Description
また、米国や欧州等の各国では石油の消費量の低減を図るためにガソリン中にアルコールを混合した燃料が自動車用として普及しつつあるが、燃料中のアルコール含有率に応じて空燃比や点火時期等を制御することにより空燃比がリーン化することを防止できる。
このような燃料の性状を検知する方法として、燃料の屈折率を測定するタイプのセンサが今までに開発されている。
また、光源と、周期の異なる複数の短周期グレーティングを有するコアおよび前記コアを覆うクラッドを具備する光ファイバと、前記光源から前記光ファイバに入射され前記短周期グレーティングを経た光の強度を検出する受光部とを備え、複数の短周期グレーティングのうちの第1短周期グレーティングと第2短周期グレーティングとが重畳して設けられるものである。
図1は、この発明を実施するための実施の形態1における光ファイバセンサを説明する模式図である。図1において、光ファイバ1の一方の端部に光源2が配置されており、他方の端部に受光部3が配置されている。光ファイバ1は、光源2から入射される光が主に伝搬するコア4と、光をコア4内に閉じ込めるためにコア4を覆うクラッド5と、コア4およびクラッド5を覆って保護するファイバジャケット6とを備えている。クラッド5が直接液体の被測定対象8と接するようにファイバジャケット6の一部が取り除かれており、このファイバジャケット6が取り除かれている部分に対応するコア4には短周期グレーティング10が形成されている。光ファイバセンサは、光ファイバ1と光源2と受光部3と受光部3に信号線90を介して接続されている屈折率計算ユニット50とで構成されている。光ファイバ1は、被測定対象8を貯蔵する容器9の底面の近くでU字型に屈曲させて配置され、光源2と受光部3とは容器9の外部に配置されている。
本実施の形態の光ファイバセンサにおいては、光ファイバ1の長さ10mmの範囲に、図2のように第1の周期p1が0.3μmである第1短周期グレーティング11と、第2の周期p2が0.294μmである第2短周期グレーティング12が、傾斜角度θがともに8.6°であるように形成されている。
なお、傾斜角度は−90°より大きく90°より小さな値で表すものとする。
光源2であるLEDから出射した近赤外領域の光が光ファイバ1の短周期グレーティング10に達すると、光ファイバ1の透過スペクトルには一定の波長範囲でクラッド伝搬モードと呼ばれる周期的な鋭い透過損失ピークが発生する。短周期グレーティング10が設けられた領域のクラッド5の外周に接する被測定対象8の屈折率がクラッド5の屈折率に近づくにつれ、このクラッド伝搬モードによる透過損失ピークが短波長側から消失し、最終的には波長依存性が緩やかで連続的な損失スペクトル形状に変化する。クラッド伝搬モードによる透過損失ピークの発生の程度により、光ファイバ1に接続された受光部3に達する光の強度が変動するため、前もって受光強度と屈折率の対応を調べておくことにより、受光部3に達する光の強度が信号線90を介して屈折率計算ユニット50に出力されて、屈折率計算ユニット50から被測定対象の屈折率が出力できる。
また、被測定対象8の屈折率が測定できると、あらかじめ屈折率と被測定対象8の性状の関係を調べておくことにより、ガソリンのアルコールの混合比などの被測定対象8の性状を測定できる。
また、図12、図13、図14は、図9のa(27℃)における透過率が1.36から1.40までの屈折率に対して線形と仮定した場合の図9、図10、図11の関係の線形特性からのずれの相対値を示したものである。この場合も、a、b、cはそれぞれ27℃、48.5℃、70℃のずれの値を示す。
これに対し、図13の短周期グレーティング10の周期が3種類の場合には、屈折率が1.36から1.40の範囲の線形特性からのずれがほぼ半減しており、図14の短周期グレーティング10の周期が5種類の場合には、線形特性からのずれがさらに減少している。このような周期の多重化による線形特性からのずれの低減は、周期の多重度が増加するにしたがってクラッド伝搬モードが発生する波長範囲幅が増加するので、光源2の発光波長範囲の温度によるシフトが発生した場合にもクラッド伝搬モード発生範囲以外の光強度の割合を低下させることができるためである。なお、線形特性からのずれについては、実際にはさらに光源スペクトル形状の影響が加わる。
多重度が3重から5重の透過率の変化量増加はわずかであるが、これは、3重の多重によりクラッド伝搬モード発生範囲が光源2の発光波長範囲にほぼ対応できており、さらに両端に加えた2重分のクラッド伝搬モードの寄与が大きくないことによる。
