Claims (9)
- 液晶表示装置であって、
第1の基板と、
第2の基板と、
前記第1の基板上に配置され、それぞれ直交する第1の透過軸と第1の反射軸とを有し、及び前記第1の透過軸に平行な振動面を有する直線偏光を透過し且つ前記第1の反射軸に平行な振動面を有する直線偏光を反射する反射型偏光板と、
前記第2の基板上に配置され、第2の透過軸を有し、及び前記第2の透過軸に平行な振動面を有する直線偏光を透過する偏光板と、
前記第1及び第2の基板間に挟持され、電圧印加によって、複屈折性を利用して入射光の偏光方向と液晶分子の長軸方向が角度を持って傾く第1のモードと、複屈折性を利用せずに入射光の偏光方向と液晶分子の長軸方向が垂直となる第2のモードを有する垂直配向型の液晶層とを有し、
前記垂直配向型の液晶層への電圧印加によって、視認側から視認したときの光透過率が高い明表示と視認側から視認したときの光透過率が低い暗表示とを切り替え、
前記垂直配向型の液晶層を前記第2モードに設定して、明表示を行うことを特徴とする液晶表示装置。 - 前記偏光板の第2の透過軸を通過して前記垂直配向型の液晶層に入射した外光を前記反射型偏光板で反射させ、再び前記垂直配向型の液晶層及び前記偏光板外に出射させることによって明表示を行う、請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記第1の透過軸と前記第2の透過軸とは、ほぼ直交に配置されている、請求項2に記載の液晶表示装置。
- さらに、前記反射型偏光板の外側に設けられた補助光源を有し、
前記補助光源をOFFさせた状態で、前記垂直配向型の液晶層を前記第2モードに設定する請求項2又は3に記載の液晶表示装置。 - さらに、前記反射型偏光板の外側に設けられた補助光源を有し、
前記補助光源をONさせた状態で、前記垂直配向型の液晶層を前記第2モードに設定し、前記補助光源からの光を前記反射型偏光板の第1の透過軸で透過し、前記垂直配向型の液晶層に入射した光を前記偏光板の第2の透過軸を透過して視認側に出射させることによって明表示を行う請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。 - 前記第1の透過軸と前記第2の透過軸とは、ほぼ平行に配置されている、請求項5に記載の液晶表示装置。
- さらに、前記反射型偏光板の外側に設けられた補助光源を有し、
前記反射型偏光板と前記補助光源との間に配置され、一部領域の光を吸収する光吸収層を有する請求項1〜6の何れか一項に記載の液晶表示装置。 - さらに、前記反射型偏光板の外側に設けられた補助光源を有し、
前記反射型偏光板と前記補助光源との間に配置され、可視光領域の一部の光を吸収する光吸収層を有する請求項1〜6の何れか一項に記載の液晶表示装置。 - さらに、前記反射型偏光板の外側に設けられた補助光源を有し、
前記補助光源には、可視光領域の一部の光を反射する反射層が備えられている、請求項1〜6の何れか一項に記載の液晶表示装置。
