Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a technical field of an electro-optical device such as a liquid crystal display device and an electronic apparatus including the electro-optical device such as a mobile phone and a portable information terminal.
In this type of electro-optical device, the ambient brightness is detected by the light detection means, and the brightness of the display image is changed according to the detected brightness, for example, so that the display image can be easily viewed. . For example, in Patent Document 1, a reflective layer is formed under a photoelectric conversion element that is an example of a light detection unit, and ambient light is reflected by the reflection layer, so that sufficient ambient light is incident on the photoelectric conversion element. Techniques to ensure are proposed.
On the other hand, for example, light from a light-emitting unit such as a backlight may enter the light detection unit, which may cause a malfunction. For this reason, for example,
This type of electro-optical device is provided with an opening for the light detection means in order to allow ambient light to enter the light detection means. Then, for example, there is a technical problem that light from a light emitting unit such as a backlight may leak from the opening and the appearance of the electro-optical device may be deteriorated. In order to solve this problem, it is conceivable to form a light shielding film instead of or in addition to the reflective film in the technique disclosed in Patent Document 1, but in order to form the light shielding film, the number of manufacturing steps increases. There is a technical problem. The technique disclosed in
SUMMARY An advantage of some aspects of the invention is that it provides an electro-optical device and an electronic apparatus that can suppress light leakage without increasing the number of steps.
In order to solve the above problems, an electro-optical device according to the present invention is disposed on one of the pair of substrates, the electro-optical material sandwiched between the pair of substrates, and the light detection. A pair of light detection means for detecting at least a part of the light incident on the area for use, and so as to exclude the electro-optic material from at least a part of the area for light detection when viewed in plan on the substrate. And an exclusion member disposed between the substrates.
According to the electro-optical device of the present invention, for example, an electro-optical material such as liquid crystal is sandwiched between a pair of substrates. Note that an organic alignment film that has been rubbed in a predetermined direction or an inorganic alignment film made of an inorganic material such as SiO or SiO 2 is provided on at least one of the pair of substrates facing the electro-optic material. doing. Similarly, an organic alignment film or an inorganic alignment film may be provided on the side facing the electro-optical material on the other substrate.
For example, photodetection means such as a photosensor having a MOS (Metal Oxide Semiconductor) type transistor structure or a PIN (p-intrinsic-n) diode structure is arranged in a photodetection region on one of a pair of substrates, At least a part of the light incident on the light detection region is detected. Note that “on one substrate” means “on the surface of one substrate facing the electro-optical material”.
The exclusion member is disposed between the pair of substrates so as to exclude the electro-optical material from at least a part of the light detection region when viewed in plan on the substrate. That is, the exclusion member is disposed between the pair of substrates so that the electro-optical material is excluded from at least a part of the upper layer side of the light detection means.
When the electro-optical material is, for example, a liquid crystal (that is, when the electro-optical device is a liquid crystal device), typically, the pair of polarizing plates are in a crossed Nicols state so as to sandwich the pair of substrates. It is arranged with. Then, of the light incident from one polarizing plate of the pair of polarizing plates, the light passing through the portion from which the electro-optical material is excluded cannot be emitted from the other polarizing plate. Accordingly, light leakage from the opening for the light detection means can be suppressed. On the other hand, since the ambient light can reach the light detection means, it has no influence on the detection of the ambient light by the light detection means. Furthermore, more generally, light that is not limited to liquid crystal, but is prevented from being attenuated due to the presence of the electro-optic material for some reason by receiving light propagating through the space from which the electro-optic material is excluded. Can be received.
Such an exclusion member is a wall that defines an outer ring of the light detection region that partitions the light detection region from the electro-optic material so that a layer of air, inert gas, or the like is left in the light detection region. A shaped member may be used. In this case, the light detection region partitioned by the exclusion member is filled with a light transmissive material such as air or an inert gas, and the light detection region is transparent or can be detected. What is necessary is just to be comprised with a translucent material. Alternatively, such an exclusion member may be a member that occupies the light detection region itself. In this case, the exclusion member itself may be made of a transparent or translucent material.
A state like of the electro-optical device of the present invention, the disposed sealing region located around the pixel region between the pair of substrates, further comprising a sealing material bonding the pair of substrates to each other, the removing member is It is formed integrally with the sealing material.
According to this aspect, for example, a sealing material such as an ultraviolet curable resin, a thermosetting resin, or an ultraviolet / heat combined type curable resin is disposed in a seal region located around the pixel region between a pair of substrates. Bond the substrates together. Here, the “pixel area” does not mean an area of individual pixels, but means an entire area in which a plurality of pixels are arranged in a plane, and is typically an “image display area” or “display area”. Is equivalent to.
