Description
The present invention relates to a liquid crystal display device, and more particularly to a technique that is effective in reducing display unevenness.
A TFT liquid crystal display device using a thin film transistor as an active element can display a high-definition image, and is therefore used as a display for various display devices. In particular, a high-definition liquid crystal display device is, for example, a display for a medical display device, or a small liquid crystal display device having about 240 × 320 × 3 subpixels as a display for a portable device such as a mobile phone. in use.
In general, a liquid crystal display device is configured by injecting and sealing a liquid crystal layer between a pair of substrates (for example, a glass substrate), and then attaching a pair of polarizing plates to the outside of the pair of substrates. A liquid crystal display device incorporating a polarizing element instead of a pair of polarizing plates is known. (See

Medical liquid crystal display devices are required to detect display unevenness of a liquid crystal display panel and correct the detected display unevenness. In the conventional method, the display unevenness of the liquid crystal display panel is measured with a camera, and the detected display unevenness is corrected based on the result. Therefore, there is a problem that display unevenness cannot be corrected on the user side after shipping after correction in the manufacturing process.
On the other hand, in a liquid crystal display device for portable use that requires low power consumption, it is desired to reduce flicker and drive at a low frequency. However, the conventional method has a problem in that it cannot satisfy the demand because the optimum common voltage condition varies depending on variations in temperature and power supply voltage.
The present invention has been made to solve the above-described problems of the prior art, and an object of the present invention is to realize image display and display unevenness detection with the same liquid crystal display panel in a liquid crystal display device. It is to provide the technology that becomes.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a technique capable of always performing flicker detection in a liquid crystal display device.
The above and other objects and novel features of the present invention will become apparent from the description of this specification and the accompanying drawings.

FIG. 2 shows an equivalent circuit of the subpixel P (j, k) shown in FIG.
The subpixel P (j, k) includes a pixel electrode (PX) and a thin film transistor (hereinafter referred to as a pixel TFT) 101 for inputting a video voltage to the pixel electrode (PX).

In this embodiment, when a high-level scanning voltage for turning on the pixel TFT (101) is supplied to the gate line G (k), the pixel TFT (101) is turned on and the drain line D (j) is turned on. Since the video voltage is input to the pixel electrode (PX), an image is displayed on the liquid crystal display panel.

As described above, according to the present embodiment, it is possible to realize image display and display unevenness detection with the same display panel, and therefore, no special device is required for display unevenness detection. Therefore, it is possible to realize high-quality image display.
[Example 2]
In general, when the same voltage (DC voltage) is applied to the liquid crystal layer for a long time, the inclination of the liquid crystal layer is fixed, resulting in an afterimage phenomenon and shortening the life of the liquid crystal layer. In order to prevent this, in the liquid crystal display device, the voltage applied to the liquid crystal layer is changed to AC every certain time, that is, the pixel electrode based on the voltage supplied to the counter electrode (also referred to as a common electrode). Is supplied to the high potential side / low potential side at regular intervals.
In this case, the optimum value of the common voltage (VCOM) supplied to the counter electrode fluctuates due to temperature fluctuations, or the voltage of the common voltage (VCOM) supplied to the counter electrode varies due to fluctuations in the power supply voltage. When the voltage fluctuates, the voltage supplied to the liquid crystal when the voltage supplied to the pixel electrode is higher than the voltage supplied to the counter electrode (hereinafter referred to as positive writing) and the voltage supplied to the pixel electrode are applied to the counter electrode. Unlike the voltage written to the liquid crystal when the potential is lower than the supplied voltage (hereinafter referred to as negative polarity writing), the display screen flickers (generally called flicker).
In order to prevent this flicker, a difference between the luminance of the
In this embodiment, a flicker detection circuit for detecting a difference between the luminance of the

FIG. 6 is a block diagram showing a schematic configuration of the liquid crystal display panel of the liquid crystal display device according to the second embodiment of the present invention.
A difference from the liquid crystal display panel of FIG. 1 is that only the subpixel P (j, k) is formed in the

In this embodiment, the
As described above, in this embodiment, since the flicker detection circuit is provided outside the
In each of the above-described embodiments, a color filter may be provided on the CF substrate side. Further, in each of the above-described embodiments, the case of the vertical electric field type liquid crystal display panel in which the counter electrode is formed on the CF substrate side has been described. However, the present invention is not limited to this, and the counter electrode is a TFT substrate. It can also be applied to a horizontal electric field type liquid crystal display panel (IPS type liquid crystal display panel) formed on the side.
As mentioned above, the invention made by the present inventor has been specifically described based on the above embodiments. However, the present invention is not limited to the above embodiments, and various modifications can be made without departing from the scope of the invention. Of course.
