外枠体57は、合成樹脂製であって、第3及び第4面53,54の内面には矩形薄板状の正極体(カソード)60A,60Bがそれぞれ配置されており、外枠体57内には、棒状の負極体(アノード)66が挿抜可能に挿入される。正極体60A,60Bと負極体66とは第1区域48に位置し、正極体60A,60Bは負極体66よりも幅寸法が大きく、正極体60A,60B間に負極体66が位置する。また、外枠体57内には所要量の液体、例えば、外枠体57内全体の許容容量の約70〜80%の容量の液体が注入されて注液領域61が形成されており、注液領域61の上方にはスペースSが形成される。外枠体57の第2面52には、第6面56側の突出部52aに中央に開口80aを有する蓋体80が螺着されており、開口80aには、負極体66の端部66aが挿通される。蓋体80を取り外すことによって、外枠体57の内部に液体を注入、排出することができる。

通気システムは、外枠体57の第1面51の外面に位置する通気用及び貯水用のタンク62と、タンク62に連結されるシリコーンゴム等の軟質部材から形成された通気管63とを有する。タンク62は第1面51に設けられた開口(取付孔)にゴム製の止水シール64を介して挿入される延出部65を有する。タンク62は延出部65を軸として外枠体57に対して360度回転可能に取り付けられており、使用を重ねることによって延出部65と止水シール64との摺動が繰り返されて後者が摩耗したときには、それを交換することができる。タンク62は、通気管63からタンク62に流れ込んできた発生ガスを排気するための通気孔67と、タンク62内に流れ込んできた液体を排出するための排水孔68とを有し、排水孔68は栓69で封止される。タンク62内には、通気孔67と排水孔68との間に分離壁70が設けられており、分離壁70の排水孔68側に通気管63に浸入してタンク62に移動した液体71が貯められる。また、タンク62の内壁と分離壁70の先端部との間にはクリアランス72が形成されており、タンク62の排水孔68側には、金属製のウエイト73が配置される。上記のとおり、タンク62は外枠体57に回転可能に連結されているところ、ウエイト73が排水孔68側に位置することから、図示するように外枠体57の第5面55が上方に位置する態様から上下を逆にして第6面56が上方に位置するように配置したとしても、ウエイト73の自重によってタンク62が回転して排水孔68側が下方に位置する。

通気管63の他端63bには、ゴム製又はプラスチック製のフロート75がその中央部を貫通するジョイント76を介して連結される。フロート75内は中空であって、通気管63の他端63b側には金属製のウエイト77が配置されている。ウエイト77は、その質量がフロート75の約半分が液面WLから露出するように調整されている。ジョイント76のフロート75を貫通する側の端部は先細状であって、開口端76aを有する。本実施形態において、互いに連結されるタンク62、通気管63及びジョイント76は別体から構成されているが、それらの一部又は全部が一体に成形されていてもよい。

図11に示すとおり、かかる構成を有する水電池10において、所要量の液体が外枠体57内に注入されることによって、フロート75が注液域61の液面上に浮き上がる。また、注入された液体が酸化反応触媒として作用して正極体60A,60Bと負極体66との間にイオン化反応及びそれによる電位差が生じ、所要の起電力が発生する。外枠体57は所要の大きさを有するものであるから、通常の単三形の水電池に比べて多量の起電力を発生させることができる。ただし、水電池10やその構成部材の大きさ、形状等を調整することによって、単三形等の市販の水電池として使用することもできる。

発電してから一定時間経過した場合には、発電時の電気反応によって、外枠体57内にはガスが発生し、それによって外枠体57内の内圧が上昇し、その内部の空気は比較的に高圧となる。外枠体57は、強度を考慮して金属や合金等の硬質材料で形成することもできるが、コスト面や水電池10を使用する電気磁気機器の種類等を考慮してアルミやプラスチック等から形成することが好ましい。したがって、外枠体57をプラスチック等で形成した場合には、内部に充満した発生ガスの圧力によって外枠体57の一部にひび割れが生じて内部の水が漏れ出たりするおそれがある。かかる問題を解消するために、従来の水電池では、発生ガスを外部に放出するための排気口が水電池本体に設けられていた。しかし、排気口から発生ガスとともに内部の電解液が漏れ出て起電力の低下や漏電を生じるおそれがあった。

本実施形態の場合には、フロート75が液面上に浮き上がってジョイント76の開口端76aがスペースS内に位置していることから、開口端76aからスペースS内の発生ガスの一部が通気管63内に流入してタンク62内に移動し、クリアランス72を通過して外部に放出される。それにより、外枠体57内の圧力を下げることができるので、発電時間の経過とともに多量に発生ガスが発生しても、それによる内圧によって外枠体57がひび割れ等するのを防止することができる。また、水電池10は、負極体66が蓋体80を介して外枠体57に挿抜可能に挿入されているので、一定時間発電して起電力が低下したときに、負極体66と外枠体57内の水とを新たなものに交換することによって、再び所要量の起電力を発生させることができる。図示していないが、正極体60A,60Bについても、第3及び第4面53,54の取付孔に正極体60A,60Bを取り外し可能に取り付けることによって、負極体66と同様に、起電力が低下したときに新たなものに交換してもよい。

図12を参照すると、第3面53が配置面40に配置される態様の場合には、2枚の正極体60A,60B(アノード板)のうちの1枚の正極体60Aのみが注液域61内に位置して負極体66との間に起電力を発生させ、一方、正極体60BはスペースSに位置するので、図9に示すような2枚の正極体が注液域61内に位置する場合に比して電気化学的面積が半減し、比較的に小さな起電力を生じることになる。また、図13に示すとおり、第5面55側が配置面40に当接する配置態様のときには、負極体66がスペースSに位置して水と接触しない状態となるので、電気化学反応が生じず、起電力が発生しない。したがって、このように、配置面40に対する水電池10の位置(向き)を変えることによって、起電力を生じさせたり(オン状態)、起電力を半減させたり、起電力を発生しない状態(オフ状態)とすることができ、外枠体57の該面に電源を切り替えるための操作ボタン等は不要である。また、図9〜13を参照すると、外枠体57内のフロート75は、水電池10が配置面40に対してどのような向きで配置されていても、ウエイト77の位置する側が液面WL下に位置するように回転して浮上がりかかる状態が維持されるので、常にスペースS内の発生ガスを外部に放出させることができる。
