【発明の属する技術分野】
本発明は記録材に画像の転写を行ない、この転写された画像を定着装置により記録材に定着を行なう画像形成装置に関する。

【従来の技術】
図10乃至図12を用いて従来の技術の説明をする。図10は従来の画像形成装置の概略構成図であり、図11は従来の定着装置の説明図であり、図12はトナー形状の説明図である。

図10に示すように、レーザービームプリンター等の画像形成装置は、給送部150から給送された記録材Pに対して、画像形成部140で形成された未定着トナー像を感光体ドラム141上で担持し、転写部146において前記未定着トナー像を記録材Pに転写を行なって、記録材P上にトナー像が形成される。この後、記録材Pは定着装置100において熱や圧力により定着され、排出部170に排出されることで画像形成動作を終了する。

次に定着装置100について、図を用いて定着装置100内の構成を詳細に説明する。

図11に示すように、記録材Pを搬送する定着ローラ101は、例えばアルミニウムや鉄等の定着ローラ芯金101a上にPFA、PTFE等のフッ素系樹脂からなる離型層101bを設け、内部には加熱手段としてのヒータ103が設けられる。また、定着ローラ101に対して加圧ローラ102が加圧され、ニップ部Nを形成している。加圧ローラ102は、例えばアルミニウムや鉄等の加圧ローラ芯金102a上に、耐熱性を持ったシリコンスポンジゴム等からなる弾性層102bを、更にPFA、PTFE等のフッ素樹脂からなる離型性のよい樹脂からなる離型層102cが形成されている。

定着ローラ101の離型層101bは、未定着トナー像が定着ローラ101に転移して後続の画像を汚す、いわゆる「オフセット現象」を防止するものである。加えて、定着ローラ芯金101aに定着バイアスとして、直流電源108によりマイナスの直流電圧を印加し、定着ローラ101表面にマイナスの電位を生じさせることで、積極的にオフセット現象の発生を防止している。

また、加圧ローラ102の離型層102cは、記録材P上から定着ローラ101を介して加圧ローラ102に転移したオフセットトナーや記録材P裏面に付着したトナーが、加圧ローラ102表面に付着するのを防止している。

また、加圧ダイオード素子109は、加圧ローラ芯金102aと本体のGND間に、加圧ローラ芯金102a側がカソード、本体GND側がアノードとなるように接続することで、加圧ローラ102表面電位がマイナスとならないようにし、加圧ローラ102の表面と定着ローラ101の表面間に電位差を作り、その電界によって記録材P上から定着ローラ101へのオフセット現象を防止している。

定着前の記録材P上で未定着トナー像を形成する未定着トナー107は、定着ニップ部Nにおいて加熱、加圧されることで、記録材P上に定着される。入口ガイド104は、未定着トナー像が形成された記録材Pをニップ部Nにガイドし、定着装置100において記録材P上に永久画像として定着している。

また、定着ローラ101の表面温度を検知する温度センサのサーミスタ105があり、定着ローラ101表面に所定の当接圧で当接しており、定着ローラ101の表面が一定となるようにヒータ103への通電をON、OFF(通電をOFFさせている電気回路は不図示)している。サーミスタ105よりも定着ローラ101の回転方向上流には、定着ローラ101に記録材Pへの巻き付きを防ぐ定着分離爪106があり、定着分離爪106の表面にはトナー等が付着するのを防止するために、離型性に優れるPFAやPTFE等のコーティングがなされている。

このような構成の定着装置100を備えた画像形成装置では、コンピュータ等からプリント信号が入力され、画像形成の準備を始める。プリント信号が入力されたのを受けて、サーミスタ105により検知温度を検知し、画像定着に必要な温度に達している場合は画像形成を開始し、画像定着に必要な温度に達している場合はヒータ103への通電を行ない、画像定着に必要な温度に達するまで定着ローラ101を加熱して、画像形成を開始する。

最近は、省エネルギーといった観点から、画像形成装置がある一定時間以上使われない時は、ヒータ103への通電をOFFとして、省エネルギーを図るような設定が可能な画像形成装置が増えている。

