In recent years, the sophistication and capabilities of computers have steadily improved. Accordingly, the use of computers for both business and recreation has also increased. For example, computer-based virtual reality devices that provide feedback based on user identification or detection of user body movement are gaining popularity. These devices (hereinafter collectively referred to as “interactive activity devices” for convenience) include, for example, computer games. In these games, the user moves his / her arms, legs, head, and entire body to achieve the purpose of the computer game. Interactive activity devices also include electronic training devices, which are used to improve the skills desired for a wide variety of exercises and functions. For example, in some types of interactive electronic training devices, the user will practice a specific movement of a part of the body and receive feedback in response to whether the user is moving as desired Can do.
While the use of various interactive activity devices increases, the tools used by users to control these devices are often undeveloped. For example, many interactive activity devices require the user to wear equipment that may be clunky and sometimes uncomfortable so that the device can track the user's location. Such equipment is, for example, a belt or a band with a reflective plate that stands out in front to reflect infrared rays.
In addition to tracking user movement, many computers are currently used to recognize video. That is, computers are currently used to identify video and associate that video with specific information. For example, the optical character recognition software can distinguish between the letter “T” and the letter “q”. Based on this recognition, another software program, such as a language processing program, can use the ASCII value of the recognized letter “T”. Yet another application of video recognition includes retinal pattern and fingerprint scanning for personal identification, obstacle recognition and boundary recognition for vehicle guidance, and document watermarking to direct the browser to an Internet site associated with the watermark. Recognition is included.
However, although pattern recognition techniques have become very sophisticated, pattern recognition is usually not used in everyday activities such as electronic games, exercise, and shopping.
According to a first aspect of the present invention, a method for recognizing a target receives a camera for copying a tracking mark displayed on clothing worn by a person in the field of view, and an image from the camera, Providing a computer controlled recognition device including a tracking mark recognition module for identifying a tracking mark in an image and a processor for performing a computer function based on the tracking mark recognized by the tracking mark recognition module; Using the tracking mark recognition module to recognize a tracking mark displayed on clothing from an image provided by the camera. The computer function is to count the number of tracking marks recognized by the tracking mark recognition module.
A clothing item according to a second aspect of the present invention is a clothing item on which a tracking mark is displayed. The tracking mark is to be recognized by the tracking mark recognition module via the image obtained by the camera, the clothing is reversible, the tracking mark is on one side of the clothing and the other A first tracking mark and a second tracking mark respectively displayed on the surface are included.
Advantageously, the stamp is provided in the form of a graphic mark (s). The user of the interactive activity device can use these marked garments conveniently and comfortably, and the device can still detect the marks accurately. The garment displays the graphic mark as a visible tracking (tracking detection) mark that can be tracked by the interactive activity device. The apparel can be converted from one form in which the tracking marks are partially or completely hidden to another form that is prominently displayed so that the interactive activity device can detect the tracking marks. Alternatively or in addition, the tracking mark material contained in the garment is highly reflective for interactive activity devices, but highly reflective for non-interesting observers. Can be no material.
In other apparel, the form of the stamp affixed to it may be an electronic target for detecting user movement. For example, the garment may be footwear with an accelerometer, which indicates when the user steps on the ground, the degree of pressure applied to the ground by the footwear, or both. Some electronic targets can also transmit electromagnetic signals such as light, infrared, and ultrasonic signals to indicate their location (and hence the location of the user's body part) to the interactive activity device. it can. Furthermore, some electronic targets can determine their position, for example using wireless triangulation, and transmit that position (and the position of the user's body part) to the interactive activity device. .
For example, a stamp in the form of a graphic mark recognizable by a computer system may be provided. For example, the garment can display a graphic mark that can be recognized by the interactive activity device. Thereafter, the interactive activity device can take some action as soon as it recognizes the graphic mark. Thus, if the interactive activity device is a game, the interactive activity device can provide a player wearing a graphic-marked garment with access to a game level or play environment that is not otherwise available. . Alternatively or in addition, the graphic-marked clothing may be recognized by a computer located at, for example, a retail store or a sports event venue. Upon recognition of the graphic mark, the computer system can arrange for the wearer to receive purchase credits, coupons or other rewards or benefits. Furthermore, the computer system can store information about the wearer in a database, and can use the information to provide, for example, product information and sports information to the wearer.
