Description
The present invention relates to a transmissive display device. In particular, the present invention relates to a transmissive display device to which an organic electroluminescence element is applied.
Research on a light-emitting device having an electroluminescence element (hereinafter referred to as an EL element) as a self-luminous light-emitting device is active. This light emitting device is also called an organic EL or an organic light emitting diode. These light-emitting devices have features such as fast response speed, low voltage, and low power consumption driving suitable for moving image display. Attention has been paid.
In recent years, a display device having a so-called see-through function in which all or a part of a display portion has light transmittance and the other side of the display portion can be visually recognized has attracted attention. Such a display device having a see-through function includes a windshield of a vehicle, a window glass of a building such as a house or a building, a glass or case of a store window of a store, or an information terminal device or a head mount such as a mobile phone or a tablet terminal. Application to various uses such as a wearable display such as a display or a head-up display used for an aircraft is expected.
By using a display device having a see-through function in this way, the object is viewed while displaying information about the object on the other side of the display device, or an image is displayed on the display device to decorate the object on the other side of the display device. Can be applied. Furthermore, a mode in which the other side of the display device can be seen like glass and a mode in which an image is displayed on the display device can be switched as appropriate (see, for example, Patent Document 1).
In this specification, a display device in which all or a part of the display portion has light transmittance and the other side of the display portion is visible is defined as a display device having a see-through function. For example, a display device in which the other side of the display device can be seen in the entire display area is one mode of a display device having a see-through function, and there is also a display device in which the other side of the display device can be seen only in a part of the display region. It is an embodiment of a display device having a see-through function. Such a display device having a see-through function has a problem in that the scenery on the other side of the display device is reflected in the video, making it difficult to see the video on the display device. This is because the contrast of the image of the display device is lowered by the light incident from the back side opposite to the observer, and the visibility is lowered.
The present invention has been made under such a technical background. Therefore, an object of one embodiment of the present invention is to provide a display device that can improve the visibility of a display portion from one observation surface in a display device having a see-through function.
Here, in order to solve the above-described problem, at least a light-emitting region having a plurality of light-emitting elements that emit light from one surface of the display device and translucency with respect to light (also referred to as external light) beyond the display device. A first unit having a non-light-emitting region, and a second unit having a region for controlling a transmission amount of external light from the other surface to the one surface of the display device. The present inventors have conceived a configuration of a display device in which the light emitting area overlaps with the area for controlling the amount of external light transmitted through the second unit, and has solved the problem.
That is, the display device of one embodiment of the present invention includes a first unit including a light-emitting region having a plurality of light-emitting elements that emit light from at least one surface and a light-transmitting non-light-emitting region, and one surface from the other surface. A second unit including a region having a plurality of optical elements that control the amount of transmitted external light, and the light-transmitting non-light-emitting region of the first unit overlaps with the optical element of the second unit; Display device.
The display device of one embodiment of the present invention includes a light-emitting element and a light-transmitting non-light-emitting region. Therefore, it is possible to obtain a display device having a so-called see-through function in which the other side of the display portion can be visually recognized together with the display of the light emitting area.
In addition, the display device of one embodiment of the present invention includes an optical element that controls the amount of external light transmitted so as to overlap with the light-transmitting non-light-emitting region. Therefore, the display contrast of the display device can be increased by controlling the transmission amount of the external light in the region including the optical element that controls the transmission amount of the external light. This is because the optical element reduces light that is incident from the back side opposite to the observer of the display device and lowers the display contrast.
The display device of one embodiment of the present invention is a display device in which the plurality of optical elements that control the amount of external light transmitted from the other surface to the one surface of the display device are liquid crystal elements.
The liquid crystal element applies a voltage between the electrodes, but current hardly flows between the electrodes, so that power consumption is low. Therefore, power consumption of the display element can be reduced.
In the display device of one embodiment of the present invention, the first polarizing plate and the second polarizing plate each include a light-emitting region having a plurality of light-emitting elements that emit light from at least one surface of the display device, and a light-transmitting non-light-emitting region. A substrate including a light-emitting region and a substrate including a plurality of optical elements that control the amount of external light transmitted from the other surface of the display device to the one surface are sandwiched between the light-transmitting non-light-emitting region and the optical element. The display device is characterized in that the plurality of optical elements that overlap and control the amount of external light transmitted from the other surface to the one surface are liquid crystal elements.
One polarizing plate exists between the observer and the light exit surface of the light emitting region. Therefore, reflection of external light incident from the emission surface is prevented, and the display contrast of the display device can be increased.
In the display device of one embodiment of the present invention, the light-emitting element is an EL element that emits light from at least one surface.
Since the EL element is a self-luminous light emitting element, a display device with high display contrast can be obtained. In addition, a display device exhibiting a desired light emission color can be obtained by changing a light emitting layer constituting an EL element.
Further, an EL element including a light emitting layer that emits red light, an EL element including a light emitting layer that emits green light, and an EL element including a light emitting layer that emits blue light are used as one pixel, and a plurality of pixels are formed in the light emitting region. By doing so, the display device can perform color display. Alternatively, a plurality of light-emitting elements can be formed using the same light-emitting layer that emits white light, and white light emitted from the light-emitting elements can be dispersed using a color filter to perform color display. In this case, the color filter may be formed on a substrate on which an EL element is formed or on a counter substrate.
In the display device of one embodiment of the present invention, the plurality of optical elements that control the amount of external light transmitted from the other surface to the one surface of the display device are liquid crystal elements including a liquid crystal material exhibiting a blue phase. It is a display device characterized by this.
一般的にEL素子は発光の応答速度がTN(Twisted Nematic)型液晶素子、MVA(Multi−domain Vertical Alignment)型液晶素子及びIPS(In−Plane Switching)型液晶素子より速い。 In general, an EL element has a light emission response speed faster than that of a TN (Twisted Nematic) type liquid crystal element, an MVA (Multi-domain Vertical Alignment) type liquid crystal element, and an IPS (In-Plane Switching) type liquid crystal element. A mode using a liquid crystal exhibiting a blue phase (blue phase liquid crystal) is a liquid crystal mode that can respond at high speed. For this reason, if a liquid crystal element using a blue phase liquid crystal having a high response speed is used as the plurality of optical elements that control the transmission amount of external light, the light transmission amount is controlled to display an EL element having a high response speed of light emission. The optical element can follow. Therefore, it is possible to increase the display contrast of the moving image portion in a state where the scenery beyond the display device is visible.
In the display device of one embodiment of the present invention, the plurality of optical elements that control the amount of external light transmitted from the other surface to the one surface of the display device are shutters using MEMS. Device.
When a shutter using MEMS is applied to the optical element, light that lowers the display contrast incident from the back side opposite to the observer of the display device can be further reduced, so that the display contrast of the display device is increased. be able to. This is because a shutter using MEMS that physically controls the amount of transmitted external light can increase the ratio of the brightness between the bright state and the dark state.
One embodiment of the present invention can provide a display device having a see-through function. According to one embodiment of the present invention, a display device with a high contrast can be provided in a display device having a see-through function.