そのため、画像形成装置が頻繁に使われていれば、ヒータ103への通電が最小限でなされるスタンバイ状態にあるため、プリント信号を受けると、直ちに画像形成動作に入ることができる。しかし省エネルギーモードで使用していると、ヒータ103への通電はOFFになるため、定着ローラ101表面の温度は低下してしまい、画像形成に入る前に定着ローラ101を加熱する必要がある。

画像形成装置の動作時において、記録材に填料として炭酸カルシウム(以下「炭カル」)を10数%以上含有している記録材を多数頁の画像形成動作をすると、搬送される記録材に含有されている炭カルと、定着ローラ101表層であるフッ素樹脂層が摩擦帯電することで、炭カルはプラスに帯電し、フッ素系樹脂はマイナスに帯電する。

さらに、定着ローラ芯金101aにはオフセット防止の目的で、マイナスの定着バイアスを印加しているため、定着ローラ101の表面はマイナスの電位となっている。プラスに帯電した炭カルは、オフセット防止の定着バイアスによってマイナスの表面電位となっている定着ローラ101から働く静電的な力によって定着ローラ101表面に静電的に付着することとなる。また、定着ローラ101表面に離型性に優れたフッ素樹脂を用いても、炭カルが付着することで離型性の低下を招き、更に炭カルが付着しやすくなる。

定着ローラ101表面に炭カルが付着すると、(1)定着バイアスが炭カルの帯電電荷であるプラス電荷によって相殺されることによる静電気的なオフセットの発生、(2)離型性の低下によるオフセットの発生、の2種類のオフセット現象が発生してしまう。オフセットしたトナーは、記録材と記録材との搬送間隔において、定着ローラ101表面から加圧ローラ102表面に転移し、加圧ローラ102表面に蓄積してしまう。

このような過程によって、加圧ローラ102に付着や堆積をしたトナーが、記録材の裏面汚れとなったり、再び定着ローラ101に戻り記録材の表面汚れとなって、顕在化したりするため、この対策として、加圧ローラ102にクリーニングローラ110を当接させ、加圧ローラ102表面に付着したトナーや炭カルを回収することで、加圧ローラ102にトナーや炭カルが堆積することを防止し、加圧ローラ102表面が常にきれいな状態にあるように保っている。

加圧ローラ102に付着したトナーや炭カルが、クリーニングローラ110に回収されるのは、加圧ローラ102表層の離型層より、クリーニングローラ110の離型性が劣るためである。そのため、クリーニングローラ110の材質として、アルミニウムや鉄等の金属材料が用いられる。

ここで、定着ローラ101と加圧ローラ102との当接方法としては、加圧ローラ102とクリーニングローラ110との芯金同士の中心距離を一定に保つことで当接位置を決める軸間距離固定方式や、バネを用いて加圧ローラ102に当接させるバネ加圧方式が考えられる。

【発明が解決しようとする課題】
しかしながら、クリーニングローラ110はトナーや炭カルを回収するために設けているため、トナーや炭カルの回収につれて、クリーニングローラ110の外径は大きくなっていく。

クリーニングローラ110の外径が大きくなるにつれて、軸間距離固定方式では加圧ローラ102への食い込み量が大きくなる。画像形成時は加圧ローラ102からの伝熱によって、クリーニングローラ110表層のトナーが軟化しているため、加圧ローラ102とクリーニングローラ110との間でなすニップ部N’において、トナーは自在に変化するため、円形状態を保持し、スムーズな回転がなされる。

しかし、画像形成が終了してスタンバイモードに入り、定着ローラ101からの発熱量が小さくなり、加圧ローラ102の温度も低下することで、加圧ローラ102からの伝熱によって暖められているクリーニングローラ110の温度も低下してしまう。このとき、図12(a)に示すように、付着しているトナー量が少なければ円形状態のままであるので問題にはならないが、図12(b)に示すように、付着しているトナー量が多くなると、加圧ローラ102とでなされるニップ部N’により、ニップ部N’の形状に倣ってトナーが非円形状に固まってしまう。