The foregoing summary, as well as the detailed description of embodiments below, will be better understood when read in conjunction with the appended drawings. The accompanying drawings are included as examples and are not included as limitations on the present invention.
Overview Various embodiments of the present invention relate to the use of a stamp that a user can wear or otherwise carry, such that a device, such as a computer, can perform functions associated with the stamp. Fulfill. For example, indicia in accordance with various embodiments of the present invention can take the form of a graphic mark that can be conveniently and comfortably applied to clothing worn by a user of the interactive activity device. Can be displayed and still accurately detected by the device. In some embodiments of the present invention, the graphic mark serves as a tracking mark, and the position of the mark can be tracked by an interactive activity device. The apparel can be converted from one form in which the tracking marks are partially or completely hidden to another form that is prominently displayed so that the interactive activity device can detect the tracking marks. When a graphic mark is recognized, it can cause the device to take some action separately or in addition to it. For example, a specific graphic mark can be attached to clothing for use in combination with an interactive game. When the game recognizes the graphic mark, the game can provide a player with the graphic mark access to a gaming environment that is otherwise not available.
The signature can take the form of an electronic target that allows another device to detect the user's movement. For example, the stamp may be an accelerometer attached to the footwear, which indicates when the user steps on the ground, the degree of pressure applied to the ground by the footwear, or both. In addition, for some electronic targets, the electronic target transmits electromagnetic signals such as light, infrared, or ultrasound signals, and its position (and the position of the user's body part) is interactive. It can be shown on another device, such as a device. In yet another type of electronic target, the target determines its location using, for example, wireless triangulation, and determines its location (and the location of the user's body part) such as an interactive activity device. Can be transmitted to other devices.
The stamp may be in the form of a graphic mark that can be recognized by a device such as a computer system, and can prompt the device to perform some function. For example, some embodiments of the present invention provide clothing that displays graphic marks recognizable by an interactive activity device. The interactive activity device can then take some action as soon as it recognizes the graphic mark according to various embodiments of the present invention. Thus, graphic-marked garments according to various embodiments of the present invention may be recognized by a computer located at, for example, a retail store or a sports event venue. Upon recognition of the graphic mark, the computer system can arrange for the wearer to receive purchase credits, coupons or other rewards or benefits. Furthermore, the computer system can store information about the wearer in a database, and can use the information to provide, for example, product information and sports information to the wearer.
Interactive Activity Device Tracking Mark FIG. 1 illustrates one embodiment of a garment. As seen in this figure, the garment has a plurality of graphic marks in the form of tracking marks. More specifically, the
In the illustrated embodiment, the portion of the
As will be appreciated by those skilled in the art, various techniques can be used to attach the tracking marks 103-107 to the
Combination Use of Tracking Mark and Interactive Activity Device FIG. 2 shows a usage example of the
For example, the tracking
When the tracking
The tracking
Based on the detected movement of the tracking mark, the
It should be noted that the tracking mark identification module 211 (or a separate recognition module) can additionally recognize the tracking mark and associate one or more tracking marks with qualitative (qualitative) information. . The user can then wear clothing that displays a special tracking mark, such as a specific number or pattern. The
For example, if the
Furthermore, the
In addition, the qualitative information from the tracking mark can be used to start the game within the game that the wearer is playing. That is, a game player wearing a specific tracking mark may use the mark to open another type of electronic game embedded in a game that the wearer has already played. Therefore, a wearer of a specific tracking mark may be able to preview or play a new game embedded in a game that the wearer has already played, without limitation. In addition, the tracking mark can be used to access game play with a particular player on the network, or to recall a game reference or other pre-stored information associated with the wearer's tracking mark.
