Description
The present invention relates to an improvement of a backlight device that illuminates a display panel such as a liquid crystal display, and more particularly, to a backlight device having a configuration in which illumination light is incident from a side end surface of a light guide plate disposed on the back side of the display panel. Regarding improvement.
Various electronic devices including a display panel such as a liquid crystal display are equipped with a backlight device for illuminating the display panel.
For devices that are strongly demanded to be thin, such as in-vehicle navigation devices, the backlight device is also required to be thin.

In the conventional backlight device, the light emitted from the
Further, in the conventional configuration, it is difficult to irradiate the
Japanese Laid-Open Patent Publication No. 2000-221502 discloses a backlight that allows light from an LED to be incident from an edge of a side surface of a light guide plate and emitted to the liquid crystal panel side. In this backlight, uniform illumination is realized by providing a light diffusing surface that reflects and diffuses light in a direction along the edge in a light source chamber of a housing that houses LEDs. However, since the light incident on the light guide plate is directly irradiated onto the minute uneven pattern on the bottom surface, there is a luminance variation due to the formation of a shadow caused by the minute uneven pattern, and the amount of light decreases as it goes to the back side. It is clear that this happens. In order to compensate for the decrease in the amount of light, it is necessary to increase the number of LEDs, which causes an increase in cost and size.
In the conventional backlight device, the light emitted from the LED is directly radiated to the reflection surface opposite to the emission surface, and the light reflected by the reflection surface is emitted from the emission surface to the display panel side. Only light in a very small range of the irradiation range (angle) of light emitted from the irradiation LED could be used for illumination of the display panel. In particular, the amount of reflected light is reduced on the reflection surface on the back side compared to the reflection surface on the near side, which causes a partial reduction in the luminance of the display panel.
The present invention has been made in view of the above, and increases the number of LEDs in a backlight device having a configuration in which illumination light is incident from a side end surface of a light guide plate disposed on the back side of a display panel. It is an object of the present invention to provide a backlight device and a display device that can illuminate the display panel with uniform brightness over the entire surface while ensuring a sufficiently large amount of reflected light in the back part away from the LED. Yes.
To achieve the above object, a backlight device according to the first aspect of the present invention includes a light guide plate having an exit surface on the front surface, a reflective surface on the rear surface side, and an incident surface on a side end surface, and the incident surface. A light source that causes light to be incident on the light guide plate, wherein the light source is an LED, a roughened region is formed on the reflective surface, and the reflective surface Is inclined toward the exit surface as it is farther from the entrance surface, the exit surface and the entrance surface intersect at an acute angle, and the entrance surface transmits light from the light source to the exit surface. The light beam is refracted toward the reflection surface and is totally reflected by the light exit surface so as to irradiate the reflection surface side.
In the conventional backlight device, the light emitted from the LED incident from the side end face of the light guide plate is directly applied to the reflection surface opposite to the light emission surface, and the light reflected by the reflection surface is displayed from the light emission surface. Since the light was emitted to the panel side, only a very small range of the irradiation range (angle) of the emitted light from the side surface illumination LEDs could be used for illumination of the display panel. In particular, the amount of reflected light is reduced on the reflection surface on the back side compared to the reflection surface on the near side, which causes a partial reduction in the luminance of the display panel.
In the present invention, the light incident from the side end surface of the light guide plate is configured to irradiate the front surface by refraction at the incident surface and to totally reflect the light, so that the reflection surface provided most of the light from the light source on the rear surface side. It is possible to effectively use as a backlight by reflecting the light. In addition, it is possible to illuminate the back side of the light guide plate with a uniform and sufficient amount of light.
A second aspect of the present invention is characterized in that, in the first aspect, the reflective surface includes a rear surface of the light guide plate and a reflective layer disposed along the rear surface.
According to a third aspect of the present invention, there is provided a display device comprising: the display panel; and the backlight device according to the first or second aspect disposed on the rear surface of the display panel.
As described above, according to the present invention, the light from the light source is totally reflected on the front surface arranged opposite to the display panel, and then reflected on the reflective surface facing the front surface so as to irradiate the liquid crystal panel. Therefore, the loss of light amount is reduced, and it becomes possible to effectively use most of the light components belonging to the entire irradiation range from the LED as the light source to illuminate the display panel. For this reason, the entire light emitted from the LEDs can be directed uniformly toward the liquid crystal panel surface, and uneven brightness does not occur on the illumination surface. In addition, the number of LEDs can be reduced (power saving), the number of parts can be reduced, and the cost can be reduced.
Hereinafter, the present invention will be described in detail with reference to embodiments shown in the drawings.

(B) and (b) are an explanatory diagram showing a main part configuration of a backlight device using the light guide plate, and an explanatory diagram showing a reflection path of incident light.

In addition, the variation in luminance caused by the adjacent other convex portion entering the shadow of a certain convex portion is also eliminated.

As described above, according to the backlight device of the present invention, the light from the light source is once totally reflected on the front surface, then reflected on the reflective surface facing the front surface and irradiated to the liquid crystal panel side.
