Description
The present invention relates to an optical module that transmits or receives an optical signal.
As a conventional optical module, an optical module described in
Then, the core portion is formed by patterning using a photomask in the groove of the substrate, and then the cladding portion is formed by patterning with the opening width of the photomask widened.
However, the optical module has a problem that the number of steps increases because the step of forming the core portion of the internal waveguide and the step of forming the cladding portion must be performed in separate steps.
The present invention has been made to solve the above-described problems, and an object of the present invention is to provide an optical module that can rationally omit the step of forming the cladding portion of the internal waveguide.
In order to solve the above problems, the present invention provides a substrate in which at least one first groove and a second groove for placing an optical fiber deeper than the first groove are continuously formed on the surface. And a core portion of an internal waveguide provided in the first groove of the substrate, an optical path changing mirror portion provided at a tip portion of the first groove, and the substrate so as to face the mirror portion. And an optical element that emits an optical signal to the core part of the internal waveguide through the mirror part or receives an optical signal from the core part of the internal waveguide through the mirror part. The fiber core portion is filled between the light emitting surface or the light receiving surface of the optical element and the substrate, and is positioned and fixed by an optical adhesive in the second groove to protect the optical element. Is optically coupled to the core of the internal waveguide An optical module comprising: an optical fiber comprising: a cladding portion of the internal waveguide, the optical adhesive for fixing the optical fiber, or the underfill material for protecting the optical element. It is formed using at least one, and the optical adhesive or the underfill material provides an optical module characterized by having a refractive index lower than that of the core portion of the internal waveguide.
The clad portion of the internal waveguide can be configured by a combination of the optical adhesive and the underfill material.
In order to prevent the optical adhesive in the first groove used as the cladding portion of the internal waveguide from mixing with the underfill material, the light transmissive partition portion having substantially the same refractive index as that of the cladding portion is provided in the first groove. It can also be set as the structure which forms.
A partition portion is formed of the same material as the core portion in the first groove so that the optical adhesive in the first groove used as the cladding portion of the internal waveguide and the underfill material are not mixed. It can also be configured.
According to the present invention, in the step of forming the internal waveguide on the substrate, it is only necessary to form the core part in the first groove, and the clad part protects the optical adhesive or the optical element for fixing the optical fiber. Therefore, at least one of the underfill materials can be formed by filling the first groove. Therefore, the clad portion can be formed simultaneously with the optical adhesive filling step, or the clad portion can be formed simultaneously with the underfill material filling step, so that the step of forming the clad portion of the internal waveguide can be omitted.

In FIG. 1, an optical module includes a first substrate (mount substrate) 1 that is a substrate on the light emitting side, a first substrate (mount substrate) 3 that is a substrate on the light receiving side, and the
In order to avoid the influence of heat during mounting and the influence of stress due to the usage environment, the

The
On the surface (upper surface) of the
発光素子12aとして、本実施形態では、半導体レーザである面発光レーザ〔VCSEL(Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser)〕が採用されている。
In the present embodiment, a surface emitting laser (VCSEL (Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser)) that is a semiconductor laser is employed as the
The
As shown in FIGS. 2 and 3, the surface of the
At the tip of the

A
例えばシリコーンゴムやシリコンゲル等のJCR(ジャンクションコーティングレジン)が好適である。

Returning to FIG. 1, the first substrate 3 on the light receiving side will be described. The basic structure of the first substrate 3 on the light receiving side is the same as that of the
The
Next, the
As shown in FIG. 1, the
At the bottom of the
On the upper side of the
As the
In this way, the tip side portion of the fiber clad
On the other hand, as shown in FIGS. 2 and 3, in the
Then, in a state where the
In the filling process of the
4 and 5, in the
Then, with the
In the filling process of the
In the
Therefore, since the clad

Specifically, as shown in FIG. 6A, which is a cross-sectional view taken along line II-II in FIG. 7B, the space between the
Then, as shown in FIG. 7A, which is a cross-sectional view taken along the line III-III of FIG. 7B, in the filling process of the
In the
That is, the
Here, the filling portion of the
8 and 9 show the
In the
A method for forming the
As shown in FIG. 10 (a), two chip-shaped
Alternatively, as shown in FIG. 11 (a), a resin for the
Furthermore, as shown in FIG. 12A, it is also possible to form the
Thus, if the
In the
Next, as shown in FIGS. 12C and 12D, the
In this manner, the
As shown in FIG. 13A, the
Further, in the fitting of the
As described above, in the optical module of the present embodiment, at least one first groove and a second groove for placing an optical fiber deeper than the first groove are continuously formed on the surface. A substrate, a core portion of an internal waveguide provided in the first groove of the substrate, an optical path changing mirror portion provided at a tip portion of the first groove, and the mirror portion so as to face the mirror portion. An optical element mounted on the surface of a substrate and emitting an optical signal to the core part of the internal waveguide through the mirror part or receiving an optical signal from the core part of the internal waveguide through the mirror part An underfill material that is filled between the light emitting surface or the light receiving surface of the optical element and the substrate, and is positioned and fixed by an optical adhesive in the second groove, and is a fiber core. Part is optically connected to the core part of the internal waveguide An optical module comprising a coupling optical fiber, wherein the clad portion of the internal waveguide has the optical adhesive for fixing the optical fiber, or the underfill material for protecting the optical element. The optical adhesive or the underfill material has a refractive index lower than that of the core portion of the internal waveguide.
According to this, in the step of forming the internal waveguide on the substrate, it is only necessary to form the core part in the first groove, and the clad part protects the optical adhesive for fixing the optical fiber or the optical element. At least one of the underfill materials can be formed by filling the first groove. Therefore, the clad portion can be formed simultaneously with the optical adhesive filling step, or the clad portion can be formed simultaneously with the underfill material filling step, so that the step of forming the clad portion of the internal waveguide can be omitted.
The clad portion of the internal waveguide can be configured by a combination of the optical adhesive and the underfill material.
According to this, the optical fiber side becomes the clad part of the optical adhesive, and the optical element side becomes the clad part of the underfill material. Therefore, the optical fiber can be securely fixed with a hard optical adhesive on the optical fiber side, and the optical element can be protected with a soft underfill material on the optical element side.
In order to prevent the optical adhesive in the first groove used as the cladding portion of the internal waveguide from mixing with the underfill material, the light transmissive partition portion having substantially the same refractive index as that of the cladding portion is provided in the first groove. It can also be set as the structure which forms.
According to this, the optical adhesive in the first groove used as the cladding portion of the internal waveguide and the underfill material are separated by the partition portion, so that resins having different characteristics do not mix with each other. Therefore, the optical reliability is not affected, and there is no possibility of peeling at the mixed portion.
A partition portion is formed of the same material as the core portion in the first groove so that the optical adhesive in the first groove used as the cladding portion of the internal waveguide and the underfill material are not mixed. It can also be configured.
