Description
The present invention relates to a technical field of, for example, a reflective liquid crystal device and an electronic apparatus including such a liquid crystal device.
In a liquid crystal device, for example, a liquid crystal is placed in a predetermined alignment state between a pair of substrates constituting a liquid crystal panel that is a display panel, and a predetermined voltage is applied to the liquid crystal for each pixel portion formed in an image display region, for example. Thus, gradation is displayed by modulating the light by changing the orientation and order in the liquid crystal.
An example of such a liquid crystal device is a reflective liquid crystal device (see, for example, Patent Document 1). In the reflective liquid crystal device, external light enters the liquid crystal layer through the front substrate, is reflected by the reflector formed on the rear substrate, and then passes again through the liquid crystal layer and the front substrate. Visible. In particular, in
However, in such a reflective liquid crystal device provided with a scattering layer, the incident angle of light to the liquid crystal panel (or the incident angle of light to the scattering layer) is an important factor. More specifically, since the brightness of the display varies due to the change in the incident angle of light depending on the direction of the light source, etc., the user can move the liquid crystal panel from various directions according to the incident light angle, etc. You might see it. Therefore, development of a liquid crystal device with a wider viewing angle is eagerly desired.
The present invention has been made in view of, for example, the above-described conventional problems, and an object thereof is to provide, for example, a reflective liquid crystal device and an electronic apparatus having a wide viewing angle.
(Liquid crystal device)
In order to solve the above problems, a liquid crystal device according to the present invention is provided on a liquid crystal layer sandwiched between a first substrate and a second substrate, on the liquid crystal layer side of the first substrate, and on the second substrate. a reflective liquid crystal panel and a reflective layer for reflecting light incident on the liquid crystal layer from the substrate side to the second substrate side, so as to face provided et al is in the second substrate, it is reflected in the reflective layer A light diffusion layer for diffusing light, a viewing angle compensation layer provided between the second substrate and the light diffusion layer for compensating a viewing angle of the liquid crystal panel, and the liquid crystal layer of the light diffusion layer. A retardation plate provided on the opposite side and imparting a predetermined amount of optical phase difference to incident light; and a polarizing plate provided on the opposite side of the retardation plate from the liquid crystal layer .
According to the liquid crystal device of the present invention, the electrodes formed on the first substrate indicate the alignment state of the liquid crystal molecules sandwiched between a pair of substrates constituting the liquid crystal panel (that is, the first substrate and the second substrate). It can be changed by an electric field generated by a potential difference between each of (for example, a pixel electrode described later) and an electrode formed on the second substrate (for example, a common electrode described later). In particular, in the liquid crystal device of the present invention, a reflective layer is provided on the first substrate. The reflective layer is preferably provided on the liquid crystal layer side of the first substrate, but may be provided on the opposite side of the first substrate from the liquid crystal layer. Therefore, the liquid crystal device of the present invention operates as a so-called reflective (or transflective) liquid crystal device. Therefore, according to the liquid crystal device of the present invention, the light emitted from the light source (for example, the sun or the lighting panel) enters the liquid crystal panel (that is, the liquid crystal layer) from the second substrate side, and then is reflected by the reflective layer. Reflected toward the second substrate side. Thereby, the user visually recognizes the image displayed on the liquid crystal device when the reflected light is visually recognized by the user.
In the present invention, the light diffusion layer is provided so as to face the second substrate (that is, so as to face the second substrate side of the liquid crystal panel). The light diffusion layer is a layer having light diffusibility. Such a light diffusion layer, for example, diffuses light incident from one incident angle and transmits (or backscatters) light incident from another incident angle different from the one incident angle. It may have sex. Alternatively, such a light diffusion layer may have a light diffusibility that diffuses incident light in a desired manner or in any manner. For this reason, the light reflected in the reflection layer is visually recognized by the user after being diffused in the light diffusion layer. Thereby, a bright liquid crystal device with a wide viewing angle can be realized.
In addition, in the present invention, a viewing angle compensation layer is provided between the second substrate and the light diffusion layer (that is, facing the second substrate side of the liquid crystal panel). The viewing angle compensation layer is a layer having a function of compensating the viewing angle of the liquid crystal device. Typically, the viewing angle compensation layer is, for example, a retardation plate that gives a predetermined retardation to transmitted light. Such a viewing angle compensation layer compensates the viewing angle so that an appropriate or desired viewing angle is realized as the entire liquid crystal device in consideration of characteristics of the liquid crystal panel (for example, an operation mode and a viewing angle). It preferably has a function. As a result, the light reflected by the reflective layer is appropriately compensated for by the viewing angle compensation layer so that the viewing angle of the liquid crystal device is an appropriate or desired viewing angle (in other words, a wide viewing angle). . For this reason, a liquid crystal device having a relatively wide viewing angle can be realized. Thus, even when the user needs to view the liquid crystal panel from various directions depending on the incident angle of light on the liquid crystal panel (or the incident angle of light on the light diffusion layer), the liquid crystal device can be viewed. Sex can be maintained. Alternatively, the liquid crystal panel is viewed from a predetermined angle corresponding to the optimal incident angle due to the optimal setting of the incident angle of light to the liquid crystal panel (or the incident angle of light to the light diffusion layer). Even when necessary, the visibility of the liquid crystal device can be maintained.