For example, in the manufacturing process of the electro-optical device, the exclusion member is formed at the same time (that is, integrally with the sealing material) when the sealing material is disposed in the sealing region. Such an exclusion member may be formed by arranging a sealing material by, for example, a screen printing method or dispensing.
In another aspect of the electro-optical device of the present invention, the electro-optical device is formed in a frame region between the pixel region on the one substrate and a seal region located around the pixel region, and corresponds to the light detection region. It further has a frame light shielding film in which an opening is formed.
According to this aspect, the opening corresponding to the light detection region of the frame light shielding film, which is typically arranged in the frame region and the seal region on one substrate, is opened. For this reason, ambient light can reach the light detection means without being disturbed by the frame light shielding film, which is very advantageous in practice.
In another aspect of the electro-optical device of the present invention, at least a part of the space region where the electro-optical material is excluded by the exclusion member arranged so as to surround the periphery of the light detection unit in a frame shape is light transmissive. The gas is filled.
According to this aspect, a light-transmitting gas such as air or an inert gas is filled in at least a part of the space region from which the electro-optical material is excluded. For this reason, attenuation of ambient light reaching the light detection means can be suppressed, which is very advantageous in practice. Here, the “light-transmitting gas” typically means a gas having a high light-transmitting property as compared with a material forming the frame light-shielding film disposed in the frame region. In addition, since the gas to be filled is naturally filled (that is, there is no need to provide a step of filling air), the number of steps does not increase, and productivity and cost are excellent. Yes.
In another aspect of the electro-optical device of the present invention, the space from which the electro-optical material is excluded between the pair of substrates is filled with a light transmissive material as at least a part of the exclusion member.
According to this aspect, for example, a light transmissive material that is the same as or different from that of the sealing material is filled in at least a part of the exclusion member in the space region where the electro-optical material is excluded. Here, the “light transmissive material” typically means a material having a high light transmittance as compared with a material for forming a frame light-shielding film disposed in the frame region. The light transmissive material is not limited to a solid, but may be a gas such as air or an inert gas, a gel, a liquid, or the like.
In another aspect of the electro-optical device of the present invention, the electro-optical device further includes a pair of polarizing plates arranged with the pair of substrates and the electro-optical material interposed therebetween, and the pair of polarizing plates is a polarization of each of the pair of polarizing plates. The axes are arranged such that the angles formed by each other approach a right angle, and the electro-optic material is a liquid crystal.
According to this aspect, when the liquid crystal is excluded from the portion where the light detection means is disposed in plan view on the substrate, light leakage from the opening for the light detection means can be suppressed. In addition, the exclusion member may be formed of any material as long as the liquid crystal can be excluded, and the choice of material is not limited, which is very advantageous in practice.
In order to solve the above problems, an electronic apparatus according to the present invention includes the above-described electro-optical device according to the present invention (including various aspects thereof).
According to the electronic apparatus of the present invention, since the electro-optical device of the present invention described above is provided, light leakage from the opening for the light detection means can be suppressed. As a result, a projection display device capable of displaying high-quality images, a television, a mobile phone, an electronic notebook, a portable audio player, a word processor, a digital camera, a viewfinder type or a monitor direct-view type video tape recorder, a workstation, a television Various electronic devices such as a telephone, a POS terminal, and a touch panel can be realized.
The operation and other advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the best mode for carrying out the invention described below.

In the following drawings, the scales are different for each layer and each member so that each layer and each member can be recognized on the drawing. In the following embodiments, as an example of an electro-optical device, a TFT (Thin Film Transistor) active matrix driving type liquid crystal device with a built-in driving circuit is cited.
<First Embodiment>
A first embodiment of an electro-optical device according to the invention will be described with reference to FIGS. 1 to 4.
First, the overall configuration of the liquid crystal device according to the present embodiment will be described with reference to FIG. FIG. 1 is a perspective view showing the overall configuration of the liquid crystal device according to this embodiment.
In FIG. 1, the liquid crystal device 1 includes a
Next, the configuration of the
2 and 3, in the
The sealing
In FIG. 2, a light-shielding frame light-shielding
In the peripheral region, the data
In the
On the
In FIG. 3, on the
The
A
On the
In addition to the data line driving
Next, the configuration near the
In FIG. 4, a
On the
As shown in FIG. 4, no liquid crystal is disposed on the upper layer side of the
A

(Modification)
Next, a modification according to the liquid crystal device of the present embodiment will be described with reference to FIGS. FIG. 5 is an enlarged cross-sectional view showing the vicinity of the opening in the liquid crystal device according to the modified example of the present embodiment having the same meaning as in FIG. 4, and FIG. 6 is a modified example of the present embodiment.
