efficiency by a molten metal extraction method.
In order to solve the above problems, in the present invention, in a rare earth metal recovery method for recovering a rare earth metal from a rare earth magnet, an extraction step of extracting the rare earth metal into molten magnesium from a magnet having the rare earth metal, and the rare earth metal is extracted. Separating the separated magnet from the liquid magnesium in which the rare earth metal is dissolved, and recovering the rare earth metal from the liquid magnesium containing the separated rare earth metal by vaporizing the magnesium Including a rare earth metal recovery step and a magnesium recovery step for condensing or solidifying the vaporized magnesium, and in the extraction step, the magnesium weight to be charged is 5 to 15 times the weight of the rare earth magnet to be charged It is characterized by.
In order to solve the above-mentioned problems, in the rare earth metal recovery method of the present invention, the extraction step is performed in a reaction vessel made of tantalum or molybdenum or in an argon atmosphere.
According to the present invention, a method for recovering a rare earth metal using a rare earth magnet as a starting material can be provided. In addition to the extraction of rare earth metals from rare earth magnets and the separation of magnesium containing extracted rare earth metals and the remaining Fe-B alloy of rare earth magnets after extraction of rare earth metals, Separation of rare earth metals can be realized at the same time.
Hereinafter, embodiments of the rare earth metal recovery method according to the present invention will be described in detail. Note that, in the drawings for describing the embodiments for implementation, the same members are denoted by the same reference symbols in principle, and repeated description thereof is omitted.
In this embodiment, an example of a rare earth metal recovery apparatus and method for recovering rare earth metal from a rare earth magnet will be described.

The amount of magnesium (solid) input is changed in the ratio of 0.5 to 40 times the input weight of the rare earth magnet in seven ways shown in Fig. 3 (a), and the rare earth metal recovery process is carried out. Thus, the extraction rate of each rare earth metal was confirmed. Each of the input weight ratios of magnesium (solid) and rare earth magnet is referred to as Example 1 to Example 7, and the other extraction conditions are the same.

In the extraction step of the rare earth metal recovery method of this embodiment, the rare earth metal extraction reaction is preferably performed at a temperature of 650 ° C. or higher and 1000 ° C. or lower. The reason why the temperature is 650 ° C. or higher is that the melting point of magnesium is 650 ° C., and that the temperature is 1000 ° C. or lower is to suppress the elution of Fe from the rare earth magnet in the extraction process as much as possible.

As described above, Dy is a very rare element compared to Nd and Pr, and a rare earth metal recovery method that maximizes the Dy recycling rate is desired.
Therefore, in this embodiment, the number of samples is 7, but it is desirable to target the weight of magnesium to be charged, for example, around 10 times the weight of the rare earth magnet. Since some errors are expected, it should be 5 to 15 times the rare earth magnet weight, which is the magnesium input weight in the expected range of 80% or more of the maximum Dy extraction rate this time. desirable. For this purpose, for example, one or both of the amount of magnesium and the amount of rare earth magnet (weight, volume, etc.) are measured, and one or both of the amount of magnesium and the amount of rare earth magnet to be charged to the above ratio. Can be adjusted. When magnesium and rare earth magnets are automatically charged, a mechanism for automatically adjusting the weighing of magnesium and rare earth magnets may be provided in the apparatus.

As a result of Examples 1 to 7, a spongy rare earth metal composed of Nd, Pr, and Dy was obtained as the
Although a trace amount of Fe impurities remained in the recovered rare earth metal alloy, there is no particular problem because it is used for the above applications.