<About EL layer>
An EL layer applicable to the
The
The
The
The
The electron transport layer 214 includes a substance having a high electron transport property. A substance having a high electron transporting property refers to a substance having electron mobility higher than that of holes, and the ratio of electron mobility to hole mobility (= electron mobility / hole mobility) is 100. It is preferable to use a larger one. The electron mobility of the electron transport layer 214 is preferably 1 × 10 −6 cm 2 / Vs or higher. Specifically, a metal complex having a quinoline skeleton, a metal complex having a benzoquinoline skeleton, a metal complex having an oxazole ligand, and a metal complex having a thiazole ligand can be used. Specific examples of the metal complex having a quinoline skeleton include tris (8-quinolinolato) aluminum (abbreviation: Alq). As a specific example of the metal complex having a benzoquinoline skeleton, bis (10-hydroxybenzo [h] quinolinato) beryllium (abbreviation: BeBq 2 ) can be given. As a specific example of a metal complex having an oxazole-based ligand, bis [2- (2-hydroxyphenyl) benzoxazolate] zinc (abbreviation: Zn (BOX) 2 ) can be given. As a specific example of a metal complex having a thiazole-based ligand, bis [2- (2-hydroxyphenyl) benzothiazolate] zinc (abbreviation: Zn (BTZ) 2 ) can be given. In addition to metal complexes, 2- (4-biphenylyl) -5- (4-tert-butylphenyl) -1,3,4-oxadiazole (abbreviation: PBD) and bathophenanthroline (abbreviation: BPhen) are also included. Can be used. The above-described substances with specific examples are mainly substances having an electron mobility of 10 −6 cm 2 / Vs or more. Note that a substance other than these substances may be used for the electron-transport layer 214 as long as it has a property of transporting more electrons than holes. The electron transport layer 214 may have a single-layer structure or a stacked structure.
Further, a layer for controlling the movement of electron carriers may be provided between the light emitting
Further, an electron injection layer may be provided in contact with the

A plurality of pixels are formed in a light emitting region, with an EL element including a light emitting layer exhibiting red light emission, an EL element including a light emitting layer exhibiting green light emission, and an EL element including a light emitting layer exhibiting blue light emission as one pixel. Thus, the display device can perform color display.