The use of tracking marks may be particularly beneficial for purposes of playing games (or performing some other interactive function) on a network of interconnected computing devices such as the Internet or a local intranet. For example, the
In some of these embodiments, the
In addition to providing qualitative information statically, the tracking mark can also provide qualitative information when moved. For example, the tracking mark recognition module 211 (or a separate recognition module) can recognize a specific movement or action of one or more tracking marks as character information or instruction information. Thus, the user can perform a specific action using one or more tracking marks, and the tracking mark recognition module 211 (or a separate recognition module) recognizes these actions as instructions, for example, Switch off, change game type or characteristics, enter alphanumeric information, or provide other information to the
Active Tracking Target As noted above, apparel that may be included or used in various embodiments of the present invention is stamped in the form of a dynamic (active) target that can be tracked by an interactive activity device. ing. An active tracking target may be, for example, an electronic device that transmits signals with electromagnetic radiation at one or more frequencies. Thus, the active tracking target can transmit an optical signal, an infrared signal, an ultrasound signal, or a wireless signal to the interactive activity device. This signal is then received by the interactive activity device and can be used to determine the position of the target using, for example, conventional triangulation techniques.
Furthermore, some active tracking targets can detect user movement. These targets then transmit the detected information to the interactive activity device. For example, the garment can include one or more accelerometers for detecting the velocity and / or direction of the user's arm, leg or other limb, or both, or , To detect the user's own speed and / or direction. An accelerometer placed on the footwear may also be used to detect when the user has lowered his foot and placed it on the ground, when the user has his foot lowered and placed on the ground, or both Good. For these types of tracking targets, the accelerometer can be connected to a transmitter, so that information detected by the accelerometer can be transmitted to the interactive activity device to determine user activity.
Some tracking targets are not only active, but also intelligent. This type of tracking target can, for example, determine its location relative to the interactive activity device and provide that location information directly to the interactive activity device. For example, some electronic devices have the ability to triangulate their position with an error within a few inches using electromagnetic signals. Thus, these types of electronic devices can be used to determine the position of the user's hand, arm, foot, leg or other body part or even the user's own position. This location information can then be transmitted to the interactive activity device. Using the position information, the interactive activity device can determine the movement of the user.
Recognition Device In addition to being used in conjunction with an interactive activity device that tracks the user's position, in various embodiments of the present invention, a stamp can be used in conjunction with the recognition device. In these embodiments, the recognizer recognizes the stamp and then associates the stamp with some qualitative information. The recognizer (or any other device associated with the recognizer) can perform some additional functions based on the associated qualitative information.
For example, in some embodiments of the present invention, the recognition device may be a computer that receives video through a camera, such as a CCD camera. In these embodiments, it is a graphic mark that is displayed on the user's clothing or otherwise carried by the user. When the user passes in front of the camera, the computer recognizes the graphic mark and associates the graphic mark with some qualitative information.
The graphic mark can be unique. In these embodiments, the qualitative information includes the name of the person registered as the wearer of the graphic mark, the organization to which the registered wearer is affiliated, and information generated based on the situation in which the graphic mark was previously recognized. Such individual information can be included. However, in yet another embodiment, the graphic mark is not unique, but instead is associated with a group, product, or other feature that is common to multiple people. In these embodiments, the qualitative information includes characteristics of the product or related products, an increase in the number of registrants of the wearer of the product or using the product in some other way, an increase in the number of registrants of the group subscriber Or it may be a list of items or activities associated with a product or group, and general information combining them.
The recognition device can be used, for example, in a retail store setting. As described above, when a person is wearing clothing with a unique graphic mark, the recognition device can associate the graphic mark with specific information. In a retail store setting, for example, the recognition device can identify the purchase preference or purchase history of the wearer. Based on this information, the recognition device (or another related device) can give the wearer credits, coupons or other rewards for purchasing or renting goods and services. Alternatively or in addition, the recognition device or other related device can guide the wearer to a product or service based on the wearer's purchase history or other information associated with the wearer. .
