Description
The present invention relates to a fuel cell and a gas sealing method thereof. More specifically, the present invention relates to an improvement in the internal structure of a fuel cell.
In general, a fuel cell (for example, a polymer electrolyte fuel cell) is composed of an electrolyte membrane and a joined body (eg, MEA) composed of a pair of electrodes disposed on both surfaces thereof, and a pair of separators that sandwich the joined body. . In addition, a plurality of such cells are stacked to form a so-called fuel cell stack.
However, the existing sealing member such as an O (O) ring or gasket may not completely fill the gap, and the sealing performance may not be sufficient.
Therefore, an object of the present invention is to provide a fuel cell and a gas sealing method thereof that can ensure or further improve the sealing performance.
As described above, a sealing member such as an O-ring may not ensure sufficient sealing performance. The present inventor, who has earnestly studied this matter, has obtained the following knowledge. That is, for example, if there is a gap on the side of the electrode (porous body, diffusion layer) (that is, the portion around the edge), one of the gases that would normally be used for the power generation reaction through the porous body or diffusion layer. The part flows out into the gap where it easily flows (in other words, a side flow, bypass), and since it is not used for power generation, power generation performance decreases. In this case, even a slight gap may cause insufficient sealing performance.
Further, the ends (sides or edges) of the porous body and the diffusion layer described above may not be aligned and may include a step, and in such a case, a gap is generated although it is extremely small, and the size of the gap varies. For this reason, existing O-rings and seals may not fill the gaps and may not provide sufficient sealing performance.
In addition, when sealing, a boundary may be generated between the seal and the groove, and a gap may be generated in the portion. Further, a mechanism and a space for sealing the periphery of the porous body and the diffusion layer are required separately.
The present inventor, who has further studied focusing on these matters, has come to obtain new knowledge that leads to the solution of such problems. The present invention is based on such knowledge, an electrolyte membrane, electrodes formed on both surfaces of the electrolyte membrane, a diffusion layer that constitutes the electrode and diffuses a reaction gas supplied to the electrolyte membrane, A fuel cell having a separator for supplying a reaction gas to the diffusion layer is characterized in that a portion near the outer periphery of the diffusion layer is pressurized and consolidated to function as a seal for the reaction gas.
In addition, the gas sealing method of the fuel cell according to the present invention diffuses a reaction gas supplied to the electrolyte membrane, an electrolyte membrane, electrodes formed on both surfaces of the electrolyte membrane, and layers constituting the electrode. In a fuel cell having a diffusion layer and a separator that supplies a reaction gas to the diffusion layer, a portion near the outer periphery of the diffusion layer is pressurized and consolidated to function as a reaction gas seal.
As described above, the present invention is characterized in that the end of the diffusion layer is pressurized and consolidated in the electrode of the fuel cell, thereby sealing the reaction gas. In such a case, the portion can be consolidated to reduce the gas permeability and diffusibility, and for example, the reaction gas can be sealed in a state where there is no boundary such as a seal member (so-called boundary-less state). In this respect, in the first place, there is no conventional fuel cell that compresses the seal portion, but none of the ends of the diffusion layer (for example, the end of MEGA) is consolidated for the purpose of gas sealing. Can be sealed only by the compressed part. Moreover, in such a case, in order to ensure the surface pressure during power generation and improve the positioning accuracy during assembly, the compressed part (the part compressed and consolidated) and the power generation reaction part (power generation by the chemical reaction of the reaction gas) It is also possible to make use of the difference in thickness with the portion to be).
In the above fuel cell, the electrolyte membrane and the electrode may form a membrane-electrode assembly (MEA), or the electrolyte membrane, the electrode and the diffusion layer form a membrane-electrode-diffusion layer assembly (MEGA). It may be formed. Further, the film thickness of the consolidated portion of the membrane-electrode assembly is such that the surface pressure applied during power generation of the fuel cell can be suppressed from being applied to the seal portion of the membrane-electrode assembly that does not support power generation. It is preferable to be formed thin. Similarly, the thickness of the consolidated portion of the membrane-electrode-diffusion layer assembly is such that the surface pressure applied during power generation of the fuel cell is applied to the seal portion of the membrane-electrode-diffusion layer assembly that does not support power generation. It is also preferable that the layer is formed thin enough to prevent the above.
