Description
The present invention relates to an electrophoretic display device and a method for manufacturing the same.
2. Description of the Related Art Conventionally, an electrophoretic display device in which a dispersion of electrophoretic particles is sealed between a pair of substrates (see, for example, Patent Document 1) is known. In recent years, instead of the conventional electrophoretic display device, an electrophoretic display device having a structure in which a plurality of microcapsules or a partition structure is arranged between a pair of substrates has been developed (for example, see Patent Document 2). reference). A dispersion liquid in which a plurality of electrophoretic particles are dispersed in a solvent is enclosed in each of the plurality of microcapsules and the partition wall structure. The electrophoretic display device using the microcapsule is also called a microcapsule type, and the electrophoretic display device having a partition structure is called a partition type.
Compared with conventional electrophoretic display devices, microcapsule-type and partition-type electrophoretic display devices greatly improve various performances and functions such as long-term display stability, responsiveness, contrast, and the number of times that display can be rewritten. ing.
The electrophoretic display device can be applied to a normal (that is, stationary) display in which an arrangement position and a usage form are fixed. In addition, the electrophoretic display device is sheet-like, thin, light, can be easily carried, and can be freely curved. For this reason, the electrophoretic display device can be applied to a flexible display having a high degree of freedom with respect to an arrangement position and a usage pattern, such as an electronic book or an electronic paper.
Incidentally, in electrophoretic display devices, it is known that the characteristics of electrophoretic particles deteriorate due to changes in humidity. As a countermeasure, it is necessary to keep the humidity inside the display (in particular, the electrophoretic layer) constant by applying a moisture-proof resin to the periphery of the display.
It is desirable that the area where the moisture-proof resin is applied (hereinafter also referred to as an application area) be as small as possible. The reason is that by reducing the coating area, the degree of freedom in designing the housing into which the display is incorporated increases. In addition, by reducing the area of the peripheral portion of the element substrate that does not directly contribute to image display, the efficiency of removing the element substrate can be increased and the cost can be reduced.
However, it is difficult to control the flow of the moisture-proof resin by the method of applying the moisture-proof resin by side fill (that is, filling from the peripheral portion), and spreads to the peripheral portion of the element substrate. For this reason, in the prior art, it is necessary to secure a wide peripheral portion in consideration of the spread of the moisture-proof resin.
Therefore, the present invention has been made in view of such circumstances, and an object of the present invention is to provide an electrophoretic display device capable of preventing the moisture-proof resin from flowing out of the substrate and a method for manufacturing the same. To do.
In order to achieve the above object, an electrophoretic display device according to one embodiment of the present invention includes a first substrate having a first electrode, an electrophoretic layer disposed on the first substrate, and the electrophoretic layer. A second substrate having a second electrode disposed on the electrophoretic layer; a bank portion disposed on the first substrate and surrounding an outer periphery of the electrophoretic layer with a gap from the electrophoretic layer; And a moisture-proof resin disposed at a position of the gap on the first substrate and covering a side surface of the electrophoretic layer.
With such a configuration, when the moisture-proof resin is supplied (for example, applied or dripped) onto the first substrate, the moisture-proof resin is allowed to flow outward (that is, away from the electrophoretic layer). It can be suppressed at the bank. Thereby, it is possible to prevent the moisture-proof resin from flowing out of the first substrate. The “first electrode” of the present invention corresponds to, for example, a
The electrophoretic display device further includes a protective film disposed between the first substrate and the electrophoretic layer and covering the first electrode, wherein the protective film and the bank portion are It may be characterized by being composed of the same type of resin. With such a configuration, the first electrode can be protected by the protective film, and the first electrode can be prevented from coming into direct contact with the electrophoretic layer. Further, the protective film can be formed in the same process as the bank portion. For example, a preselected (that is, predetermined) resin is supplied onto the first substrate, and the supplied resin is patterned by a photolithography technique and an etching technique. Thereby, a protective film and a bank part can be formed in the same process. Since the bank portion can be formed using the protective film forming step, it is possible to contribute to the reduction of the manufacturing cost.