非円形状にトナーが固まってしまう現象は、記録材の通過枚数が増えるにつれ、この傾向が強くなっていく。そのため、加圧ローラ102とクリーニングローラ110との間でなすニップ部N’の幅は、通過枚数が増えるに従って、大きくなっていく。このように、ニップ部N’の幅が大きくなり、トナーが非円形状になると、図12(b)に示すように、非円形状のエッジ部l1と、円形状の箇所l2との距離が異なり、l1>l2という関係になると、クリーニングローラ110と加圧ローラ102との回転軸が振れることになる。この振れる度合いは、クリーニングローラ110へのトナーの付着量が多くなるにつれて大きくなる。

このように、クリーニングローラ110に付着するトナーが非円形状で固まってしまうと、クリーニングローラ110と加圧ローラ102との回転軸が振れることになり、ガタガタといった異音が発生し、定着装置を駆動する定着駆動モータMにかかる負荷も大きくなる。この異音はクリーニングローラ110が暖められ、トナーが溶融し、非円形状態から円形状態になることで回転がスムーズになり、異音の発生はなくなる。

しかし、画像形成が終了し、定着装置100がスタンバイ状態に移行し、クリーニングローラ110の温度が低下することで溶融していたトナーがニップ部N’に倣って硬化してしまうと、次の画像形成時に異音が発生することになる。尚、この問題は、軸間距離固定方式の方がバネ加圧方式に比べて早期に発生してしまうが、バネ加圧方式においても発生することに変わりはない。

そこで本発明の目的は、画像形成装置の定着装置において、クリーニングローラにトナーが付着することに起因する異音の発生を未然に防ぐとともに、定着駆動モータにかかる負荷を軽減することである。

【課題を解決するための手段】
上記目的を達成するための、本発明の代表的な構成は、記録材を搬送するニップ部を形成する一対の回転体と、前記一対の回転体のいずれか一方を加熱するヒータと、前記一対の回転体のうち前記ヒータで加熱しない回転体に当接しクリーニングするクリーニングローラと、を備え、前記ニップ部で記録材を搬送しながら加熱して記録材上のトナー像を記録材に定着する定着手段と、前記一対の回転体が回転するように駆動する駆動源と、前記定着手段及び前記駆動源を制御する制御手段と、を有する画像形成装置において、前記制御手段は、定着した記録材の枚数が前記定着手段の動作保証枚数に対して所定の割合に達した場合、画像形成終了後に、前記ヒータの通電を停止し前記駆動源で前記一対の回転体が所定時間回転する冷却期間を経てスタンバイモードに移行し、定着した記録材の枚数が前記定着手段の動作保証枚数に対して前記所定の割合に達していない場合、画像形成終了後に、前記冷却期間を経ずにスタンバイモードに移行することを特徴とする。

【発明の実施の形態】
(第1比較例)
本発明の第1比較例を図面を用いて説明する。図1は第1比較例の制御のフローチャートであり、図2は画像形成装置の概略説明図であり、図3は定着装置の説明図であり、図4は記録材の通過枚数と付着トナーとの膜厚の関係を示す図であり、図5は記録材の通過枚数とニップ部との幅の関係を示す図であり、図6はスタンバイモードに移行する際のクリーニングローラの経時変化を比較した場合の説明図であり、図7はスタンバイモードに移行する際のクリーニングローラの経時変化の説明図である。

(画像形成装置)
画像形成装置として、レーザービームプリンタを例にして説明をする。図2に示すように、画像形成装置は、給送部として、給送カセット50と給送ローラ51(ピックアップローラを含む)と搬送板金52とを有し、搬送部として、搬送ローラ対48を有し、画像形成部として、露光手段としてのレーザースキャナ40と像担持体としての感光体ドラム41と一次帯電器42と現像ローラ43とを有し、転写部として、転写ローラ46を有し、定着部として、定着装置60を有し、排出部として、搬送ローラ対61と排出トレイ70と排出ローラ対71とを有する。

また、定着装置60は一対の回転体としての定着ローラ1及び加圧ローラ2を有し、定着装置60を駆動する定着駆動モータM、定着駆動モータMの駆動制御をするCPUを有する制御手段30、制御手段30にて判断された警告等の情報をユーザに示す表示部20等を有する。