According to the present invention, it is possible to ensure or improve the sealing performance without using a sealing member. In addition, it is possible to secure the surface pressure during power generation and improve the positioning accuracy during assembly by utilizing the difference in thickness between the compressed part and the power generation reaction part.
Hereinafter, the configuration of the present invention will be described in detail based on an example of an embodiment shown in the drawings.

FIG. 1 shows a schematic configuration of a
The fuel cell 1 configured by such a fuel cell stack or the like can be used in, for example, an in-vehicle power generation system of a fuel cell vehicle (FCHV; Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehicle), but is not limited thereto. It can also be used in power generation systems mounted on various mobile bodies (for example, ships, airplanes, etc.), self-propelled devices such as robots, and stationary power generation systems.
As an electrolyte contained in the
The
The MEGA 30 includes a polymer electrolyte membrane (hereinafter also simply referred to as an electrolyte membrane) 31 made of a polymer material ion exchange membrane, and a pair of electrodes (an anode side diffusion electrode and a cathode side diffusion electrode) sandwiching the
The
The separator 20 (20a, 20b) is made of a gas impermeable conductive material. Examples of the conductive material include carbon and a hard resin having conductivity, and metals such as aluminum and stainless steel. The base material of the separator 20 (20a, 20b) of the present embodiment is formed of a plate-like metal (metal separator), and a film with excellent corrosion resistance is provided on the surface of the base material on the
Further, a groove-like flow path constituted by a plurality of concave portions is formed on both surfaces of the
Furthermore, as described above, the
Further, in the vicinity of the longitudinal ends of the
Of the manifolds as described above, the
In the present embodiment, the cooling water inlet-
The first seal member 13a and the
Further, a plurality of members (for example, four independent small rectangular frames and a large frame for forming a fluid flow path) are formed between the
In addition, as the first to third seal members 13a to 13c, an elastic body (gasket) that seals a fluid by physical contact with an adjacent member, or an adhesive that is bonded by chemical bonding with an adjacent member. An agent or the like can be used. For example, in this embodiment, a member that is physically sealed by elasticity is employed as each of the seal members 13a to 13c, but instead, a member that is sealed by a chemical bond such as the adhesive described above may be employed.
The frame-
Next, the configuration of the fuel cell 1 will be briefly described (see FIG. 2). The fuel cell 1 according to the present embodiment includes a
The
The
The
The
The
Subsequently, the structure of the gas diffusion layers 32b and 33b and the like in the fuel cell 1 will be described (see FIG. 3 and the like).
As described above, the fuel cell 1 of the present embodiment has a structure that functions as a reactive gas seal by pressurizing and consolidating the portions near the outer periphery of the gas diffusion layers 32b and 33b of the MEGA 30 ( (See FIG. 3 etc.) That is, in this embodiment, gas is sealed by pressurizing and consolidating the end portions near the outer periphery of the diffusion layers 32b and 33b in the
In this case, examples of the compression process for consolidation include a process using a roller step such as roll bonding and a process using a blast process. Moreover, it is preferable that the compression treatments such as these are performed simultaneously when the
As described above, in the present embodiment, the compression treatment for consolidating the gas diffusion layers 32b and 33b is performed for the purpose of gas sealing, and the reaction gas can be sealed only by the compressed portion. According to this, it is possible to ensure or improve the sealing performance without using a sealing member. The operation and effect of the fuel cell 1 in this embodiment will be described as follows in comparison with a fuel cell having a conventional structure (see FIGS. 4 and 5).
That is, for example, when there is a gap beside the
In addition, there may be a case where the diffusion layers 32b and 33b and the ends (edge portions) of the
In this regard, as described above, the fuel cell 1 of the present embodiment can ensure or improve the sealing performance without using a sealing member. For this reason, there also exists an advantage that the mechanism and space for providing a sealing member are not required separately.
In addition, it is possible to secure the surface pressure during power generation and improve the positioning accuracy during assembly by utilizing the difference in thickness between the compressed portion to be compressed and the power generation reaction portion R. That is, by reducing the thickness of the consolidated portion of the
The above-described embodiment is an example of a preferred embodiment of the present invention, but is not limited thereto, and various modifications can be made without departing from the scope of the present invention. For example, in the present embodiment, the case where the MEGA (membrane-electrode-diffusion layer assembly) 30 is used has been described as an example. However, even if this is an MEA (membrane-electrode assembly), the same effect is realized. Yes.