If a person is wearing apparel with graphic marks that have a common group, product, or other feature, the recognition device (or another related device) may have a purchase preference associated with the relevant group, product, or feature or Purchase history can be identified. A recognition device or other device may guide the wearer to a specific product or service, or provide a credit, coupon or other reward to the wearer based on information identified from the graphic mark. Further, graphic mark recognition can be used to formulate purchase preferences or purchase histories for both individuals and other features corresponding to groups, products, or graphic marks.
In various embodiments of the present invention, the graphic mark can also be used, for example, in a sports setting. That is, a recognition device can be used at a sporting event to identify an event participant, its coach or trainer, or other player players. Alternatively or additionally, a recognition device can be used to identify a spectator at a sports event. For example, if the sporting event is a soccer match, some spectators wear clothing with a graphic mark associated with one soccer team, while other spectators have another graphic mark associated with the opponent's soccer team. You can wear the displayed clothing. In accordance with various embodiments of the present invention, one or more recognition devices can be used to determine how many spectators are associated with each team based on the recognition of different graphic marks.
It should be noted that the recognition apparatus according to various embodiments of the present invention can recognize graphic marks using any kind of recognition technology. As described above, various recognition techniques are known, and are used, for example, for facial feature recognition, character recognition, retinal pattern and fingerprint recognition.
Graphic Marks Graphically Changeable Clothes Various

In the following description, various types of apparel are disclosed, each including a garment and a stamp in the form of at least one graphic mark. The garments are very diverse within the scope of the various embodiments of the present invention and include, for example, shirts, trousers, socks, shoes, hats, wrist bands. Further, the garment configuration can selectively hide or selectively expose the graphic mark from view. Accordingly, a person wearing this example of clothing can hide the graphic mark in a public place or hide the graphic mark so that it is not detected by the interactive activity device (or recognition device). Similarly, the wearer can expose the graphic mark when detection by an interactive activity device (or recognition device) is desired.
Depending on the application of the interactive activity device such as the
3A to 3C show a long-
Each
The
When the
The
Based on the above,
FIG. 4 shows another type of clothing including a
The
The
In the structure of the
When the
A pair of
FIG. 5D shows clothing having a similar structure as
FIGS. 6A and 6B show clothing in the form of a
In FIG. 6C and FIG. 6D, another type of garment having the general structure of the
With reference to FIGS. 7A to 7C, a garment including a
FIG. 7A also discloses
8A and 8B show another type of clothing, specifically a
9A-9E illustrate another
The
The
11A and 11B show a
The
Typical operations when converting the
13A and 13B show another garment structure, which includes a
13C and 13D show
Another common procedure by which clothing can be converted from a concealed configuration to an exposed configuration is to stretch the clothing to expose graphic marks. For example, FIGS. 14A and 14B show clothing including a

In the garment description disclosed with reference to FIGS. 3A-16C, various examples are provided for shirts and pants that can be used to selectively hide and expose the graphic marks. In some embodiments, a structure for selectively concealing and exposing graphic marks has been disclosed, for example with respect to a shirt. Those skilled in the art will understand that similar structures can be applied to other types of clothing, such as trousers, coats, shoes or socks. Thus, the various structures for concealing and exposing graphic marks are disclosed for a particular type of garment, merely for the purpose of providing an example of how the structure can be incorporated into the garment. And not from the intention to limit the various embodiments of the present invention to a particular type of garment. Furthermore, the above discussion generally provides instructions on how to convert clothing from a concealed configuration to an exposed configuration. One skilled in the art should understand that the reverse process can be used to switch from an exposed configuration to a concealed configuration.
Depending on the application of the interactive activity device, it may be necessary to detect the position of the foot rather than the position of the ankle or leg. For example, an interactive activity device that simulates a soccer game would include game play involving kicking a soccer ball. Thus, clothing in the form of footwear, including shoes and socks, can be used in conjunction with the graphic marks to provide accurate data regarding foot positions to the interactive activity device.
17A and 17B show a
The upper 1705 includes an

Not only shoes but also socks can be used in conjunction with graphic marks to provide

While footwear with graphic marks can be used to provide data regarding the position of the foot, depending on the application of the interactive activity device, it may be necessary to detect the position of the head. For example, an interactive activity device that simulates a soccer game would include game play that involves using the head to guide the movement of a soccer ball. Thus, clothing in the form of headwear, such as a hat or headband, can be used in conjunction with a graphic mark to provide accurate data regarding head position to an interactive activity device. .