また、環境温度により光源2の発光波長範囲がずれ、クラッド伝搬モードが発生する波長範囲の光強度が減少することがあるが、クラッド伝搬モードの透過損失が発生する波長範囲を増加させることにより、光源の発光波長範囲温度依存性の影響を低減できる。
実施の形態1では、周期の異なる短周期グレーティング10を設ける効果について説明した。本実施の形態では、周期および傾斜角度がともに異なる複数の短周期グレーティング10を有する光ファイバセンサについて説明する。
図21に示すように、図20の構成の光ファイバセンサにおいては、クラッド伝搬モードの損失ピークの波長範囲がおよそ865〜890nmの間と25nm程度の広い範囲に連続的に現れる。また、短周期グレーティング10の傾斜角度が2種類あり、その傾斜角度の大きさを、図19に示される屈折率計測範囲の傾斜角度依存性に基づき、各計測範囲の和ができるだけ広くなるように、かつ、各計測範囲の一部が重なるように適切に設定したため、屈折率が0.06程度と大きい範囲で途切れることなく検知できる。以上のように,傾斜角度の異なるグレーティングを複数形成することにより、測定屈折率範囲を拡大できる。
図22において、2種類の短周期グレーティング10を設け、第1短周期グレーティング11と第2短周期グレーティング12の周期と傾斜角度をともに異なるようにする。本実施の形態における光ファイバセンサのコア4には、各短周期グレーティングが離間して設けられている。光ファイバ1をコア径が62.5μm、第1の周期p1が0.3μm、第2の周期p2が0.296μm、第1の傾斜角度θ1が8.6°、第2の傾斜角度θ2が10.0°とした場合の光ファイバ1の透過スペクトルは、図23に示すようになる。
さらに、実施の形態1と同様に、環境温度により光源2の発光波長範囲がずれることにより、クラッド伝搬モードの透過損失ピークが発生する波長範囲の光強度が減少することがあるが、クラッド伝搬モードの透過損失ピークが発生する波長範囲を増加させることにより、光源2の発光波長範囲温度依存性の影響を低減できる。
図24において、第1の周期p1で第1の傾斜角度θ1、第1の周期p1で第2の傾斜角度θ2、第2の周期p2で第1の傾斜角度θ1、第2の周期p2で第2の傾斜角度θ2の4種類の短周期グレーティングが個別に形成されている。本実施の形態における光ファイバセンサのコア4には、各短周期グレーティングが離間して設けられている。第1の周期p1と第2の周期p2は異なり、第1の傾斜角度θ1と第2の傾斜角度θ2も異なる値である。
しかしながら、クラッド伝搬モードの透過損失ピークが発生する波長範囲を必要以上に拡大すると検知感度の低下を招く場合がある。例えば、測定したい屈折率範囲が0.06であり、この範囲に対応する波長範囲以外にも光源2の発光波長範囲内にクラッド伝搬モードの透過損失ピークが発生する波長範囲を拡大するとする。このような波長範囲の拡大は、測定したい範囲で屈折率が変動してもその強度が変化しない光量の割合を増加させる効果しかなく、屈折率に依存した透過光量の全光量に対する変化割合を減少させるので、結果的に検知感度を低下させる。
したがって、短周期グレーティングの傾斜角度として測定したい屈折率範囲に対応した種類を設けた上で、さらに複数の周期の短周期グレーティングを設ける等の方法により,光源2の発光波長範囲に対応してクラッド伝搬モードの透過損失ピークが発生する波長範囲を拡大することが望ましい。
図29は、クラッド径125μm、コア径62.5μmのマルチモード光ファイバのコア4に周期が0.284μm、0.292μm、0.3μmの3種類、傾斜角度1が8.6°、10.0°の2種類で計6種類の短周期グレーティングを備えた光ファイバ1の透過スペクトルと光源2であるLEDの発光スペクトルの関係を示したものである。図29に示すように、複数の周期と傾斜角度に対応したクラッド伝搬モード透過損失ピークの発生波長範囲が光源のスペクトル波長範囲の全域を占めるようにすることで、センサを最も高感度にでき、センサ応答の温度依存性も最小にできる。
この場合も、図31の場合と同様に、短周期グレーティングを設ける領域が重畳している場合には、短周期グレーティング10の屈折率変動領域の重なりが少ないため露光の飽和が生じにくく、短周期グレーティング10の形成がより容易になる。