(Embodiment 3)
In this embodiment, a
The
The
A
As the hole-transporting organic compound, an organic compound having a hole mobility of 10 −6 cm 2 / Vs or higher is preferably used. Specifically, an aromatic amine derivative, a carbazole derivative, an aromatic hydrocarbon derivative, or a dendrimer, oligomer, polymer or the like having these derivatives can be used. As the metal oxide mixed with them, an oxide of a metal belonging to Group 4 to Group 8 in the periodic table of elements may be used. Specifically, vanadium oxide, niobium oxide, tantalum oxide, chromium oxide , Molybdenum oxide, tungsten oxide, manganese oxide, and rhenium oxide. These metal oxides are preferable because of their high electron accepting properties. Molybdenum oxide is particularly preferable because it is stable in the air, has a low hygroscopic property, and is easy to handle.
Although the light-emitting element having two light-emitting units has been described in this embodiment mode, the present invention is not limited to this structure. That is, the tandem light-emitting element may include three or more light-emitting units. Also in this case, a charge generation layer is provided between the light emitting units. For example, a first unit, a second unit manufactured using a first light-emitting material that emits light having a longer wavelength (for example, red light), a longer wavelength than the first unit, and the first A light-emitting element including a third unit manufactured using a second light-emitting material that emits light having a shorter wavelength than that of the light-emitting material (for example, green light emission) may be configured. By using these light emitting elements, a white light emitting device can be obtained.
The
In the light-emitting element using the
As described above, the structure described in this embodiment can be combined as appropriate with any of the structures described in the other embodiments.

In this embodiment, one embodiment of an optical element that can be used in the present invention will be described with reference to FIG.

The response speed of the liquid crystal will be described with reference to FIGS. FIGS. 7B and 7C are diagrams of normalized transmittance and time normalized by setting the maximum transmittance to 100%. FIG. 7B shows the case where a liquid crystal exhibiting a blue phase is used, and FIG. 7C shows the case where a liquid crystal in a vertical alignment (VA) mode is used. As shown in FIG. 7B, by using a liquid crystal exhibiting a blue phase (blue phase liquid crystal), a rise time 901 (time required to reach a normalized transmittance of 90% from a normalized transmittance of 10%) and The fall time 902 (time required to reach the normalized transmittance of 10% from the normalized transmittance of 90%) is determined from the
The mode using the blue phase liquid crystal is a liquid crystal mode that can respond at high speed.

(Embodiment 7)
In this embodiment, one embodiment of the structure of the
FIG. 12 is a perspective view of the shutter 1300. The shutter 1300 has a movable
The
The other side of the movable
The
An
The
When a voltage is applied to the
A method for manufacturing the shutter 1300 will be described below. A sacrificial layer having a predetermined shape is formed on the light-shielding layer having the
Next, a light-shielding material is formed on the sacrificial layer by a printing method, a sputtering method, an evaporation method, or the like, and then selectively etched to form the shutter 1300. As the light-shielding material, for example, a metal such as chromium, molybdenum, nickel, titanium, copper, tungsten, tantalum, neodymium, aluminum, or silicon, an alloy, or an oxide can be used. Alternatively, the shutter 1300 is formed by an inkjet method. The shutter 1300 is preferably formed with a thickness of 100 nm to 5 μm.
Next, by removing the sacrificial layer, the shutter 1300 movable in space can be formed.
The first display portion having the light-emitting element provided in the light-transmitting support body described in the above embodiment, and the light-transmitting support body, which includes the shutter-shaped light shielding means having the above-described structure. By providing it between the second display portion having the light-scattering liquid crystal layer provided on the display device, it is possible to provide a display device that can easily perform various display modes according to applications and situations.
As described above, the structures described in this embodiment can be combined as appropriate with any of the structures described in the other embodiments.
