Description
The present invention relates to an inkjet head and a coating apparatus including the inkjet head.
Various types of ink jet heads have been proposed, and one of them is a shear mode type ink jet head (see
In this shear mode type ink jet head, due to crosstalk between adjacent ink channels, the amount of ink droplets or droplets ejected from the nozzle corresponding to the ink channel at the end when continuously driven There is a problem that the speed decreases.
As a system for performing printing and application by an ink jet method at high speed, a system in which a plurality of shear mode type ink jet heads are arranged in a line and fixed, and a print or an object to be printed or applied in one pass is considered. For example, a roll-like printed material or a coated material can be continuously processed.
At this time, the problem is uneven print density due to crosstalk occurring at the end of the head. Since crosstalk is unavoidable structurally at the end of the head, an abnormal density at the joint portion of the head becomes a coating defect fixed in a streak, and the quality of the printed matter is significantly impaired.
FIG. 14 shows a shear mode type inkjet head having 32 ink channels having the same side wall width, and a common voltage pulse is applied so that all ink channels are divided into three periods in a time-division manner (every two ink channels). This is an example of an appropriate amount distribution of liquid when driven, and it can be seen that the appropriate amount of liquid is significantly reduced in one
The above prior art is known as a countermeasure against crosstalk. However, since the driving method is complicated, there is a problem that the driving circuit becomes complicated and the cost increases. On the other hand, the ink channel positioned at the end of the head has a problem that a sufficient countermeasure against crosstalk cannot be taken because there is almost no adjacent portion outside the ink channel.
The present invention can improve the quality of printed matter by improving the drop in the amount of ink droplets from the ink channel at the end of a single head due to crosstalk despite the use of a simple drive circuit.

Here, as is apparent from the figure, the length of the ink channel in the arrangement direction of the ink channel is the width of the ink channel, and the length in the longitudinal direction of the two directions perpendicular to the arrangement direction is the length of the ink channel. The other length is defined as the depth of the ink channel.
As shown in FIGS. 5 and 9, the

The number of ink channels of the
Various embodiments other than those shown in FIG. 9 can be used. FIG. 10 shows an example in which four dummy channels that do not discharge ink are provided. The dummy channel provided adjacent to the ink channel at the end applies a voltage pulse to the metal electrode on the side wall that partitions the dummy channel adjacent to the ink channel located at the end, and the side wall is also driven to drive the ink at both ends. Although it is for discharging ink more stably from the channel, it is preferable to provide a dummy channel on the outside of the channel because the influence of crosstalk of the ink channel located at the end can be reduced.
FIG. 11 shows three ink channels that are continuous from one ink channel of two ink channels that are located at both ends toward the ink channel that is centrally located, and continuous from the other ink channel toward the ink channel that is centrally located. The width B2 of the side wall on the side in the arrangement direction in the three ink channels is relatively smaller than the width B1 of the side wall on the side in the arrangement direction in the ink channel located at the center. In addition, the width of the side wall on the side in the arrangement direction of the other ink channels is made equal to B1. Ink channels that are separated by two ink channels between multiple ink channels are combined into one set, all ink channels are divided into three sets, and the ink ejection operation is time-divided for each set. This is particularly effective in the case of sequentially carrying out the above, and the effect of the present invention is more remarkably exhibited. This is because, as shown in FIG. 26 described above, when the driving is divided into three groups, the amount of droplets decreases in the three channels at each end that are positioned at both ends in each driving.

Next, the discharge operation will be described.
When a voltage pulse is applied from the voltage pulse generating means 101 to the

FIG. 6 shows voltage pulses in the droplet discharge method according to the embodiment of the present invention. In FIG. 6, the horizontal axis represents time, and the vertical axis represents drive voltage.
(1) In the state shown in FIG. 5A, the
(2) When the potential is returned to 0 after the lapse of PW time from the first application of P1 (P2), the
Subsequently, a contraction pulse (negative voltage) having a pulse width of 2 PW made of a rectangular wave is applied. First, due to the fall of the contraction pulse (P3), as shown in FIG. 5C, the
(3) Further, when 2PW time elapses, the potential is returned to 0 (P4), and the
By a series of these operations, a part of the ink in the
Such a droplet discharge method is a droplet discharge method based on a so-called DRR (Draw-Release-Reinforce) method, and the pulse width PW of the expansion pulse greatly affects the discharge force of the ink droplet, and this pulse width is close to 1AL. The ink droplet ejection force (ejection speed) is maximized when the two coincide.
Note that AL (Acoustic Length) is ½ of the acoustic resonance period of the ink channel, as described above. This AL measured the speed of ink droplets ejected by applying a rectangular wave pulse to the
A pulse is a rectangular wave having a constant voltage peak value. When 0V is 0% and a peak voltage is 100%, the pulse width is the start of rising or falling of the voltage from 0V. Is defined as the time between 10% of 10% and 10% of the start of falling from the peak voltage or 10% of rising. Furthermore, the rectangular wave here refers to a waveform in which both the rise time and fall time between 10% and 90% of the voltage are within ½ of AL, preferably within ¼. .
It is preferable to use a rectangular wave as the voltage pulse because the ejection efficiency is improved and the pulse width can be easily set.
In the voltage pulse of FIG. 6, it is preferable that the ratio of the expansion pulse drive voltage Von (V) and the contraction pulse drive voltage Voff (V) is | Von |> | Voff |. Thus, the relationship | Von |> | Voff | has an effect of promoting the supply of ink into the ink channel, and is particularly preferable when high-frequency driving is performed with high-viscosity ink. Note that the reference voltage of the voltage Von and the voltage Voff is not always zero. The voltage Von and the voltage Voff are respectively differential voltages from the reference voltage. Further, it is more preferable that | Von | / | Voff | = 2.
In such a shear mode type ink jet head, the deformation of the
When an inkjet head having a plurality of

Such a three-cycle ejection operation will be described with reference to FIG. 7 in the case of driving with the voltage pulse of FIG. FIG. 7 shows a total of nine
At the time of ink ejection, first, the voltage pulse of FIG. 6 is applied to the electrodes of each channel of the A set, the electrodes of the adjacent channels are grounded, and ink droplets are ejected from the nozzles of each channel of the A set.

