Description
The present invention relates to a display device using a light emitting unit capable of locally controlling luminance and a control method thereof.
In recent years, various power saving technologies related to video display devices have been proposed. As a method for realizing low power consumption in a video display device having a backlight, a technique is known in which the supply voltage to the backlight is stopped during the synchronization period of the video signal (see Patent Document 1). Also known is a technique that controls the brightness of the backlight for each area according to the video signal level and improves the contrast by performing image processing in conjunction with it, so-called local dimming. (See Patent Document 2). With this technology, the effect can be enhanced by reducing the size of the backlight control area and individually controlling the brightness. In this case, since more detailed light emission control is required, in recent years, a light emitting diode (LED) having excellent controllability and high-speed response has been adopted as a light source. Since LEDs have individual differences and aging changes in characteristics such as brightness and forward voltage, there is a problem that wasteful power is consumed when all LEDs are driven with a uniform power supply voltage.
Therefore, in order to cause the LED to emit light with high efficiency, a DC-DC converter (hereinafter simply referred to as a DC converter) that divides the illumination area into a plurality of LED blocks and supplies power individually to each LED block. A power supply circuit using is provided. The LED blocks are individually controlled so that the LED drive voltage is the minimum operable voltage.
In the conventional technique, when there is an LED block that does not need to be lit at a certain time, control is performed to turn off the LED of the block. However, even when the DC converter supplying the power supply voltage to the LED block is in a no-load state, the DC converter continues the switching operation. For this reason, there has been a problem that a switching loss that does not contribute to light emission occurs.
An object of the present invention is to determine that a light source unit connected to a power supply unit is extinguished, and to stop the switching operation of the power supply unit corresponding to the light source unit, thereby realizing a reduction in power consumption. And its control method is proposed.
In order to solve the above-described problems, an apparatus according to the present invention includes an illumination unit that illuminates a display screen of a display unit with a plurality of light source units, and a plurality of power supply units that respectively supply power to the plurality of light source units. According to the present invention, it is possible to reduce the power consumption by determining that the light source unit connected to the power supply unit is turned off and stopping the switching operation of the power supply unit corresponding to the light source unit.
A display device according to the present invention is a display device including an illumination unit that illuminates a display screen of a display unit with a plurality of light source units, and a plurality of DC-DC converters that respectively supply power to the plurality of light source units. Calculating means for calculating the target luminance of the plurality of light source units from the input video signal and outputting the target luminance signal; and a plurality of means for acquiring the target luminance signal and controlling the switching operations of the plurality of DC-DC converters, respectively. Operation control means . The operation control means stops the switching operation of the DC-DC converter corresponding to the light source unit that is turned off when displaying the video related to the input video signal on the display screen among the plurality of light source units , Control is performed to start the switching operation of the DC-DC converter at a time point before the set start adjustment time from the lighting start point of the light source unit.
[First Embodiment]
In the first embodiment of the present invention, an application example to a liquid crystal display device that controls black insertion and local dimming will be described.
FIG. 1 is a block diagram illustrating a schematic configuration of a
The
The same number of BL power
・ Light-off timing information by black insertion control.
-Off area information by local dimming control.

The BL power
Each of the BL power

Next, the operation of the BL power
First, the blocks in the video

The following signals are input to the BL power
A black insertion timing signal from the black
The unlit area calculation unit 106a1 in the BL power
Similar operations are performed in the BL power
As described above, the BL power
FIG. 3 is a diagram for explaining the operation of the BL power
FIG. 3C shows a temporal change of the extinguishing area at the time of black insertion control, and shows a result of performing a logical product operation on each signal according to FIGS. 3A and 3B. In the period t1, there are lighting areas at three places in the left half, the EN signal output from the BL
FIG. 4A shows the control range of the LED block by each DC converter. FIG. 4B is a timing chart showing the output voltage of each DC converter, the switching operation state, and the output of each BL power supply controller in the period t1-t4.
In accordance with the logical operation described above, the BL power supply control unit generates an EN signal (see “BL power supply control unit 1-4 output”) of the DC converter as shown in FIG. The
According to the first embodiment, the power consumption can be reduced by temporarily stopping the switching operation of the DC converter together with the LED turning-off control by local dimming or black insertion.
Note that, in application to a self-luminous display device, converters that respectively supply power to light emitting units corresponding to a plurality of light emitting regions are used. In this case, luminance control for controlling the luminance of each light emitting region and operation control for determining that the light emitting unit is extinguished and stopping the switching operation of the DC converter corresponding to the light emitting unit are performed.
[Second Embodiment]
Next, a second embodiment of the present invention will be described. In the second embodiment, in addition to the first embodiment, in consideration of the rising characteristics of the DC converter, operation control of the DC converter is performed after securing a start adjustment time at ON (hereinafter referred to as a soft start time). As a result, even when a DC converter that takes time to start is used, stable operation is possible. In the following, only differences from the first embodiment will be described, and the same components as in the first embodiment will be described using the same reference numerals as those used in the first embodiment, and detailed description thereof will be omitted.

FIG. 7 is a timing chart for explaining the operation of the BL power
According to the second embodiment, it is possible to set the rest period in consideration of the soft start time corresponding to the period from the start of the DC converter to the operation in the stable state. As a result, even when a DC converter that takes time to start from the start of power supply is used, the DC converter can be stably operated.
In application to the self-luminous display device, control for starting the DC converter is performed a predetermined time for starting adjustment before the light emission start time of the light emitting unit that has been extinguished.
[Third Embodiment]
Next, a third embodiment of the present invention will be described. In the second embodiment, the soft start time is a fixed length. In the third embodiment, the load amount at the time of rising of each DC converter is calculated, and in the case of heavy load, the time required for soft start (referred to as soft start time) is lengthened, and in the case of light load, soft start is required. Control to shorten the time. As a result, stable operation can be realized while reducing the switching loss of the DC converter as much as possible. Only differences from the second embodiment will be described below.
The difference from the second embodiment is that the in-control-area luminance

The in-control area brightness
The control area luminance

FIG. 10A shows the control range of the LED block by each DC converter. FIG. 10B is a timing chart showing the output voltage and load of each DC converter, the switching operation state, and the output of each BL power supply controller in the first to fourth periods t1-t4. The EN signal output from the BL power
In 3rd Embodiment, the calculation process of the load amount concerning a DC converter is performed from a brightness | luminance statistic at the timing which a LED block changes to a lighting state from a light extinction state. By changing the length of the soft start required time according to the calculated load amount, stable operation can be realized while reducing the switching loss of the DC converter.
Note that in application to a self-luminous display device, the load applied to the DC converter can be calculated from the light emission luminance and light emission area of the light emitting region.