Now consider additional examples of embodiments relating to shirts and pants. Referring to FIGS. 25A to 25D, a
A similar structure can be applied to other clothing such as the
26A to 26C includes a
Therefore, in the process of movement of the
In many applications of interactive activity devices, data on the position of the limbs, including arms and legs, is required to effectively track human movement. Using the various types of clothing described above, including shirts, trousers and footwear, data regarding the position of the limbs can be provided to the interactive activity device. However, some people may prefer a band structure such as a wrist band or an ankle band with a graphic mark. In the discussion that follows, examples of various bands for either the wrist or ankle are provided for illustrative purposes. However, one of ordinary skill in the art should understand that the general structure of the band discussed herein is not limited to wrist and ankle applications, and can be applied to other body parts, including, for example, the elbows, knees, and upper arms. It is.

In FIGS. 28A-28C, another embodiment of apparel is shown in the form of a
Referring to FIGS. 29A and 29B, a garment including a
30A and 30B disclose clothing including a
31A to 31C disclose clothing including a
Referring to FIGS. 32A to 32C, clothing including a
In FIGS. 33A-33D, another embodiment of clothing is shown in the form of a
Various garment types can be combined, as shown in FIGS. 34A-34C, which disclose a
Clothing that acts as a graphic mark In some embodiments of the present invention, an entire piece of clothing can act as a graphic mark. For example, FIGS. 35A to 35C show three examples of a hand / wrist cover 3501 that can each serve as a graphic mark 3503. More specifically, the hand /
In each of the embodiments shown in FIGS. 35A-35C, the hand / wrist cover 3501 has a color that is easily distinguishable from most background environments. The cover 3501 may be, for example, a bright orange color or a bright yellow color. The interactive activity device can use this characteristic color to distinguish between the cover 3501 and the background environment, so that the interactive activity device can move the cover 3501, and thus the wearer's hand and The movement of the wrist can be tracked. Thus, the cover 3501 itself forms a tracking mark 3503 that can be tracked by the interactive activity device. Of course, for any type of apparel, it is understood that a graphic mark can be formed utilizing a characteristic color of part or the entire apparel, and that this feature is not limited to a hand / wrist cover. It will be.
Further, in various embodiments of the present invention, the reversible garment can have a first distinguishable color on one side and another distinguishable color on the opposite side. In these embodiments, the wearer can change the graphic mark simply by turning the garment over and wearing it. For example, each cover 3501 can have a different color on the back side of the illustrated surface. This different color is also distinguished (and thus tracked) from most background environments by the interactive activity device. Accordingly, in various embodiments of the present invention, the garment itself can serve as a graphic mark. Further, in some embodiments of the present invention, the garment can serve as two different graphic marks.
Graphic Mark Type Overview As discussed in detail below, a wide variety of materials and mechanisms can be used to form graphic marks for use with interactive activity devices, recognition devices, or both. Some graphic marks may be fixed and passive. Other graphic marks may be active. With this type of graphic mark, the characteristics of the graphic mark can be changed. The wearer can specify the characteristics of the active graphic mark. In other embodiments of the present invention, the characteristics of the active graphic mark may change automatically in response to environmental changes, some activity by the wearer, or other external stimuli.
In many examples of the present invention described above, the graphic mark is formed by a substantially two-dimensional surface. However, it should be noted that three-dimensional graphic marks can be used in various embodiments of the present invention. For example, raised shapes such as pyramids or hemispheres can be used as graphic marks for various embodiments of the present invention. Advantageously, the use of a 3D graphic mark makes it visible to the interactive activity device from various angles and directions.
