Description
The present invention relates to a technique for modulating the polarization direction of light from a light source for each primary color and synthesizing the modulated light as in a reflective liquid crystal panel.
Therefore, in order to realize a projector that can display a color and high-quality image, a configuration of a three-plate system using a reflective light modulator is promising. Here, as a configuration of a three-plate system using a reflective light modulator, a technique using a PBS (polarization beam splitter) can be cited (see Patent Document 1).
However, in the above technique, among the polarization components selected (transmitted or reflected) by the polarization beam splitter at the time of incidence, the component whose polarization state has been changed by the optical modulator is reversely selected (reflected or transmitted) by the polarization beam splitter. This phenomenon is used for each of R, G, and B, so that three polarization beam splitters are required, and a cross prism is also required to synthesize R, G, and B light. There is a problem that the optical system becomes complicated.
The present invention has been made in view of the above-described circumstances, and the object thereof is to prevent the optical system from becoming complicated when a 3 (or more) plate system using a reflective optical modulator is used. To provide a projector and its optical engine.
To achieve the above object, an optical engine of a projector according to the present invention changes the polarization direction of light in the first wavelength range and the second wavelength range from one direction to the other out of incident light whose polarization direction is aligned in one direction. Of the component transmitted through the polarization selective surface and the light reflected by the second optical modulator, the light transmitted through the polarization selective surface. A component, a component reflected by the polarization selection surface in the reflected light by the third light modulator, and a component reflected by the polarization selection surface in the reflected light by the fourth light modulator are combined. It is characterized by that. According to this configuration, the number of components can be reduced.
In the present invention, of the combined light by the polarization selector , the light in the first wavelength region and the second wavelength region, or the polarization direction of the light in the third wavelength region and the fourth wavelength region is converted. It is good also as a structure which has a 2 polarization converter.
In addition to the optical engine, the present invention can be conceptualized as a projector including the optical engine.
Hereinafter, embodiments of the present invention will be described with reference to the drawings. FIG. 1 is a plan view showing a configuration of a projector according to an embodiment of the present invention.
As shown in this figure, a

The

Specifically, as shown in FIG. 3, in this embodiment, the polarization direction of light in a wavelength region corresponding to G (green) is converted from the s direction to the p direction (from the p direction to the s direction). The light is emitted without changing the polarization direction of the light in the wavelength region corresponding to the other R (red) and B (blue).

The lens group 50 (projection means) is arranged on the
As described above, in the present embodiment, most of the light emitted from the

Therefore, the

Therefore, of the light reflected by the
Then, the light in the wavelength region corresponding to G is converted from the s direction to the p direction and emitted by the
By the way, in the

According to such an embodiment, one
In this embodiment, the light of the s-direction polarization component reflected by the reflecting

In the embodiment, the light reflected by the reflecting
As another configuration for separating the light transmitted by the reflecting
In the above-described embodiment, the reflected light from the reflecting

In the configuration shown in FIG. 5, the
In FIG. 5, the
In the above-described embodiment, the three-plate system is used. However, for example, the present invention can also be applied to a four-plate system in which one color is further added.
FIG. 6 is a plan view showing the configuration of a four-plate projector.
In this figure, the
Here, Y and Gb are obtained by dividing the wavelength range corresponding to G (green) into G near R and G near B, respectively.
Further, the
On the other hand, a
The
In such a configuration, out of the light emitted from the

Of the light in the wavelength region corresponding to Y and B that travels straight on the reflecting
Therefore, the

In this example, the light of the s-direction polarization component reflected by the reflecting
According to such a four-plate method, color reproducibility can be improved as compared with the three-plate method. In this case, the configuration is added to the three-plate system shown in FIG. 1 except for a single dichroic mirror except for the optical modulator, so that the configuration can be simplified. is there.
In the configuration shown in FIG. 6, the dichroic mirrors 26 and 28 are replaced with the dichroic prisms in FIG. 5, respectively, and the dichroic prisms, the
In the configuration shown in FIGS. 1, 5, and 6, the light emitted from the
Further, the optical modulator is not limited to the normally white mode, and can be applied to a normally black mode. In the case of the normally black mode, for example, an SH type liquid crystal in which the major axis of liquid crystal molecules is parallel to the substrate direction when no voltage is applied may be used. In the case of an SH type liquid crystal, in detail, the