給送カセット50内に積載収納されたシート状の記録材Pは、図中反時計回りに回転する給送ローラ51により給送され、搬送板金52に導かれて搬送ローラ対48のニップ部へ送られる。次いで、記録材は搬送ローラ対48によって感光体ドラム41と転写ローラ46との間に送られる。

感光体ドラム41は図中時計回りに回転しており、一次帯電器42により均一に帯電されている。そして、感光体ドラム41の外周面には、レーザースキャナ40からのレーザー光Lにより静電潜像が感光体ドラム41上に順次形成され、続いてその静電潜像が現像ローラ43により現像され、トナー像が形成される。感光体ドラム41と転写ローラ46との間に送られた記録材には、感光体ドラム41上のトナー像が転写ローラ46により順次転写される。

このようにしてトナー像が転写された記録材は定着装置60へ送られ、ここで加熱、加圧されてトナー像が記録材に定着する。この後、記録材は搬送ローラ対61により排出ローラ対71へ送られ、次いで排出ローラ対71により装置本体上の排出トレイ70上に排出される。

そして、このレーザービームプリンタでは、感光体ドラム41と感光体ドラム41に作用するプロセス手段(レーザースキャナ40、一次帯電器42等)を有するプロセスカートリッジ45や、定着装置60のユニットや、給送ローラ51及び転写ローラ46の関係は消耗部品であり、その製品のライフの中に何回かの交換が必要である。

(定着装置)
次に定着装置60について詳細に説明する。図3に示すように、定着ローラ1は、直径40mm、肉厚1mmのアルミニウムを芯金1aとし、離型層1bとして厚さ50μmのPFAチューブを被覆している。定着バイアスとして、定着ローラ芯金1aには−700VDCをDC電源8によって印加することで定着ローラ表面電位を約−650Vに保持し、定着ローラ1と加圧ローラ2間にオフセット防止の電位差を付与するようにしている。また、画像定着中は、サーミスタ5の検知温度が180±5℃の範囲に入るように、ヒータ3への通電をON、OFF制御している。スタンバイ動作中は、サーミスタ検知温度が160〜170℃の範囲に入るように、検知温度が160℃になったらヒータ3への通電をONとし、170℃になったらOFFとする動作を繰り返している。

加圧ローラ2は、直径14mmの鉄製の加圧ローラ芯金2aの上に、厚さ8mmのシリコンスポンジゴムからなる弾性層2b、更に弾性層2bの上に離型層2cとして厚さ50μmのPFAチューブを被覆し、加圧ローラ2としての硬度は約56度(アスカーC硬度計にて1kg荷重)とし、約200Nの押圧力によって定着ローラ1に押し当てることで、約5mm幅のニップ部Nを得ている。加圧ローラ芯金2aと本体GND間には、耐圧2kVのダイオード素子9を加圧ローラ芯金2a側をカソード、本体GND側をアノードとして接続し、加圧ローラ2表面をプラス電位に保持するような構成としている。

記録材P上に形成された未定着トナー像7は、定着入口ガイド4に沿って、定着ローラ1と加圧ローラ2がなすニップ部Nに導かれる。定着分離爪6は、母材として耐熱性に優れたポリイミド樹脂を用い、表層には離型性に優れるPFA樹脂をコーティングしている。

加圧ローラ2の表面に付着するトナーや炭酸カルシウム(以下、炭カル)等をクリーニングするφ12のアルミニウム製のクリーニング回転体としてのクリーニングローラ10を加圧ローラ2に当接させている。クリーニングローラ10の加圧ローラ2への当接方法は、加圧ローラ2の芯金1a中心とクリーニングローラ10の芯金中心の距離を一定に保持する軸間距離固定方式で、約30N(ニュートン)の押圧力によって、加圧ローラ2に押し当てられており、加圧ローラ2に従動することで回転する構成となっている。