Next, the operation of the inkjet head of this embodiment will be described.
(Conventional example)
FIG. 12 is a cross-sectional view of an ink channel row of a conventional inkjet head in which the side wall width B1 of each ink channel is equal. In this head, the density of the ink channels is 180 dpi (141 μm pitch), the depth D of each ink channel is 325 μm, B1 is 59 μm, the width W is 82 μm, the length L is 6.5 mm, and each nozzle is on the ink ejection side. The case where the diameter of the opening is 39 μm, the diameter of the opening on the ink channel side is 50 μm, and water-based ink is used as the ink will be described.
The ink channel AL was 11.0 μs.
The evaluation of the head is based on the voltage pulse shown in FIG. 6, and the ratio (| Von | / | Voff |) of the driving voltage Von of the rectangular wave expansion pulse to the driving voltage Voff of the rectangular wave contraction pulse is 2, and the expansion pulse The voltage at which the drive voltage Von is 14.5 V, the expansion pulse width PW is 11.0 μs, which is the ink channel AL, and the
A decrease in the appropriate amount of liquid was observed in three channels at each end. The ratio of the droplet amount of the end nozzle to the droplet amount of the center nozzle was 0.90, and the droplet amount of the end nozzle was greatly reduced.
There is a method of optimizing the drive voltage and voltage pulse width for each channel in order to make the droplet volume at the center and the edge uniform with the conventional head, but it is necessary to prepare a drive circuit for each channel There is a problem that costs.
Next, for this conventional head, nine types of heads with ink channel depths changed to 200 μm, 310 μm, 360 μm and side wall widths of 54 μm, 59 μm, 64 μm were produced, and the same drive pulse was applied to each head. Then, the amount of droplets was measured. As a result of the measurement, it was found that the droplet amount is related to the width of the side wall of the ink channel.
Table 1 shows the measurement results of the appropriate amount of liquid for each head. The appropriate amount of liquid is expressed as a relative value when a head having a side wall width of 64 μm is 1.
As is apparent from Table 1, the amount of droplets tends to increase as the side wall width decreases. Therefore, by using these relationships, it can be used as a guide for setting the width of the side wall of the ink channel at both ends with respect to the width of the side wall of the ink channel at the center.
In this way, the degree of change in the width of the side wall of the ink channel may be adjusted so that the droplet volume distribution becomes uniform based on the above-described droplet volume distribution and the measurement results shown in Table 1.
(Embodiment example)
Next, the ink jet head shown in FIG. 11 is located at the center from three ink channels that are continuous from one ink channel of the two ink channels located at both ends toward the ink channel that is located at the center and the other ink channel. The ink is produced in the same manner as the conventional head except that B2 of three ink channels continuous toward the ink channel is 54 μm and B1 of the ink channel located at the center and other ink channels is 59 μm. The case where it went is demonstrated.
The AL of the ink channel was 11.0 μs as before. When the same common voltage pulse as before was applied to each ink channel and the amount of droplets discharged from each nozzle of all ink channels was measured, the ratio of the minimum droplet amount to the maximum droplet amount was approximately 1. It was confirmed that the distribution was uniform.
In the conventional inkjet head of FIG. 12, assuming that the nozzle pitch is P1 and the ink channel pitch is P2, P1 = P2, and each nozzle is arranged at the center in the width W direction of the corresponding ink channel. However, when the width W of each ink channel is the same in the ink jet head of FIG. 11, the pitch P2 between the three channels at each end is reduced by (B1-B2), and in particular, the channel in the two ink channels at both ends. The position is shifted to the center side by 2 (B1-B2). Since the nozzle pitch P1 needs to be constant, it is preferable that the position of the nozzle does not reach the side wall due to the influence of the shift of the channel position. That is, in the present embodiment, when the ink channel width is W and the diameter of the opening on the ink channel side of the nozzle is N, the following
B2 was set so as to satisfy the above.
When the side wall of the piezoelectric material is deformed in the shear mode, the smaller the side wall width, the larger the displacement amount, and the more efficiently the deformation can be performed.
Therefore, when the width of the side wall is reduced, the amount of displacement increases, the volume displacement of the ink channel increases, and the pressure change for ejecting ink droplets from the nozzles increases. As described above, in the ink jet head of this embodiment, the width of the side wall varies depending on the ink channel, and specifically, the width of the side wall in the ink channel arrangement direction side of the ink channel is reduced by a suitable amount of ink. By making the end portion smaller than the central portion, it is possible to compensate for a decrease in the appropriate amount of liquid at the end portion.
As described above, in the present embodiment, the width of the side wall on the ink channel arrangement direction end side in the ink channel is the center of the two ink channels positioned at both ends in the arrangement direction of the plurality of ink channels that eject ink. Since the discharge efficiency of the ink channels at both ends is higher than that of the central portion because the ink channel is smaller than the ink channel located at the center, it is possible to compensate for the drop in the amount of ink droplets discharged from the end nozzles and to perform high-quality printing. Can do. This makes it possible to use a simple drive circuit that applies a common voltage pulse to each ink channel.