In the electrophoretic display device, the moisture-proof resin and the bank portion may be made of the same type of resin. If it is such a structure, the wettability with respect to the bank part of moisture-proof resin can be made favorable. Thereby, the outward flow of the moisture-proof resin can be suppressed at the surface (that is, the side surface and the upper surface) of the bank portion, and the moisture-proof resin can be prevented from flowing out beyond the bank portion.
In the electrophoretic display device, the first substrate has a region exposed from the second substrate in a plan view, and the region includes an outer periphery of the first substrate and the second substrate. A first region in which a distance from the outer periphery of the substrate in plan view is a first distance, and a second region in which the distance is a second distance larger than the first distance; The bank portion includes a first bank portion provided in the first region and a second bank portion provided in the second region, and at least a part of the second bank portion. May be provided at a position farther from the outer periphery of the second substrate in plan view than the first bank portion. With such a configuration, the distance from the side surface of the electrophoretic layer to the bank is larger in at least part of the second bank than the first bank. Therefore, more moisture-proof resin can be stored between the electrophoretic layer and at least a part of the second bank portion. Thereby, it can prevent that moisture-proof resin flows out over a bank part. The “first region” in the present invention corresponds to, for example, a narrow region R1 described later. As the “second region”, for example, a wide region R2 described later corresponds.
Further, in the electrophoretic display device, the second bank portion has a shape that extends while meandering in a direction along the outer periphery of the electrophoretic layer (that is, swinging left and right in a plan view). This may be a feature. With such a configuration, the length of the second bank portion in contact with the moisture-proof resin is increased, and the contact area with the moisture-proof resin is increased. For this reason, the effect of suppressing the flow of the moisture-proof resin due to the wettability of the second bank portion can be further enhanced.
In the above electrophoretic display device, the second bank portion is provided with a gap portion that leads from the inside to the outside of the region surrounded by the bank portion, and the first bank portion is provided with the gap portion. May be characterized in that the gap is not provided. With such a configuration, when the amount of moisture-proof resin supplied to the first substrate is too large, the second area where the excess moisture-proof resin has a sufficient margin through the gap portion. Spill to Thereby, it is possible to prevent the excess moisture-proof resin from overflowing from the first region.
In the electrophoretic display device, the first substrate has a region exposed from the second substrate in a plan view, and the region includes an outer periphery of the first substrate and the second substrate. A first region in which a distance from the outer periphery of the substrate in plan view is a first distance, and a second region in which the distance is a second distance larger than the first distance; The bank portion includes a first bank portion provided in the first region and a second bank portion provided in the second region, and the bank portion includes the bank portion. A gap portion that leads from the inside to the outside of the region surrounded by the portion may be provided, and the gap portion may not be provided in the first bank portion.
A method of manufacturing an electrophoretic display device according to another aspect of the present invention includes a first substrate having a first electrode, an electrophoretic layer disposed on the first substrate, and an electrophoretic layer on the electrophoretic layer. An electrophoretic display device comprising: a second substrate having a second electrode disposed thereon, wherein the region of the first substrate on which the electrophoretic layer is disposed is separated from the region. A step of forming a bank portion on the first substrate so as to surround the first substrate, and a position of the gap on the first substrate after the electrophoretic layer is disposed on the first substrate. And supplying a moisture-proof resin to cover the side surface of the electrophoretic layer with the moisture-proof resin. With such a method, when supplying the moisture-proof resin onto the first substrate, the outward flow of the moisture-proof resin can be suppressed at the bank portion. Thereby, it is possible to prevent the moisture-proof resin from flowing out of the first substrate.

Next, as shown in FIG. 3B, one surface (for example, the upper surface) 10a of the

That is, the
Next, as shown in FIG. 3C, a moisture-

(3.3) Third Configuration FIGS. 10A and 10B are plan views showing a third configuration example according to the third embodiment of the present invention. As shown to Fig.10 (a), the

(3.5) Modifications In the present invention, the second embodiment and the third embodiment may be combined. An example is shown below.

As shown in FIG. 17, the