このような構成の定着装置を有した画像形成装置を用いて、炭カルを19%含有する記録材として、キヤノン販売(株)のLASER80(サイズ:A4、秤量:80g/m2)に、印字率(記録材に占める画像形成がされたトナーの割合)4%の画像を連続通過させた場合のクリーニングローラ10上に付着するトナーの付着膜厚と、ニップN’の幅の変化を図4及び図5に示す。

図4に示すように、記録材の定着装置60への通過枚数が増えるほど、付着膜厚が大きくなり、また図5に示すように、記録材の定着装置60への通過枚数が増えるほど、ニップ部N’の幅が大きくなっていくのがわかる。

本比較例で使用した定着装置60では、クリーニングローラ10上の付着トナー厚が約1.5mmで、加圧ローラ2とクリーニングローラ10とのなすニップ部N’の幅が約5mmになると、異音が発生し始める。

そこで、本比較例の特徴である。画像形成装置において画像形成動作が終了する際に、加熱源であるヒータへの通電はオフとするが、引き続き所定時間の回転動作を行なうことでクリーニングローラの温度は低下し、溶融状態にある加圧ローラ2への付着トナーは、円形状を保持したまま硬化し始め、付着トナー上にニップ部N’の形状が形成されなくなることで、異音の発生や故障を未然に防止することが可能となる。これを図6及び図7を用いて詳細に説明する。

図6に示すように、上記構成により従来の制御を行なうと、クリーニングローラ10の温度は記録材の通過に従って緩やかに昇温していき、ある温度で平衡に達する。本比較例の検討で使用した画像形成装置では、約95℃になる。また、使用した付着トナーは約85℃で軟化し始める付着トナーである。平衡に達した状態でのクリーニングローラ10の温度は約95℃であるため、付着トナーは溶融状態にある。

一連の画像形成動作が終了し、スタンバイ状態に移行するために、ヒータ3への通電がオフとなり加圧ローラ2の回転が停止する。すると付着トナーは、加圧ローラ2とクリーニングローラ10とがなすニップ部N’の形状を保持したまま硬化し始め、ニップ部N’形状の付着トナーが形成されることになる。

しかし、画像形成動作の終了と共にヒータ3への通電をオフとしたまま、定着装置60を引き続き回転させることで、付着トナー上にニップ形状が形成されることなく、短時間でクリーニングローラ10表面の温度を付着トナーの硬化温度以下に低下させることが可能となる。溶融した付着トナーは約85℃を下回ると硬化が始まり、約75℃に達するとニップ部N’の形状が形成されずに硬化した状態になる。

図7に示すように、ヒータ3への通電をオフとし、回転動作をさせることで、クリーニングローラ10表面の温度は約45秒で、約75℃に達していることがわかる。一方、図6に示すような従来のスタンバイモードに移行する際の制御方法のように、回転を停止しヒータ3をスタンバイでの加熱にした場合は、クリーニングローラ10表面の温度が約75℃に達するのに約90秒ほどかかるため、その間に付着トナーに対してニップ部N’の形状が形成されてしまうことになる。

また、ここで次の画像形成命令が入ってきた場合は、クリーニングローラ10上に付着した付着トナーが溶融状態であるままで、次の画像形成動作に入れば、付着トナーにニップ部N’の形状は形成されないので、異音の発生等はない。そして、この画像形成動作が終了次第、本比較例の特徴である、ヒータ3をオフとして加圧ローラ2の回転動作を行なうことで、異音の発生要因となるニップ部N’の形状が付着トナーへの形成を防止することができる。

これを踏まえて、図1を用いて制御手段30による画像形成動作の流れを説明する。まず、プリント信号を基に画像形成動作を行ない、画像形成動作が終了した後、定着装置60のローラを回転させ続ける。定着装置60のヒータ3をオフとした後も定着装置60のローラの回転を継続し、ローラの回転時間が45秒以上になったら、制御手段30はローラの回転を終了させ、スタンバイ状態に移行する。

以上のように、画像形成動作終了後の、クリーニングローラ10上の付着トナーにニップ部N’の形状が形成されないようにするために、ヒータ3への通電をオフとし、少なくとも画像形成装置を回転させることで、クリーニングローラ10上の付着トナーの形状が円形状を保持したまま、溶融状態にある付着トナーを硬化させることで、ニップ部N’の形状が形成しないことになり、異音の発生や故障等を未然に防ぐことができる。