More preferably, the reflective liquid crystal panel preferably has a wide viewing angle as a single unit. By using such a liquid crystal panel together with a viewing angle compensation layer, a liquid crystal device having a wider viewing angle can be realized. Note that the “wide viewing angle” here is a broad meaning that means a wide viewing angle compared to the viewing angle of a TN mode liquid crystal panel, for example, but typically ECB mode and VA mode. This means that the viewing angle is equivalent or higher.
In addition , since no light is diffused between the liquid crystal layer and the viewing angle compensation layer, the viewing angle compensation layer reliably compensates for the change in phase difference that occurs when the liquid crystal layer is viewed from an oblique direction. Can do.
In one aspect of the liquid crystal device of the present invention, the retardation plate gives a quarter-wave phase difference .
According to this aspect, even if light scattered backward by the light diffusion layer is generated, it is absorbed by the polarizing plate and the quarter-wave plate, so that the contrast can be kept high.
In one aspect of the liquid crystal device of the present invention, the liquid crystal panel is an ECB mode liquid crystal panel, and the viewing angle compensation layer exhibits birefringence in each of an in- plane direction and a thickness direction of the second substrate. It includes a first phase difference plate.
According to this embodiment, by using a liquid crystal panel and the first retardation plate ECB mode, it is possible to preferably receive the aforementioned various effects. More specifically, in an ECB mode liquid crystal panel, when a voltage is applied to the liquid crystal layer, some liquid crystal molecules may not rise completely in the thickness direction, but liquid crystal molecules that do not rise completely in the thickness direction. (i.e., the liquid crystal molecules lying) according to the liquid crystal molecules to drive the birefringence first compensated and the thickness direction by the plane direction of the birefringent retardation plate (i.e., standing the liquid crystal molecules) by birefringence to compensate by a first thickness direction of the birefringent retardation plate, it is possible to realize a liquid crystal device with a wide viewing angle.
In an aspect of the viewing angle compensation layer as described above is a liquid crystal device comprising a first retardation plate, the first phase difference plate, the refractive index of the in-plane direction nx, a ny, the refractive index of the thickness direction It may be configured to be a biaxial phase difference plate or an O plate satisfying nx>ny> nz when the three-dimensional refractive index when nz is nz .
With this configuration, a biaxial retardation plate having a three-dimensional refractive index of nx>ny> nz and an O plate having a function similar to that of the biaxial retardation plate by utilizing a hybrid alignment of liquid crystal molecules ( for example, by using a so-called NR or NH) as the first phase difference plate, it is possible to preferably receive the aforementioned various effects.
In another aspect of the liquid crystal device of the present invention, the liquid crystal panel is a VA mode liquid crystal panel, and the viewing angle compensation layer does not exhibit birefringence in the in- plane direction of the second substrate and in the thickness direction. It includes a second retardation film exhibiting birefringence.
According to this embodiment, by using a liquid crystal panel and a second retardation plate of VA mode, it is possible to preferably receive the aforementioned various effects. That is, in the liquid crystal panel of a VA mode, although the liquid crystal molecules when no voltage is applied is substantially perpendicular to the first and second substrates, the thickness of the birefringence due to the substantially perpendicular liquid crystal molecules second retardation plate By compensating for the birefringence in the direction, a liquid crystal device with a wide viewing angle can be realized.
In an aspect of the viewing angle compensation layer as described above is a liquid crystal device comprising a second phase difference plate, the second retardation plate, the refractive index of the in-plane direction nx, a ny, the refractive index of the thickness direction Alternatively, the negative C plate may have a three-dimensional refractive index satisfying nx = ny> nz, where nz is nz .
According to this structure, by three-dimensional refractive index is used Rene Gatibu C plate such as nx = ny> nz as the second phase difference plate, it is possible to preferably receive the aforementioned various effects.
(Electronics)
In order to solve the above problems, an electronic apparatus of the present invention includes the above-described liquid crystal device of the present invention (including various aspects thereof).
According to the electronic apparatus of the present invention, since the liquid crystal device of the present invention described above (or various aspects thereof) is provided, the same effects as the various effects enjoyed by the liquid crystal device of the present invention described above can be enjoyed. . That is, a direct view type display device (for example, a television, a mobile phone, an electronic notebook, a portable audio player, a word processor, a digital camera, a viewfinder) that can enjoy the same effects as those obtained by the liquid crystal device of the present invention described above. Various electronic devices such as a type or monitor direct-view type video recorder, workstation, videophone, POS terminal, touch panel, etc. can be realized.

つまり、視野角補償層500は、3次元屈折率がnx>ny>nz(但し、nx及びnyは面内方向の屈折率を示し且つnzは厚み方向の屈折率を示す)となる2軸位相差板である。
The viewing
During the operation of the
Thereafter, the light reflected by the reflective layer 80 (reflected light) passes through the
Thereafter, the reflected light transmitted through the viewing
Thus, in this embodiment, since the
In addition, in this embodiment, the viewing
In addition, in the present embodiment, a retardation plate 300 (for example, a quarter wavelength plate) is provided between the
In the above description, an example in which a biaxial retardation plate is used as the viewing
In the above description, an example in which the ECB