本実施の形態における光ファイバセンサの短周期グレーティング10は、コア4の屈折率に対して屈折率が異なっている領域が平面的に形成されているものではなく曲面的に設けられているものである。このような短周期グレーティング10を傾斜角度が連続的に変化している短周期グレーティング10と呼ぶことにする。
ここで、クラッド5の屈折率が大気の屈折率に近い場合は、図34のように媒体31中に置いてビーム30を照射する必要はない。また、媒体中でビーム30を照射する場合には、媒体としてビーム30の吸収がない、あるいは、少ない媒体を選択する。例えば、水は、Nd−YAGレーザ4倍高調波の波長266nmに対して透明であるので、この波長のビーム30に適している。
図37に示される短周期グレーティング10は、異なる傾斜角度の短周期グレーティングが重畳されているものと見ることができる。
本実施の形態における光ファイバセンサの短周期グレーティング10は、傾斜角度が光ファイバ1の中心軸100方向に漸次変動しているものである。このような短周期グレーティング10を、漸次傾斜角度が変化する短周期グレーティング10と呼ぶことにする。
図39において、コア4には第1の周期p1の短周期グレーティング10が設けられ、その傾斜角度は光ファイバ1の中心軸100方向にθ1からθ2まで漸次変動している。
図39に示すような光ファイバ1は、図40に示すように、変動する傾斜角度の差だけ撓ませた光ファイバ1に周期的な線状のビーム30を照射することによって形成することができる。
実施の形態1〜3による光ファイバセンサにおいて、液体の屈折率を測定する例を示したが、本実施の形態1〜3による光ファイバセンサに加えて、被測定対象の温度を測定する機構を設け、測定した屈折率と温度とからより正確に被測定対象の性状を測定できる。本実施の形態においては、実施の形態1の光ファイバセンサに温度測定機構などを加えて液体の性状を測定する光ファイバセンサについて説明する。
例えば、エタノール混合ガソリンを被測定対象8とした場合、混合比により屈折率は連続的に変動するが、本実施の形態の光ファイバセンサによれば、あらかじめ被測定対象8の温度依存性データ、すなわち、温度較正データを取得しておき、その温度較正データを基に測定温度の影響を補償することにより、正確にエタノールとガソリンとの混合比を測定できる。
Claims (8)
- 光源と、
周期の異なる複数の短周期グレーティングを有するコアおよび前記コアを覆うクラッドを具備する光ファイバと、
前記光源から前記光ファイバに入射され前記短周期グレーティングを経た光の強度を検出する受光部とを備え、
複数の短周期グレーティングの少なくともいずれかは傾斜角度を有していることを特徴とする光ファイバセンサ。 - 複数の短周期グレーティングのうちの第1短周期グレーティングおよび第2短周期グレー
ティングは異なる傾斜角度を有することを特徴とする請求項1に記載の光ファイバセンサ。 - 光源と、
周期の異なる複数の短周期グレーティングを有するコアおよび前記コアを覆うクラッドを具備する光ファイバと、
前記光源から前記光ファイバに入射され前記短周期グレーティングを経た光の強度を検出する受光部とを備え、
複数の短周期グレーティングのうちの第1短周期グレーティングと第2短周期グレーティングとが重畳して設けられることを特徴とする光ファイバセンサ。 - 第1短周期グレーティングおよび第2短周期グレーティングの傾斜角度の正負符号が逆で
あることを特徴とする請求項2に記載の光ファイバセンサ。 - 光ファイバの中心軸と、
光ファイバの中心軸を通る第1短周期グレーティングの屈折率が変動する軸と、
前記光ファイバの中心軸を通る第2短周期グレーティングの屈折率が変動する軸とが同一平面上にないことを特徴とする請求項2に記載の光ファイバセンサ。 - 複数の短周期グレーティングのクラッド伝搬モードによる透過損失波長範囲は、連続して
おり、光源の発光波長範囲全体を含むことを特徴とする請求項1ないし5のいずれかに記載の光ファイバセンサ。 - 光源と、
連続した傾斜角度の短周期グレーティングを有するコアおよび前記コアを覆うクラッドを具備する光ファイバと、
前記光源から前記光ファイバに入射され前記短周期グレーティングを経た光の強度を検出する受光部とを備えたことを特徴とする光ファイバセンサ。 - 光源と、
その中心軸方向に漸次傾斜角度が変化する短周期グレーティングを有するコアおよび前記コアを覆うクラッドを具備する光ファイバと、
前記光源から前記光ファイバに入射され前記短周期グレーティングを経た光の強度を検出する受光部とを備えたことを特徴とする光ファイバセンサ。