(第2比較例)
本発明の第2比較例を図面を用いて説明する。図8は第2比較例の制御のフローチャートである。本比較例で、前述した比較例と同様の構成は、同符号を付し、説明を省略する。本比較例においては、画像形成装置動作後のヒータオフでの回転動作の実施を、画像形成動作の枚数によって切替えたことを特徴とする。

第2比較例においても、炭酸カルシウム(炭カル)を19%含有する記録材として、キヤノン販売(株)製のLASER80(サイズ:A4、秤量:80g/m2)に、印字率(記録材に閉める画像形成がされたトナーの割合)が5%の画像をニップ部N’に連続通過させて効果を確認した。通過枚数とクリーニングローラ10上に付着するトナーの膜厚、通過枚数とニップ部N’の幅の関係は先に述べた第1比較例の図4及び図5と同じである。

第1比較例でも述べたが、クリーニングローラ10上の付着トナーが軟化を始めるのは約85℃であるが、溶融状態になるのは約95℃以上の温度が一定時間続いたときであり、85℃を超えるのが短時間であれば溶融状態にはならない。先に第1比較例で示した図6からもわかるように、付着トナーが硬化状態にあるクリーニングローラ10の温度は、プリント開始直後では室温から約80℃以下であり、軟化温度である約85℃には定着装置60に対する数枚程度の記録材の通過により到達するが、溶融状態になる95℃を一定時間保持するには約100枚以上の通過が必要になる。

この温度は、画像形成直後の定着装置60の状態により変わるが、プリントが終了した直後でクリーニングローラ10の温度が約85℃を超えている状態では、付着トナーは硬化し始めないため、付着トナーに対してニップ部N’の形状も形成されない。逆に、前のプリントから時間が経過している場合は、クリーニングローラ10の温度が約80℃を下回っているため付着トナーは硬化状態にあり、軟化温度を超え、溶融状態に達するには約100枚程度約のプリントを行なう必要がある。

そこで、本比較例では、連続した画像形成動作が所定の枚数(本比較例では100枚)以上になった場合、ヒータ3をオフにして、少なくとも定着装置60の回転動作を行なうことで、加圧ローラ2となすニップ部N’で、付着トナー上にニップ部N’の形状が形成されることを防止することが可能となる。

これを踏まえて、図8を用いて制御手段30による画像形成動作の流れを説明する。まず、プリント信号を基に画像形成動作を行ない、画像形成動作が終了する。その後、記録材の連続通過枚数が100枚以上か否かを判断し、100枚以上でなければそのままスタンバイ状態に移行する。

以上のように、本比較例の特徴は、所定枚数100枚以上の連続プリント時のみ、ヒータ3をオフとし、少なくとも定着装置60の回転動作を行なうこととしたものだが、これは、単一の回転駆動源で定着装置60に限らず、画像形成装置全体の回転動作を行う場合に定着装置60以外に影響を与えることなく本発明の目的を達成できる点が有効である。

(第1実施形態)

以上のように、本発明においては、記録材上にトナー像を永久定着するための一対の回転体と、付着するトナーをクリーニングするために前記回転体の少なくとも一方の表面に設けたクリーニング回転体と、前記回転体及び前記クリーニング回転体を有する定着装置を駆動する定着駆動モータと、前記定着装置を暖めるヒータと、前記定着駆動モータを制御する制御手段とを有する画像形成装置であって、前記制御手段は、画像形成動作の終了後、ヒータを停止し、前記回転体を所定時間回転動作を行なうことを特徴とする。ヒータを停止し、画像形成動作後の前記回転体を所定時間継続的な回転動作を行なうことで、短時間で前記クリーニング回転体の温度を付着トナーの硬化温度以下に低下させることができる。このため、前記クリーニング回転体にトナーが付着することに起因する異音の発生を未然に防ぐとともに、定着駆動モータにかかる負荷を軽減することができる。