Manufacturing Method of Clothing with Graphic Marks FIG. 36 shows one method for manufacturing clothing with graphic marks such as the
For example, as shown in FIG. 1, the
Furthermore, in some interactive games, only the position of the player is tracked. In the case of these games, it would be sufficient for clothing to have only one graphic mark placed at the center of the clothing. In addition, in an interactive game, the movement of each of the player's limbs can actually be tracked. For this type of interactive game, clothing may require multiple graphic marks, such as one on each sleeve of the shirt or one leg of the pants.
After the manufacturer determines the appropriate graphic marks to be applied to the clothing, the manufacturer manufactures the clothing with those graphic marks in step 3603. As described in detail above, the manufacturer can manufacture clothing with a graphic mark from the beginning, or can place the graphic mark on the clothing after the clothing is made. Next, in step 3605, the manufacturer makes the garment available to the wearer intended to play an interactive game studied by the manufacturer. Thereafter, in step 3607, the
As described above, the type of clothing using the graphic mark can be any desired. For example, in some embodiments of the invention, the garment can include shirts such as long sleeve shirts and shirts with sleeves, jackets, pants, shorts, socks and hats. The apparel can also include footwear. Furthermore, the garment is a hand-held item such as a weight or sports equipment, a band such as a band that can be worn around the player's wrist, chest or ankle, or a sticker that can be affixed to the garment that the player already has. It may be. In addition to the above method, in yet another embodiment of the present invention, the user can personally select a graphic mark to be displayed on the garment. For example, the manufacturer can provide one or more components, such as a laminate or adhesive material, which can be used by the wearer to form individual graphic marks on the garment.
Retroreflective Graphic Marks FIG. 37 illustrates yet another embodiment of the present invention that utilizes one or more retroreflective graphic marks to help an interactive game track player movement. ing. As seen in this figure, the
More specifically, with reference to FIG. 38, the function of retroreflectivity will be briefly discussed. As will be appreciated by those skilled in the art, there are usually two ways of reflection by a material. First, the surface may diffusely reflect incident light. That is, when incident light strikes a diffusive surface at a particular angle, the surface reflects the incident light in multiple directions and does not produce a clear reflection of the incident light. Second, the surface may provide specular or specular reflection. With this type of surface, when incident light strikes the surface at a particular angle, the surface reflects the incident light diagonally. However, at the retroreflective surface, incident light is reflected in approximately the same direction as it was emitted.
As is known in the art, the
Returning to FIG. 37, in the interactive game used by the
Therefore, the
Of course, it should be understood that the
FIG. 39 shows one embodiment of a
It should be noted that in addition to the light source / lens configurations shown in FIGS. 37 and 39, various other configurations are also possible. For example, the
Active Graphic Marks As noted above, the features of graphic marks according to various embodiments of the present invention can be controlled by the wearer, automatically respond to other external stimuli, or both. Can be. For example, in some embodiments of the present invention, the graphic mark can be formed from a flexible display such as a flexible display formed from an organic material or a flexible display using a series of magnetized two-color spheres. With this arrangement, the wearer (or other person) can use a controller such as a keypad, digitizer, or remote computer processing device to change the appearance of the graphic mark as desired. In yet another embodiment of the invention, the material forming the graphic mark may be a material whose characteristics automatically change in response to external stimuli such as the environmental conditions or use of the garment. For example, the graphic mark can be formed from a material that changes color depending on temperature. As another example, the graphic mark may be formed from a light that changes color when attached to a shoe and reaches a preset number of steps.
Graphic Mark Formation As noted above, graphic marks according to various embodiments of the present invention can be formed using any desired technique and method. For example, the graphic mark can be sewn to the garment, adhered to the garment with a suitable adhesive, or woven or knitted into the garment material. Furthermore, graphic marks can be printed on clothing using pad printing technology. Also, the graphic mark can be thermally transferred to the garment, sublimated to the garment, or simply dyed to the garment material. In addition, the graphic marks can be glued to the garment, impregnated into the garment, for example by thermoforming, or etched into the garment material. Furthermore, the graphic mark can be mechanically attached to the garment so that it cannot be removed by a suitable fastening mechanism such as a pin or staple. As will also be appreciated, multiple graphic marks can be applied to a single garment using different techniques if desired.
